Video Game General v8.01D : PC Gaming Golden Age, Big Box (Part 1)

I know a lot of you all don’t like Dunkey, but I finally watched his TLOU2 video because I finished the game, and he is pretty much spot on with his assessment.

Wow I never once practiced the guitar in that game and did not realize you could freestyle like that if you did. I only did the stuff required to progress the story. Even that shit I did had absolutely no rhythm lol.

I know the gameplay TLOU2 is solid but I have to see what’s so bad in the story to make ppl spazz :joy:

It depends if you are going to play it or not. The only people that I have seen dislike the story are those who had no intention of playing it anyways.

I still gotta beat the first lol and surprisingly I’ve avoided spoilers this far

That’s just false, unless you’re talking on this board. Plenty of streamers seem to not like the story, for example. It’s to the point you can throw a rock and hit a compilation of them reacting with negativity toward the ending. Though, to be fair, there are plenty who like it just fine.

I don’t really care about the 10 or 20 streamers who were mad about the story months before the game came out. The “plenty of streamers” make up less than a fraction of 1% of the people playing this game. It’s a super vocal minority who just happen to have a platform.

Yeah it’s easy to avoid spoilers if you want to. I didn’t know a thing about TLOU2 other than that very first trailer they showed at the E3 it debuted at. I didn’t watch any more trailers or read anything else about it. Now that I beat it and am reading what everyone is/was up in arms about with the story, all I can do is facepalm for the most part. There is some valid criticism that I’ve seen but it is few and far between. Most of it is “LOL LGBQT STORY ISN’T WHAT I WANTED!” from people who never intended to play it anyways.

I’m searching for reviews on youtube now just to hear some of these streamers opinions, and I am entertained by Angry Joe generally speaking, but this idiot is reviewing the story before he is even half way through the game. It’s just so ignorant.

I broke out House Of The Dead: Overkill this week after talking about it in here and this game is a MASTERPIECE. I wish they’d also reissue that Vampire Night rail shooter that’s in the HotD vein too. I have it on PS2 but it was a pretty great game in its own right and seems like it got lost in the shuffle. Might have to hook up the old PS2 and give that one a go.

What you expect him to do? The story already lost him early on and it isn’t getting any better for him. He rightly predicted the direction the story will go.

He’s already finished the game, and that opinion remained pretty consistent.

And on the whole point of “people who PLAY the game seem to like it”, while I shouldn’t talk, I feel I can. I haven’t played this or the last one. I have watched all the cinematics and accompanying gameplay though. That’s how I became a fan of 1. I can honestly say that for 2, had I somehow dodged the spoilers and played that, I would have been furious.

That is what seems to have happened to the majority of people who were angry about the story leaks. They had already made up their mind and are doing everything they can to justify their decision they made months before the game came out. Go into the TLOU2 thread on here it’s just a bunch of people who hated the game months ago talking about how right they were and feeling good about themselves.

@axeman61 and as I mentioned, he’s doing everything in his power to make sure that “he is right” and that he made the right decision months ago when the story came out. There was no convincing him otherwise. I was specifically talking about his “review” about 6 hours into the game before having a clue of why things happened the way they did. I’m not going to even bother watching the later parts where he streams the parts of him finding out WHY everything happened.

I mean that dude plays an internet character so he’s not going to change his mind. I mean he was in a room with like 4 other dudes who I am assuming have the same view point as him just looking for commentary. There was always only 1 way it was going to go regardless of how the game played out.

The whole thing feels way more political than it should - it’s a video game.

The fact of the matter too is that you simply can’t get an unbiased review from ANYBODY who read the leaked story before the game came out.

EDIT:

And no, you can’t really talk about the game itself, since you didn’t play it. The story, sure. But not the actual game. @Volt and I have had a decent small discussion in the other thread if you want to take it there, where we’re actually discussing things and not just NO YOU’ing eachother.

Not everybody that hates the game’s story read the leaks. You can see the disappoint in some people as the story plays out. Personally I rolled my eyes at the moments that make Abby sympathetic as most of the game made her as unlikable as possible.

I don’t know about you but there were several times in that story where I felt it should have ended but it kept going.

Summary

Once the game reach the part where Ellie went after Abby a second time is where I started to feel the story is overstaying it’s welcome.

I did feel that way. I mentioned on another forum I think (don’t think here) that it felt like LOTR: Return of the King a few times, that I thought it was over and then it kept going.

And I fucking loved that because I did not want it to end. I would have taken 10 more hours of it if I could have.

But I am not sure if you played the game or not but I’m assuming you did not play it, so sorry if I am wrong about that.

I never understood and will never understand people who watch play throughs of games instead of playing it if it’s something they are interested in. I mean this is a video game forum and everyone on here should understand that there is such a huge difference between watching a game and playing it. Maybe it’s a generational thing and I’m not really part of the youtube generation. I simply will never understand that part of it.

With TLOU, the story takes as much if not higher priority over the game. I didn’t play TLOU1 (as it’s not the type of game I’m into), but I’m pretty sure if it was my type and I had gotten into it I would have liked it. Because already I liked the story and that’s what everyone talks about.

With this, it’s the same scenario, but in a different way. Not only that, the gameplay runs against the story in some cases.

But this whole sentiment that I see (not just from you) that you HAVE to play it to like it is BS, at least in the case of a game that’s built on story.

Which is why I said a lot of the review-bombing is overblown.

I think there are legit narrative structures with the story, and let’s be honest here, Abby’s camp is a bit on the unrealistic side, but it does explain why she’s so buff
and why she loses so much muscle mass at the end.
For another bad take, take Lev for example.

Lev is not a bad character at all.
Cultists wanted to hook the young girl to an “elder” so you know there was some fuckery going on. She wanted none of it for multiple reasons. It’s perfectly understandable.
But if you just go to 4Chan or whatever? Holy shit, it’s a cesspool.

The game has legit issues and virtues without the whole SJW nonsense.

Some people are more interested in the Story. :man_shrugging:

For example, I watched MK11’s story because I was curious about it, but I sure as hell ain’t playing a second of that game. I just don’t like NRS-style gameplay.

I’m starting Uncharted tonight while the baby sleeps. Never played them before, but I hear they’re pretty good, right?

Bro are you really going to compare the gameplay in TLOU2 to that of a fighter? Come on now don’t be dense.

Play 1 to understand the mastery 2 is. 3 and 4 come close, but don’t top 2 in my opinion.
