Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown console thread

Yeah that’s the kind of stuff I was talking about, seems good and it shows everything so that you get a general idea of what to do. Just updating this guide for FS would be a huge help for new players, it would create a better scene for the game with equal competition.

Yeah, when ever this guide drops make sure to talk about the removals on MTE, Throw Clash and 0-frame Throws. I’ve mentioned this too players that are “execution snobs” that think they know VF, and they try to bitch about the removal of MTE as a much to cater to scrubs, when in fact Throw Clash was VFs version of Ultra meter, and thankfully that was removed.

I like how the FS system is closer to the VF4 system.

I have yet to play FS, but I still miss MTE. There was something so rewarding about buffering 2-3 throw breaks and getting the break on your final input. It just felt good.

Here it is, and it’s still good

only the best guide ever.

now all you need to do is get off the umvc3 and get back on vf5

lol, yeah, I can’t argue.

I’m just really trying to get the game down for when I play tournaments

If anyone here has contacts with Sega-AM2 and/or Sega, tell them to start advertising and promoting this game if they want it to succeed.

Please.

I agree 100 percent. The gametrailers list for fighters in 2012 didn’t include vf5fs. Sure we could blame GT for ignorance but I haven’t heard anything about VF since the stream.

Actually there’s a whole ton of information on VFDC including several basic tutorials for just about everything, more match videos on youtube than anyone could reasonably watch for each version of VF5, and of course that Srider guide that he put considerable effort into. Btw that dude doesn’t even have time to play anymore last I heard. I’m really not sure why people pretend the VF community unwilling to help people. They’ve been writing lengthy FAQs since at least VF2, and they have only gotten more extensive over the years, with glosses for key terms if you really aren’t good at inferring from context (SRK wasn’t good about this either until SF4 came out).

Not to get too meta here, but a lot of posters have made SRK intolerable for newcomers and old timers alike – why do you think there are so many new generalized SF blogs and sites now? I can’t name a time that VFDC’s drama has been worse than SRK’s. We don’t have blatant fist fights, questionable tourney organizers, and gear thefts at our events and playing for money is done with a wink and a nudge more often than not because it can be a hot-button thing for some people (gamers especially aren’t made of money). You can argue its due to popularity or the history of SF tournies getting run that way but there’s no necessary connection between the two – this is 2012. Maybe the rest of the FGC should stop pretending that the game is impenetrable and asserting (in bad faith, it almost seems like) that the community actively rebuffs new players. This is me (alone, not as any sort of mouthpiece for VFDC or the NA community) getting upset because I don’t think 99% of the people in SRK VF threads will come and play for any length of time even if VF5FS on console had a VF4E tutorial mode, combo glossary, and move property guide.

Whoa now, I never critized VFDC or the VF community in general, I was merely talking out of my own ignorance when I said that the VF community should create some noobie guide, don’t really know why I didn’t expect guides already exists. But, good that they do exist, now is a time to get them out on the open, if you haven’t already, because as evidenced by myself, not all people use VFDC.

But yeah, SRK is shit.

I never really understood what made VF so different from fighter on a competitive level But whats this technical side i hear people fearing about? I only had limited experiences so I wouldn’t know but I dont feel or even hear anything…daunting about the system.

I feel the VF4EVO training mode was so good that it showed new players the depth of the game and how to take advantage of it. The training mode was so successful people thought other fighters didn’t have the same depth because other training modes don’t dive in that deep.
Since VF is such a balanced series there isn’t really one character or gimmick you can use to dominate other players. The stronger player usually wins, I guess that forces players to learn the game rather than just scratch the surface.

VF has tons of option selects that scared people back in the day. With the internet becoming as big as it is now it is easier to learn, and if you have doubts you can always hit up youtube or fighting game forums to get help. The truth is VF has great depth, a learning curve but the only thing I think is unique…the level of balance.

Edit: If I am not mistaken Final Showdown has made things simpler in the throw system. Akira also has become easier to play throughout the years.

VF4EVO did have a Godlike training mode. If more games shipped with modes like that we wouldn’t be getting all this simple mode and easy execution garbage.

I agree with both these points. There’s PLENTY of resources out there. I mean, how hard is it to look up stuff about Virtua Fighter when there’s a site LITERALLY CALLED VIRTUA FIGHTER DOT COM AND IT HAS PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VIRTUA FIGHTER!? At the same time, however, people are lazy to the point where they can’t even type anything on a search engine.

There really isn’t too much to it in all honesty. The most “technical” stuff I could think of would probably be open/closed stance and weight specific combos, but stuff like that is in every fighter in some way, shape or form as far as maximizing damage, but even then, it’s not that hard and everyone has BnB stuff that works on everyone. At the same time, combos aren’t the ONLY way to do damage.

Only other hard thing would be certain few moves that are tough to perform consistently without practice. Most everything in the game is doable. It’s more about how you apply it against the opponent. Again, like any other fighter.

Well in all honesty, VFDC is a little daunting. Here’s a real simple tutorial to get would be VF heads started. They can get into frames and ish later. This is what my dumbies guide will be about anyway. Hopefully SRK deems it worthy.

If you hit someone with a jab, here’s a general flow chart.

Standing jab, did it hit?
if yes, Jab/Elbow/throw/mixup
if no, block, evade, crouching jab

Crouching jab, did it hit?
If yes, elbow, big mid, throw
if no, block/fuzzy guard/evade/counter/reversal

Standing attacks lose to evasion and some low attacks, Evasion loses to throws and circular attacks, throws lose to fast attacks unless there’s
proper advantage, some crouching attacks lose to most mid attacks.

This is REALLY general, but honestly take these principals going in and you’re probably going to
do fairly well against the average player.

Doing old Akira’s jfs (VF3) were daunting. It’s gotten easier and easier with each new installment. Although… I still can’t do that damn knee.

Still… in VF4 you could get past a guy of equal skill if you were about average. It’s just the guys who’s skill level was better than yours, it was hella tough to even catch a round, defend, and get some grabs in. It’s then that you would have to not only know but actually apply your usage of ETEGs and fuzzy guards and multiple throw escapes.

VF is a pretty easy game to pick up and get a hold of. It’s just defeating or even holding your own against someone with more knowledge than you can make you look REALLY PITIFUL. And stuff you relied on would just get danced around or countered or not even get off.

This has been THE INVINCIBLE SWORDSMAN saying:

VF is easy to get into, but as you elevate in skill level, you can almost look behind you at your old self and say “Man who was that guy? He’s wasn’t shit.”

I can’t wait to Goh it up again. Man, I miss that guy.

Stuff like this is very helpful. I wouldn’t mind a walkthrough like this once FS is in our hands (if someone could be assed; would be very grateful).

SCV might have the closest thing to VF4’s training mode!

Really though, I can’t believe these games don’t teach their players how to play them. Mashing buttons is not enjoyable for long.

These already exist and one of them has been linked in this thread. That’s my entire point. Also I genuinely feel sorry for the guy that went to all that effort to explain TvC. No one plays that in tournies now at all. Do you see a trend?
