Yeah needless to say I am going to main Ragna. Also want to try Jin and Hakumen too, but I probably won’t stick with Hakumen. I’m not very good at being patient.
or I’ll just end up playing my one character like I always end up doing.
I don’t think I’ll ever stop playing GG, Sol is too awesome.
This is how it works in high-level competitive play.
Melee by some miracle became playable cometitively (though I know that’s up for debate) through all the glitches.
Brawl is pretty much Sakurai saying “Fuck you” to competitive smash players.
Smash is a complete mess though, everyone has a different opinion on how it should be played, lol. As for me, I don’t care anymore.
IMO, I shouldn’t have to learn to exploit glitches to be competitive. That’s fucking stupid. Nowadays, patching games is easy to do, so they should do it. PS2 games can’t really be patched (other than releasing a new version), so w/e.
Smash 64 was the GOOD smash. Brawl is fun as hell even if it’s not competitive (although I enjoy 2v2 in Brawl way more than 1v1 Melee).
Oh geez what have I done. I don’t wanna turn this thread into another Smash argument thread. All I wanna say is that bugs and glitches should be patched. That’s all.
Oh, and I’ll probably play Noel and Nu. I’m more interested in Nu atm, but she’s SO FRAGILE.
DD: I think you’re overreacting on this one. The Balrog, Abel, Gief glitch is shaky at best. I suppose you could use it to buffer in a little extra range to punish fireballs with Rog and Abel. Other than that, meh. Sometimes glitches are a good thing. 2-in-1’s were a glitch. I think kara throws are stupid, because all throws should have more range than they do in SF4. It isn’t like any of these bugs are Roll Cancel in cvs2 stupid.
Christian: I forgot, didn’t they make it so that May’s ride the dolphins automatically jump install?
Everett: Tekken 6 and SF have some stuff in common. You play “footsies”, try to bait a whiff, then punish that whiff. Oh hell, just watch this,
There weren’t autojump installed prior to AC, they might be now… that would explain why I have never seen frank the tank accidentally jump out of a s.S, that or because his execution is spot on.
I think the only “glitches” I use in SFIV are:
:db:+:mp:+:mk: to break throws
:d:,:df:+:lp:,:d:,:df:+:lp:,:d:,:df:+:lp:,:d:,:df:+:lp: to mash out dp
:l::r::l::p: to do rog’s rushes
None of those are game breaking, they just make things easier to do.
I’m fine with stuff like that, but not so much with things like the A+C glitch in last blade 2 or space race in basara. Poor poor basara, that game is sooo good! I wish people would just soft ban space race and start playing it competitively!
Donnie, yeah that’s actually what I was just thinking. I feel like the thing I understand most in fighting games are footsies. The main reason I never wanted to get into 3d before is just because it seems like sooo many moves to remember. In 2d everyone pretty much has the same normals and specials, but 3d just looks so random to me. Seems like I would enjoy it if I got past that though.
Maybe. It’s probably because I’m studying computer engineering. I spend so much time guaranteeing that a system is completely foolproof at every stage of development that it upsets me when a product doesn’t work exactly as it should. It seems like video games is the only place where it’s considered okay to have a bug in the product and not fix it. It just baffles me that gamers allow developers to be lazy like that; they should have to deal with bugs like everyone else.
And don’t give me any excuses about development costs. The company I respect most when it comes to development is Valve by a long shot. Team Fortress 2 retailed for $20 on day 1, and no monthly fees to play or anything. Since then, it’s received dozens and dozens of updates to fix bugs (usually very quickly) and even rebalance the game (and don’t forget adding new content to the game like weapons at NO COST). I can’t imagine how they are able to do this and no one else can. If I had to guess, they get a lot of money by letting companies distribute games through Steam. But, they could do that without updating TF2 every week. But they do anyway. The only thing I can think of is that Valve actually likes its customers. It comes down to the company’s integrity. PC developers are usually a bit better about it, probably because there’s less red tape to circumvent (I hear putting free content on xbl is a pain in the ass because M$ won’t profit off it, Sony probably isn’t much better). This is probably why The Orange Box on 360 and PS3 is so terrible. I believe I read an article from Valve about trying to get all the character updates and patches, but MS wanted them to charge for it, which isn’t something they wanted to do, and it became messy. XBL and PSN won’t let you update every other week, either, because of server costs. It’s a shame really. I don’t think Valve should have ventured into console development anyway, it wasn’t something they were ready for.
I don’t think Capcom can really share that excuse, though. They’re already releasing a free patch that’s adding Tourney modes. And yet, they aren’t fixing the heaps of problems like the terrible BP system, the lobby system, rebalancing (not too big an issue IMO, but little tweaks would be nice), etc. etc. It’s completely unacceptable that a big company like Capcom is unable to provide its customers with any support. Consoles are just specialized computers, after all (and not even weak ones anymore).
