This was actually a bit pf a controversy back when UC4 first came out. Dome people qhere pretty upset Nadine was played by a white woman even tho Nadine herself is black. Lot of conparisons to black face.
Uncharted 1ās biggest problem is the level design. Like you get nice and somewhat calm sections of just climbing shit, only to run into an area that is clearly designed to be an arena for a gunfight against a few enemy waves. This is the one thing that greatly improved in all of the subsequent games and not every enemy encounter locale feels like it was put in solely for the purpose of creating a temporary stopgap for the player with some pewpew
It was dumb then and itās dumb now. That type of logic would prevent @Shockdingo 's epic Bison voice acting.
I think UC1s biggest problem is every single gun is a darringer. Even the DE hits like weak sauces. I dont mind enviroments clearly set up for pew pew because they are well desogned for pew pew. This is a good thing. I hate being stuck shooting in an environment that clearly wasnāt made for it.
I just went for the headshots most of the time
As far as the combat is concerned the only dislike towards it from me is how the roll magnitizes you towards a cover
Oh dude itās so stupid. If we follow this line of thought to its conclusion then James Earl Jones isnāt allowed to voice Vader anymore because Anakin is white.
Better get Phil Lamaar off that Samurai Jack game, Jack is Asian, not black.
Like legit 85% of Philās work just vanished because skin color.
No more women voicing young boys, they arenāt boys after all.
I could go on all fucking day. Fucking jokes.
I started it last night and got about 30 percent (according to the progress in my save file) though the game. Iām digging it. The gun play is a little clunky, but that might be because Iām more used to FPSes. I like the adventure vibe and the locations and platforming. Iām hoping thereās more puzzle solving stuff like there was in the first level. Overall, its got me interested enough to keep going with the series. Looking forward to try 2 out.
Iām with you 100% on this. Even on the joke that is Twitter most people Iāve seen find it stupid.
The saddest part is that itās no longer about talent, merit, or whatās good for the character and the story. Itās about making sure the person I never see looks like the person they are PRETENDING to be.
Fucking sad.
There are a few down the line but theyāre pretty simple. The sequels had cooler puzzles
Your jawās gonna drop when you start 2, itās fucking incredible all around
Dude donāt over hype it. 2 is great but donāt over sell it man.
Itās just window dressing. Like a lot this nonsense going on right now. Itās like what does any of this have to do with police reform? Screwing up the VA industry, this line of thinking kills anime dubs BTW, and changing Aunt Jemina isnāt the damned point. Sorryā¦man. Salty about all this virtue signaling nonsense.
Iām salty about it to dude. Aunt Jemima is my syrup bro lol.
Kidding aside yes I find the virtue signaling to be shameful.
Heh, thanks for the kind words man! In regards to the current Voice actor situation, itās a pretty nuanced, difficult issue. Lots of Black VAs on twitter are weighing in, Iāve kind of burned myself out on it, but I can say a few words about it.
Ideally, the goal is āanyone can play anyone and rock the roleā, but sadly thatās not always possible. And, before anyone says āwhat about Cree Summer, Phil LaMarr, Kevin Michael Richardson, etc?ā Theyāre amazing performers and I look up to them, but things arenāt universally like that for the rest of us black voice actors. Theyāre legends, but for the rest of us who arenāt carrying star power, things are different and really difficult on the entry stage.
One thing thatās an unfortunate (and unseen to the general public) issue is that many times, black VOs are called in only for black roles and not all of them areā¦great. Sometimes, itās random thug, random pimp, best friend to character, etc. This will happen and when casually talking with our white peers, weāll learn that theyāll be called in for everything and many times even get the black roles on top of that. Part of the issue is beyond the casting calls, itās also what are the writers and creators putting out there thatās not just side characters, stereotypes and whatnot.
Iāve heard or stories of black and minority voice actors intentionally, if they have the copy, reading for the āwrong roleā like a hero rather than the side character theyāre called in for, just to challenge expectations. In many cases the casting directors are wowed and this allows them some upward mobility to get a chance to break out of the sidelined auditions theyād normally get. Sadly, this isnāt always possible, in some cases, you canāt even do this, because youāre only called for that specific, pigeonholed black role and thereās no available copy of the main character.
I donāt voice in anime, but itās much, MUCH more difficult for black VOs there. Itās frankly depressing. Thereāve been so many bright, talented young people whoāve tried out, get thrown scraps, are barred from reading for lead roles and more meatier roles, get disappointed, move out of state to try and secure more work or leave the VO industry entirely.
One thing that happens is that things can go great with an audition and a local casting director, but when some of the higher ups in a production want to see your picture, that can be a stumbling block. My buddy Mac dealt with this and recently has opened up about his difficulties in his 14 year career. Others have started noticing a trend thatās rather unfortunateā¦there are more productions that want to focus on having more attractive male and female VOs for marketing or even in some extreme cases, casting actors based on how close they look to the character and can cosplay them or if they have a large twitter following.
