So I’ve been on a Tim Follins kick lately… I honestly did not know he did the music for the Spider-man and X-Men game for the SNES. Though I guess it’s not surprising…

You did these? That’s some good shit. I’m on your Guile mix right now…The Samus Brinstar one painted a picture of Samus in her ship getting ready perform a drive by on some Space Pirates.
Currently revisiting a bumpin’ EWJ2 tune. Lorenzen’s Soil. In the past I use to listen to the PSX/Saturn version quite a bit, but now can’t get enough of the [url=“http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OtrgZ2r2GA”]SNES & Genesis arrangements. Listen to that bass. Ya just gotta bump ya head to that.

Have you guys gotten ahold of Zuntata’s Cozmo 25 Anniversary Album?
GET IT! http://forums.ffshrine.org/f72/shared-shootem-up-musics-shmup-40557/182.html
It’s about halfway down the page. It’s 4 CDs long, although the last CD is an interview with Zuntata. The first CD is full of new “cosmos” themed tracks. The 2nd CD is full of legendary tracks from past games. CD 3 is full of unreleased tracks (some new DariusBurst stuff too), and CD 4 is the interviews.
Im currently at magfest using my wifes phone while waitng for Powerglove to start their bit on stage. Ill talk more about my experience when i get home but in short…this event is godlike.
Edit:
Typing this up is going to take some time…
Ok…this last weekend has been something else so I’ll try remember everything as I’m rockin out to my new purchases. This will be long though so I can only hope that I at least make it sound interesting for those who haven’t gone yet and are interested in going.
Magfest 11 adventure for those interested
[details=Spoiler]
Before I get into this lemme just start out by saying ‘WWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!’. This is currently the running gag of Magfest and should be (if it hasn’t been deemed so already) the official warcry for this event. When I first show up at the Gaylord Hotel, I’m completely blown away by how nice this place is. It’s pretty much one big ass building with other buildings in it (buildingception?) so often times you’re going to feel like you’re walking outside…when you aren’t. In anycase this place is huge…so one of the first things that I hear within what…5 minutes? Yeah I’m gonna say within 5 minutes of entering this building I hear this warcry echoing through the halls from several different Magfesters and it surprises the hell out of me. I really don’t know what to think of it but someone somewhere at some point usually within every 5-10 minutes will try to start this cry and everyone will go along with it and carry it throughout the hotel. I didn’t know what was going on until I had to have someone explain to me that it wasColossus’ special from the X-Men Arcade game. This is funny as hell since even though the hotel is mostly taken up by people for Magfest there’s still a good number of non-eventers walking around when these cries are reverberating througkout the hotel. At first I’m a bit reserved but it slowly infects you and you can’t help but join in…Nearly no panel, event, and/or concert will be saved from this cry. If it’s one of the things that I’ll miss most from this event, it’ll be this.
The other thing I notice upon walking into this place is Egoraptor in the entrance hallway talking with some people. Dude is definitely a bit taller than I thought he would be.
It takes us awhile to get our bags back once we get to our room because for some odd reason the Gaylord doesn’t want us to carry our bags inside…reeeally strange. My friend that invited me to the event was not too happy about that and that was understandable…I fucking missed a chance to see Mega Ran’s concert because we had to wait for our bags. I didn’t know I had missed this opportunity yet until later when I installed a guidebook app on my wife’s phone while we were eating later. In any case, we go exploring and visiting the downstairs area to check it out and it’s this big ass fucking warehouse room sectioned off into 4 areas with 4 walls that stop short of cutting each area completely off at each end for easy traversal between them. The areas went from left to right: Home consoles, portable area tables, challenges and tournaments; vendors and merchandise; Arcade; and card tables for stuff like Magic: The Gathering. The vendors they had there…impressive doesn’t even begin to describe it. My scouter had pretty much broke within the first couple of minutes of walking around, my wallet was not ready. They had imported games and consoles, limited/special edition consoles, rare games, sealed games, and old school consoles and games. They had tons of shirts and good artwork by so many people. It was seriously hard not to want to just buy up shit left and right, I need to build far more cash meter to get prepared next time. The various bands that were playing and were going to be playing were selling their cd’s and signing stuff for people in this area as well. The arcade was pretty vast with it’s cabinets. Various Mortal Kombats (no 4), versions of Street Fighter 2 and 3, DDR type machines and Beatmania, Driving cabinets, and NES games that they turned into arcade cabinets like Super Mario Bros, incidentally the first cabinet that you run into in this area is the X-Men game…I’m certain this is not a coincidence. I pretty much spent most of my down time when I wasn’t in concerts, panels and events in the Arcade and the Home Console area. Home console area had systems all over the place…pretty much the only thing that was missing were consoles before the NES and the Wii U. They had 4 player LoZ: 4 swords, Power Stone, Halo 4, Cod, Gears 3, Virtual On, Sonic, ZoE 2nd Runner…list goes on and on for this. I don’t even know the depths of what they had and didn’t have since games were in constant flux at times save for the shooters and the fighting games. My first few moments before my first concert I spent playing MK 1 and 2 with my wife before I played a couple of games with the owner of the arcade machines and then played games with Stuttering Craig from ScrewAttack on the MK2 cabinet, which was pretty awesome. Neither of us was doing anything impressive. I’m relatively average in that game and was having trouble performing specials and moves on the sticks. I tried to at least take a set from Craig but he pretty much beat my ass lol. I think I may have fist bumped him or shook hands with him after acknowledging who he was before I went to my concert. He seemed like a pretty chill ass dude. I never ran into him again…kinda wanted to remove some of the salt I had on me. As an aside, area was open 24/7 so if all you wanted to do play games down there until you were blue in the face then you were more than welcome to indulge yourself…dunno what they’d do to you if they found you passed out on the ground though.