I have a master’s in computer science and glitches in fighting games don’t bother me. Now yes, some glitches do like gambit’s freezing glitch and the abba vs ino bug in AC. It isn’t so much about the devs being lazy and not finding these things so much as people figuring out what the system is capable of. And in some cases this actually changes the game. Some characters become very good when a new glitch is discovered while a glitch may hurt another character. It is one of the really fun aspects of a fighting game: it is always evolving. Some one uses strategy A, someone comes up with strategy B to stop strategy A, then glitch alpha is discovered which shuts down strategy B. Yeah it seems like SFIV is unbalanced now. But remember HnK for like a year tournaments were banning Yaggi (or whatever his name is) and now he is like 3 or 4 on the tier list. It is just part of the nature of the game. Also until recently patching a fighting game was a huge logistical problem. I mean do you put a patch on people’s memory cards for a ps2 game? How do they get this patch? You can’t really download it since your system can’t connect to the internet. Also look at HDR, it recently got patched but they made only bug fixes, no balance changes. Sure it seems like Honda/Akuma are top now but people will figure out a way around them. In summary glitches add depth, patching is hard.
Also I don’t want to get into an argument, I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in:tup:
Patching IS hard. However, patching SHOULDN’T be hard. A very efficient way to design products is to release it quickly and then fix the problems as they come up, and I’m fine with that. With video games, it used to be that once a game was released, that was it. If we wanted a game to come out in any reasonable amount of time, we would have to accept the fact that there’s gonna be bugs. But now that it’s possible to update software, vg developers no longer have that immunity. They should be as responsible for providing a quality product as anyone else, but they aren’t. I don’t like that. But, it’s not going to change because the developers aren’t being pressured to, and they aren’t being given tools to do so through XBL and PSN. I mean really, you pay $50 bucks a year to play games online through XBL, what are you actually paying for? XBL just acts as a lobby system to connect players to each other, it doesn’t actually act as a dedicated host. Can Microsoft really not afford letting the players download a patch that would only be a few megabytes anyway? I don’t think that’s the case. It’s fucking stupid. PC games have had updates for years. Fucking console games should, too.
As for evolution, that still leaves your strategy centered around a glitch. What would make more sense is that a patch is released that gives Guile a third move (HOLY SHIT). How will this legitimate, intentional change affect gameplay? That’s still up to the players to find out. Yet, I remain baffled because that would not be okay to most players. If Sagat got nerfed in a patch, there would be a hoard of players bitching and moaning about it for weeks. But if a glitch was discovered that allowed players to approach a turtle more easily (likely acting as a nerf to Sagat’s game) they would be so busy exploiting it that they wouldn’t have time to bitch about it. Fucking gamers don’t make any god damn sense.
I think I’m taking this too seriously, but I just really hate the entire console infrastructure with a passion.
Why would you do those! Those motions would probably fuck me up. I don’t understand how that’s easier. Instead of doing just down for the srk’s do db to df, and vice-a-versa. They just fucking fly out when you do that.
Now that I think about it, I don’t use any glitches. I need to fix that. Lets find some gief instant win glitches. Like, green hand makes you stick to the ground on block or hit. Even better, throwin’ bitches during hit stun.
Everett, after thinking about it you should learn 3d. that would be fun. i’ll bring my lee back out for some 1,2 juggle combos… sadly donnie is the only one that knows what i’m talking about. Scratch that, its awesome that donnie and i know about that.
DD: Glitches are stupid sometimes. However, in sf4 the glitches don’t really bother me any. It’s just another thing to bait/avoid. That’s where I feel true fighting game skill comes from. Understanding bullshit and using it to your advantage. Then again 4 is one big glitch anyway, amirite? haha.
Of course all of this simply to get
Anyone got games planned in the near future, thursday friday saturday? Also I’ll be on xbl playing sf4 sometime tonight, probably intoxicated, so if anyone would like to destroy me worse than usual, hit me up.
db + throw has a chance of ducking throws, so you throw instead of teching. Also, db is the command for low block, I think, so you could block a surprise jab when a throw is expected (locking you in block stun so your throw doesn’t come out).
I actually mash f, df, f, df, f, df to get srk on wakeup, but reversals are so easy this isn’t even necessary (unless you’re playing online).
charge b, f, b+p is used so that on the first frame of the dash straight/whatever, you’re already charging for the next move.
Not sure If I can do games this week. I have some group projects I have to work on. If we can work on them on early enough to do games Friday night, I’ll let you know.
Right, holding db… but why mash mp mk? That’s my question.
And with the charge move for rog? Really? He is easy to charge as it is. It just seems overly complicated when you can just hit punch then hold back. I never have problems with charging, just linking of off cr. lk.
