I’m so glad Viscant won, started watching streams this year and loved his commentary during WNF streams. People make out like PR Balrog picked low tier characters, when both players picked their respective characters that they felt gave the best chances to win.
IMO, the biggest factor that made tokido a villain was more of “Marvel is USA’s game” than “He uses Phoenix”

Viscant was awesome. Too many crybabies saying phoenix helped him when his Wesker/Hagger are the ones fucking teams up without being able to use their supers. Lol don’t know why so many players were snapping in his phoenix even after she got the 5 bars. It’s like they didn’t know Viscant’s strategy was to get dark phoenix in there as soon as possible. If anything those players were wasting their meter to help him out.

Viscant (and, in all honesty, PR Rog) played a VERY MVC2 style (pick two characters and a get-the-fuck-off-me assist) in a game where just picking 3 point characters and hitting buttons is not only a stupidly good option but also something that gets a lot of people paid. Combofiend does it. Noel Brown does it. Yeah, Phoenix is ridiculous and with meter counts as two characters by herself, but if she gets snapped in and killed? Viscant is down to ONE character and an assist while the opponent probably has 3 top-tier point characters.
And yet he won Evo against the best in the world.

I don’t argue that you have a legitimate point, and even respect your opinion. I’m just saying that any one choosing to use Phoenix at EVO knew that there were many people who would not respect that. I guess I could point to the many things written, or the booing at EVO when people chose her, or Noel’s ashamed face when he took a game from Justin, or the fact that Seth and UltraDavid were discussing the stigma attached to Phoenix players while Viscant was playing, etc. But why? We all know there are plenty of people who feel that way. All I was saying was that there was every reason to know that a Phoenix win would be controversial, and if he was not prepared and willing to accept that, he should have chosen another character.
You can argue all day about whether people should feel one way or another, I’m just saying that they do. And obviously, Viscant knew this, made the choice to put himself in the best possible position to win, and now has a trophy in his hands. I’m making the point that no one, especially Viscant, should be acting shocked and dismayed over the criticism. The writing was on the wall.
Also, I do not hate Viscant. I think he is extremely talented, and likeable enough. I would just have a little more respect had he won with a character other than Phoenix. That is just my personal feeling. You don’t have to like it.
Can’t blame someone for playing the game. Play to win. It’s why you see so many people use Wolverine/Akuma, Wesker, Phoenix.
