Video Game General v8.01D : PC Gaming Golden Age, Big Box (Part 1)

I wonder which version of Dan Hibiki is the most effective, like if I wanted to play the game at a tournament or whatever. I seem to recall him being kind of okay in one of the million versions of Street Fighter IV?

@Pertho is gonna be all over this game like flies flying around :poop:

Thanks for the tag but it doesn’t look like it has the same swag.

I’m definitely willing to give a shot though.

David Cage is a hack and his games are shit, but this is amazing.

It figures that what looks like the most fun I’d ever have with one of his games is an unintentional bug.

Bit of a tangent post incoming.

For the last few weeks I’ve been finding myself playing Sonic Adventure 1&2 at least a little bit, pretty much every night. I don’t know what it is about these games, they’re objectively just not that good, but I played SA2 when I was 7 and I still find myself playing it in my 20’s.

You can beat the whole game in like 2 hours, I think that actually makes it really easy to just pick up and enjoy. It’s such an over the top and overly dramatic game and I think that has made it a lot more endearing as time went on. Of course there’s the Chao Garden as well, which is really its own game and incentivizes you to replay the stages. The extra missions for each stage is a nice touch too.

I also learned about a mechanic I had no idea existed in the game for over 20 years. You can actually boost off of grind rails if you time a jump perfectly at the end of the rail. Gives you a whole animation and everything. Was really shocked to see something I hadn’t seen before.

I know half the people love this game to death, and the other half hates it, but it really did have some ambitious ideas for a game at the time, let alone a Sonic game. The execution of those ideas was just often… Questionable, lol.

Segue into a possibly fun conversation: What are some games you guys know are bad/hated but still enjoy them yourself? Why are you willing to overlook those criticisms?

RDR2 for 30 bucks now…hmm…

Well, some that are hated but I love… Sonic Heroes was the first that came to mind. It was more fun than most of the other 3d outings Sonic and friends have had, and it had some great music…like that track ā€œThis Machineā€ has been in my mp3 collection ever since the game was new.

Diablo 3— most Diablo fans seem to actually hate it, and consider part 2 to be the best in the series…whatever; I continue to have fun, and it’s my most played game of all time by a huge margin at this point. Really, that’s what it all comes down to for me—as long as I enjoy the game, I don’t care much that others think it’s terrible. (sidenote—I’ve mentioned before that at least in my opinion, a lot of Diablo fans have some strange ideas on how an action-RPG should work.)

…and of course a whole system—> The PS VITA. It’s a goddamn shame so many people missed out on portable greatness. It still seems like a Twilight Zone kinda thing to me that the Vita did NOT absolutely crush 3DS. Yeah, I realize I am alone in that opinion. Imagine an alternate reality where it’s still the 80s so it’s the Master System vs. NES…but in that world… the Master System is CRUSHING Nintendo somehow…people actually make jokes about how lame that NES is and how it’s nothing compared to the Master System …or a reality where the Virtual Boy was a huge success, and became the preferred console for many years. That’s how strange this shit is, imo.

Someone posted something about that game Carrion so I thought to myself, ā€œyeah, I should try that out.ā€. I went to launch it, I downloaded it a while ago, and I found out the fuckin’ game dont come out till today. And I cant play it till 5pm. hmhmhm I thought it was funny.

That game looks cool as shit. Let us know if it’s any good.

I can’t really think of too many games that I enjoy but I know are hated other than some Sonic titles. Gotcha Force is probably the only game that I think got panned but I enjoyed the game the death when I played it. Brutal Legend I really enjoyed despite people not liking RTS in their action adventure.

SA1&2 are games where I love 50% of it and hate 50% of it. Any time I’m not playing Sonic/Shadow, I’m pissed off lol.

It’s funny you say that, because I agree that they’re the worst parts of the game, but I’m really not sure if I’d take them out altogether lol. I guess the Tails/Eggman segments could go honestly. I get some genuine enjoyment out of the gem hunt levels… Most of the time at least.

outside of sonic games i have a hard time thinking of something bad that i really love. i can be entertained by shitty games in general but i already go in knowing their kinda shitty.

