Video Game General 7.0: Day Juan Ys: MoC June 9th & Wonderful 101 June 30th!

PlayStation master architect Mark Cerny confirmed that the new console will be able to play PS4 games at launch. Most of them anyway.

As Cerny explains, the PS5 "incorporates any differences in the previous console’s logic into the new console’s custom chips."That means that “the logic and features sets that PS4 games rely on is still available in backward compatibility modes.” Cerny says this is the crux for backward compatibility on PS5, as opposed to adding the PS4 chipset into the PS5 chip which is “extremely expensive.”

The result is that most PS4 titles will be playable on PS5 at launch. Cerny specifically mentions that Sony looked at the top 100 most-played PS4 games and “almost all off them” will be backward compatible. However, every title has to be individually tested because some “game code just can’t handle it.”

Jesus fucking christ Sony

Yeah, after this presentation I’m not even gonna bother with PS5 until they make a Pro version in a couple of years

What?

How does that even work?

Ok, that was hella confusing. Let me see if I got this tho.

As long as the PS5 runs the games well it’s good? Is that what you mean? That’s a good point.

The Switch is a terrible example lmao. It outsells the Xbox because of its exclusives (BotW and Smash Ultimate are system sellers by themselves.) and itd gimmicks, not because of graphics.

Hell, the Switch loses in graphics to all current gen consoles.

Maybe, but the PS5 might actually take this gen because of its exclusives. It’s way too soon to say.

How’s the price tag though?

How?

Ideally 400$. Realistically closer to 450$ (as was suggested by that Forbes article about Sony struggling to keep the costs down). Worst case scenario it’s 500$ or higher and looks even more of a joke compared to XBSX

A lot of that presentation was way over my head, but the main takeaways I got from it are:

-Super fast load times
-Larger possible game worlds
-3D audio support

Good stuff. We’ll see how much it all costs.

Chips are reaching their limit they can’t make the transistors in those things anymore smaller. Chips are as small as they can get.

They say at this time now is the time for programmers to step up their game and stop relying in the hardware to make up for their mistakes, you know like the old days used be.

I’m listening to the vid now on my lunch, correct me if I’m wrong but I think Cerny said that devs have the choice to upgrade ps4 games through BC?

The same way it has on Xbox since the 360. It has a powerful emulator program included.

the instantaneous loading sounds good but until i see some games its looking like wait for a ps5 pro by then the bc kinks will be worked out and there will be at least a couple of exclusives otherwise i can just upgrade the storage in my pc and call it a day.

Graphics matter very little to me. It’s all about art direction and tone for me. A game can be using cutting edge technology to shape its world but if it’s world is boring to look at or uninteresting to me in any way than why would I want to look at that for X amount hours?

Could the game still be enjoyable? Absolutely. But would it being a constant bore or an eye sore distract me from that fact? Absolutely.

And while features and specs are cool the only thing that really matters about video game consoles are the video games that’s available for them and how they perform.

I bought a switch because of the games that would be available for it and would continue to be available for it.

I bought a PS4 for the same reason.

If Xbox would stop relying on its Tri Force of Mediocrity that is Gears, Forza and Halo maybe I’d give a shit about them.

That’s not to say they haven’t been doing anything to better their footing at the end of this generation into the next. They have. A lot. But I’m either not interested in it, IE Game Pass. Or they haven’t done anything to prove they know what they’re doing with it. IE: All the Studio’s Xbox bought last year.

Im not a specs guy, but they couldnt make the hard drive at least 1 TB?
The games are going to be bigger probably in 100 gb range so I was kind of hoping for 1-2 TB.

It’d probably be too expensive.
