Oh yeah, that was Japanese only game back in the day. It was back when Konami had no issue with making fun of their own IP, made a whole series off making parodies of their Shmup games. Kid Dracula was born of that time.
how much can you do with a system that is based on making menu selections for each character then watching the cute animations before doing it again?
a Quick time sequence in the animation? more luck based actions? doing a QCF motion as you choose your attack to make it do more damage? incorporating a grid to for movement which implement more effective hits? the one i liked was making the battlefield 3D in that your team isnāt on one side of the screen vs the enemy on another. Attacks had AoE and can knock enemies around the field closer/farther to you
Never liked the Eterian or Aetelier series unfortunately and indivisible was wack.
New rpgs coming have potential though.
Yea not huge on Etrian or Aetlier either but not gonna deny they do what they do very well. Itās just not for me.
I have Indivisible but I havenāt gotten to play it yet.
@DoctaMario Lots ideas we could still do. No ones taken The Legend of Legia system as far as it could go for example.
Legend of Dragoon type system has legs still to.
Or a new timing based system like Shadow Hearts and itās Ring system.
Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 are good tactical turn based rpgs. On the other hand I would argue Fire Emblem is pretty mediocre and only remains popular due to waifus and husbandos.
DQ11 proves sometimes you donāt have to change too much and it will be good. Trails of Cold Steel games are fun, but compared to the older series like Trails in the Sky, they give you a lot more freedom and thus easily becoming OP.
Also lol@pokemon being a good turn based rpg. The battle system is garbage.
shrug you could make this argument for all genres.
Lulz at opinions different from my own.
āLul I donāt like this game so that makes it objectively badā
A dumb hot take as old as time itself.
Trying to convince someone that turn based rpgs arenāt dry, and you bring up pokemon, the game whoās battle system has been the same since the first pokemon game where it takes more time to get through the text for each action than the fight itself.
Ok.
Iām not trying to convince anybody of anything. Iām laying down examples of what tons of people consider to be good turn based games, in response to someone arguing that there are none nowadays. Could really care less if you personally like those titles, lots of people do.
Pokemon doesnāt change much about the formula because it obviously doesnāt need to. Letās not forget a lot of these games nowadays completley and utterly steal conventions that PokĆ©mon set up decades ago. (Like I dunno, fuckin Persona)
We can both pull a Million and hate all turn based games off the bat, that still doesnāt mean there arenāt objectively solid examples of what people want from the genre. Like, I fuckin hate RTS games for the most part. Doesnāt mean Iām gonna walk around acting like we have no good examples of it these days. shrug
Additionally, I kinda find it laughable that you praise Dragon Quest for changing basically nothing all these years, while condemning PokĆ©mon for doing the almost exact same thing. Why fix something that isnāt broken. I canāt think of a franchise with more spin offs that can offer you whatever you could ever want, than PokĆ©mon. People love the main games BECAUSE they are consistently familiar. You have some people that have PokĆ©mon theyāve transfered from game to game for literally decades. Why should they drastically uproot and change that entire ecosystem just because the people who never liked the games anyway can be satisfied.
Sometimes I just really donāt know what people want.
I wasnāt trying to convince him they arenāt dry. I was showing evidence they havenāt fallen off and are still around in large number. Them being dry is his personal opinion, nothing there I can really change. If we where talking the PS360 era where turn based fell off hard and numbers dropped a lot then yea sure, but this gen? Naw son. Big resurgence, they are everywhere.
Already addressed this when Eskills said he didnāt liKe Aetelier and Etrian.
Now that I can agree with. Turn based games were in a pretty weird lull during that Gen. We got like, what⦠a handful of Disgaea games and Resonance of Fate? Lol. Lost Odyssey and Stick of Truth too I guess. I donāt feel like the selection was even close to what we have now.
iām still surprised nobody has just stolen grandiaās battle system not do a twist on it straight up steal that shit.
All this talks about JRPGās are boring and Iām just sitting here having already sunk almost 20 hours into DQXI in less than 2 days. lol.
Itās so fun.
I like what Bravely did with turn-based mechanics. Gave it a modern spin with real-time strategy.
I always tout FFVI as my favorite turn-based RPG, but a lot of that is nostalgia. I havenāt played it in a long time and Iām willing to bet Iād lose interest if I played it today.
I lost interest in Octopath, despite the really cool thing they did with the graphics. I think that was partially due to not having one cohesive story, and also part because I feel like I may have outgrown the genre. I still think back favorably of the times I had playing those games though.
Iām interested in trying out FFVIIRE. From the looks of it they did a cool synthesis of real-time and turn-based mechanics. I never quite clicked with FFXV, but I really enjoyed the paradigm system of XIII (unpopular opinion, I know).
All that said, Iām looking forward to Bravely 2nd and Bravely 2 (forgot thereās a difference lol), but I just donāt get as excited about the genre as I used to during the SNES era.
I still want to play both those games. I can give a pass to South Park just because Iām such a big fan of the show.
I love any battle system that rips off Valkyrie Profile, shit is just fun as hell.
Stick of Truth is really good but itās also insanely broken. Once you get multi-hit item/weapons that gives bleed status the game instantly breaks and you can plow through it
thereās an bravely second and also bravely default 2. two different games its weird i know.
Bravely Default and Bravely Second is the same cast but different stories. Bravely Default II is brand new cast brand new adventure but still has the core features like the Bravely/Default turns and the job class asterisks
From the outside looking in it can be hard to understand though
some ateliers have awesome battle systems. mainly the ones that are just mana khemia in 3d.
also iām actually super biased toward turn based games i love seeing cool animations and my ragtag group square up with the ultimate life form that takes up most of the screen. its just not the same when i play an action rpg and iām wailing on a giant monsters foot.
You know what game I think had the best battle system of this gen? Sekiro