I spent a lot of time making the perfect Chao both evil and good. I also cannot believe I spent so much time trying to S rank everything in SA2.

What can I say except… LIVE AND LEARN!

ā€œBadā€ games I enjoyed…

Shite PS2 graphics with a plastic filter over everything. Generic third-person shooter gameplay. Thing is…you could ā€œhackā€ into peoples games and control enemy AI opponents. If you were good enough, you could straight up halt peoples progress in the campaign. I caused many, many salty ragequits by becoming the wall players couldn’t climb. I had fun with it, but that’s because the MP was its saving grace. It’s like 3 on Metacritic HAHA. I’d give it like a 7-7.5/10 myself, and that’s because of the hacking mechanic. MINDJACK

Steampunk world. Weird PS2-esque graphics. Third-person shooter gameplay and platforming stuck in the PS2 era and yet…I still kind of enjoyed it all. It’s like the perfect ā€œBā€ game that you blast through over a weekend then kind of forget about. A 5-6/10 at best, a 30/100ish on Metacritic I think.

In this game you actually had to do the platforming yourself, it wasn’t like Uncharted or other games where it’s automated and done for you. It’s also published by Codemasters and in my experience, 9/10 titles published by them range from pure shiiiiieeeet to just OK. Occasionally they publish decent titles though…the Overlord titles are supposed to be solid.

Off hand I can’t think of any ā€œbad gamesā€ that I still go back to and enjoy. I’d have to seriously think about it.

Mainly cause I don’t see the point in subjecting myself to that kind of thing. With movies? Sure. But not as something interactive like a video game.

I’d say your average person who played D2 before D3 either dislikes D3, or they don’t think it’s as good as D2.

People who never played 2 but started with 3 seem to love it. I think ignorance is bliss when it comes to newer titles in series like these. People who have played Street Fighter before IV and V most likely don’t think much of those titles compared to older games in the series, and I’d bet people who started with newer SF titles really like them and either aren’t willing to go back to try out the older titles, or just don’t care and are having fun with the newer ones.

I still wait for the day you buy D2 for 20 bucks, followed by making a Necromancer and filling the screen with minions. You can literally get around a 100 minions at once. Skeletons, Skeleton mages, random monsters you can revive to fight for you, Golems…not even PoE let’s you get that many minions.

This game is fucking awesome if you can get past all the fucking jank, which it has in spades. Fucking awesome game tho. Shits all over Mass Effects ā€œDecisions with real inpact.ā€

oh yeah–-Unreal Championship 2— not necessarily in the ā€œbadā€ category… more of ā€œI love it but no one else agrees with that opinion.ā€

I love absolutely everything about it…this game is a classic to me…but very people ever gave a shit about it. The action was on fire, man… fast-paced, off the wall shit like wall-jumping, flight and other super-powers, option for 3rd person view, guns with alternate firing modes, melee attacks and using melee to reflect shots back (*one of the most satisfying things ever to be in a shooter …when you managed to melee-reflect a sniper-shot… then that legendary announcer dude is like ā€œHEADSHOT…REJECTED!!!ā€ I won’t soon forget that 1 day I did that; I wish I had it recorded… I was trying to melee another player and just accidentally reflected the sniper-shot right back at this other dude who was far off in the distance. This moment was delicious.

It saddens me that on the small chance of the Unreal franchise ever becoming popular again…we all know it’s going to be ā€œjust another shooterā€ kind of thing again, unlike the melee/shooter (+3rd person view option) mixture of greatness that UC2 was.

I remember making comparisons to other shooters at least on console at the time. The giant at the time of course was Halo…and to me, once you’ve been hit with all this fast-paced, over-the-top action in your face… playing Halo was like sloooooow-motion, underwater bullshit in comparison.

edit—annnnd UC2 had vampire characters with cool powers…so you know that’s automatically bonus points from me just on that.

Unreal Tournament is about the only FPS I really got into other than GoldenEye on n64. Dunno what it is about those games, but I LOVED UT3. Sadly, that game didn’t seem to take off.

As for bad games I liked, I’d go with that Van Helsing PS2 game. It was meant to be a DMC ripoff and was based on the movie which had its moments. The game wasn’t great, but it was good enough lol.