So the concerts man…the concerts. The first concerts I was able to go to were Metroid Metal followed immediately by the Megas on the first day. FUCKING…AWESOME. Wait wait…lemme back up for a minute. There’s an area on the second floor hallway area of the Gaylord that pretty much all of the concerts take place on in 2 separate rooms. 1 of them being the Main Room that was far bigger than the other one…I’d say probably at least 3 times larger. The stage for that room was well sized, the lights were super bright and they had the sound guys right smack dab in the middle of the room. The speakers were also far larger in that room and I didn’t know how powerful they could be until Metroid Metal, the Megas, and Powerglove played. Powerglove made the skin on my face literally feel like it was getting blasted backwards by the sound. So yeah…Metroid Metal and the Megas on my first day in the Main Room…I was not prepared for that shit lol. Hearing MM live was too good for me, they played Prime 1’s theme, Torvus Bog, and Crateria among some others. Then after they were done, 20 minutes later the Megas come on stage play a bunch of their hits, half of them were off of their recent History Repeating: Blue album which I bought on the second day (Favorite songs so far is ‘I Want to Be the One (To Watch You Die)’ and ‘Walk Away From Light’. CD is quite solid IMO, the sound quality and overall post production has gotten noticably better.). The Megas had left the stage thinking they were done after they played their set but the crowd manged to call them back with chants of ‘ONE MORE SONG’. One the encore songs they did, they pulled Mega Ran and one of the members of Metroid Metal out with them to play on guitar…Crazy good shit! Then there was that lady doing her uh…angel bit during ‘Send Me An Angel’…I’ll just say I found her voice interesting and I’ll leave it at that. The powerful speakers combined with the acoustics of the room and light show gave my head a horrible pounding that lingered on into the next day even with Sleep A and Aspirin B assists.
I got a chance to listen to some other bands that I had probably heard of but didn’t go out of my way to listen too. Video Game Orchestra was amazing and the woman they got to sing (Ingrid?) did an amazing job on both ‘Snake Eater’ and ‘Eyes on Me’…They also did a cover of ‘Build That Wall’ from Bastion. The Triforce Quartet was excellent and I believe was the only concert I went too that didn’t have some form of guitar present. They mostly did Mario, Zelda and Halo medleys that sounded beautiful on their arrangements for the string instruments. Those Who Fight was…interesting…I’m just going to assume that they weren’t for me and leave it at that (incidentally…the lady who was doing the angel bit in ‘Send Me An Angel’ was a part of this group…). X-Hunters was pretty great and the 3 guitarists wore some nice X, Zero, and Vile helmets while they played some of their tracks. Dwelling of Duels and the Overclocked University were great to hear some of my favorite OCR music live, the fact that DoD live actually have Housethegrate there and played both ‘Walk on Water’ and ‘Light in the Fortress’ put smiles on my face. Rare Candy was pretty solid even though I felt there was too much synth at times since they had 3 keyboards up there. Protomen had a ton of people show up for their concert and while I was trying to listen to their music I was having a hard time ‘getting them’ since I having a hard time hearing any sources in any of their music. I had to look them up on Wikipedia in order to get them to at least understand…it’s a pity I had to be able to listen to the lyrics because I couldn’t understand anything over the drums and guitars. That drum was vibrating my whole damn body lol. I will say though…my friend picked up their Queen cover cd and thelead singer can fuckin channel Freddie Mercury like nobody’s business. Powerglove…this must be what true face melting feels like since when they played it almost felt like I had stuck my face out of the window of a moving vehicle at times. They played metal versions of the pokemon theme and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and pulled people from the back stage along with a Red Ranger cosplayer. On the last night I got to listen to Yozo Koshiro and DJ Cutman dj for us. Koshiro took a moment to get in the swing of things, I think he was nervous since it was his first time DJing for an american crowd. Once he got into his Streets of Rage section though…it was a wrap (looks like Yuzoboy may have most of Koshiro’s performance on his youtube account). He also took part in making the crowd perform the Collosus yell. DJ Cutman’s bit was the first time I had listened to anything from him and I actually dug most of it, actually ended up buying some of his cds from the vendor room (favorite track so far is ‘Forest Man’).
One other nice thing that happened for me was the fact that I actually got a chance to talk to Stemage at the vendor area and that guy is cool as shit. When I went down there to buy the Metroid Metal Expansion Pack CD, I had told him about having ordered this cd awhile back and how it had gotten lost in the mail. I was going to pay for it again but he actually gave me the CD for free and gave me his album that was based off of Marble Madness with it. I felt like a fucking dick, like I had just cheated and guilt tripped the man out of money which wasn’t my intention. I tried paying for it but he was adamant about me not doing it since I had already paid for it. It was such a small thing but was one of the nicest things any human being had done for me who didn’t even know me. I also asked him about the possibility of putting up that Transformers: The Movie Battle cover that they’ve done at a couple of shows on their website so hopefully they’ll get to that at some point.
Guys…seriously. If you like game music or even games then I’d put MAGfest on your list of things to experience if you haven’t done so already! [/details]
I converted Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island.
Koji Kondo is one of my favorite composers.
OCReMix just put up an album that they did for a fighting game tournament with some random selective themes among them including AE, KOF, Smash, and TTT2.
http://ocremix.org/info/Apex_2013:_Straight_to_the_Top
It’s a short album and I’m gonna take some quick listens to it especially since someone actually did a ReMix on Uematsu’s Brawl Theme
The 6 tracks I’ve listened to so far (not the Smash ones, title one, or Pokemon one) have seemed pretty good. However, that being said, with the Soul Calibur V one it’s really kinda weird hearing someone from OCR do a remix of a song Zircon composed and did.