So hypothetical time, with something like the above, say I nail an audition for Superman in a new DC animated universe, have my info sent higher up the foodchain, but a producer much above the casting director wants a headshot (not something normally needed or requested in the realm of VO), they discover Iām black and a hefty guy, rather than a Henry Cavil lookalike hunk they want for Supermanās looks. Iām gone and maybe if Iām lucky, they might feel bad for me and toss me, ārandom black bystander #2ā. Ouch.
Iām more in the indie game, online content creator stuff, but when I was starting out, I didnāt want people to know I was black for fear of being pigeonholed into roles. The union and bigger budget L.A. scene is different than the indie and online ways.
There are some amazing people telling their stories on twitter and I can link to those if anyone is interested, but itās a big, nuanced issue like I said.
Weāre not salivating at things like Cleveland getting recast, or Jenny Slate stepping down from her role. We just want to get opportunities like our white peers and get a chance to read for available roles. Itās all about getting a fair shake and itās going to take more than just a few white VOs whoāve been voicing a black character stepping down. It needs to be a top-down change as some have suggested.
Also, Iām speaking for myself here, but Iād be scared as hell to take up the role of someone like Cleveland or a Simpsons character after a result like this. The fear of negative fan reaction or even just the pressure to be exactly like my predecessor would make me not even want to read for the role.
Hope this made sense and wasnāt too rambling.
Thanks for the insight man. Your perspective on this issue is far more important and valuable than mine or anyone else without first hand experience.
I donāt know how serious your eye injury is, but if you are interested look into infrared eye mask therapy. Since some years ago I learned in some European hospitals they are exposing patients to infrared radiation after surgery because it helps and quickens healing.

Biological effects and medical applications of infrared radiation.
I learned about it because my aunt thatās over 70 had to change her reading glasses subscription because her eyesight actually improved a lot due to infrared therapy. And sheās got the reading glasses prescriptions to prove it!! Not to mention now she can read words that are far without the need of glasses
still going thru Streets of Rage 4 again and again, getting those points for the unlocksā¦ I actually didnāt notice until later playthrus that spiked part on the wall when you fight the red-leather dominatrix woman and her goonsā¦the damage if you keep knocking her over there by the spikes is pretty insane.
Most hated enemy continues to be Knife Guy and āDonovanāā¦ the āthug lifeā looking dude with the shades that tends to catch any weapon you throw at him, and has that incredible anti-air uppercut (so you canāt really afford the risk of a jump attack on that dudeā¦especially not when heās getting back up; no start-up animation on that shit either; the uppercut is just THERE immediately to knock you away.) The Thai-fighter dudes are some annoying assholes too.
Bloodlines 2ā out of the blue Iām wondering now if you get to have ghoul servants at any point in the gameā¦ Iām guessing probably not, unfortunately. Also, as with any vampire game, Iām hoping thereās opportunities to turn people as well, but that might be unlikely as well (*itās also a dangerous thing to do in VTM loreā¦an āunsanctionedā embrace is generally frowned upon, likely drawing some negative attention andā¦and a possible execution for you and your ānewbornā fledgling.)
ā¦it will be interesting to see what happens if you break the āmasqueradeā (doing obviously supernatural things in public) tooā¦ it would be nice if they showed off some more of the game which may answer these questions.
āThis has never worked before so it will never work in the future.ā
Great logic there. If people have this mentality no wonder people love COD 15 and all these HD remakes now a days. Letās keep doing the same shit over and over.
Summary
As someone who played the game with no knowledge of the story, I never once thought Abby was put āin placeā of Joel. My perspective wasnāt tainted by knowing what happens prior to playing it. That is simply a major factor that you seem to be overlooking.
I donāt even think Abby was āsetup for failureā at all. Her character arc was awesome to play through and Iām pretty sure that I felt exactly what ND intended. Initially I hated her but as soon as you see what happened with her dad, you slowly change. And through her dreams you see she is slowly letting it go as well. Incredible story telling by ND.
You are free to have your opinion on the story and what not. But the reality is that discussing the game/story with someone who hasnāt played the game, let alone someone who hasnāt played it but knew the stories from the leaks months back and already decided what they think of it months before it came out, is not the same as discussing it with someone who is digesting it for the first time playing it themselves. It just has a completely different effect in these two scenarios.
I burned through the initial story mode of Mortal Kombat 11 last night. I love how off the wall the time travel bullshit gets in this game. The inconsistent quality of the voice acting makes it funnier aside from Ronnie phoning it in as Sonya. In the middle of Aftermath now and Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa is absolutely slaughtering it.
