Video Game General 7.0: Day Juan Ys: MoC June 9th & Wonderful 101 June 30th!

Blizzcon being cancelled disappoints me. I wanted to see what Blizzard would fuck up this year.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE GAMES EVER IS CLASHING WITH MY LITERAL FAVORITE GAME EVER

I just use “exploration based platformer” w/ whatever gimmick is attached.

Cause yeah, Metroidvania rolls off the tongue and people strong armed it into gaming lexicon but for several reasons RSG mentioned and other reasons it’s an unfair and often very inaccurate description of a game.

I like “combat oriented strategy game” for souls like titles too. It’s how I usually describe Blasphemous to people

I think I have less of a problem with “Souls Like” because despite it being derivitive of other things, it’s kinda carved out it’s own little definition and doesn’t do the title it’s based off any injustice.

Though, it is just as overused as Metroidvania. And often incorrectly too.

Really? You got some pre-SoTN, none Metroid adventute games to recommend?

I’d love to dig more into games I may have missed.

This. On PS4 I can count on one hand the number of truly unplayable matches I’ve had, and except for one from south America, they’ve all been from the US.

And speaking of Metroidvanias, that Last Faith game looks UH-mazing!

Yeah the biggest problem with Metroidvania is that it is basically a term that may have been incorrectly used in it’s creation and is constantly being incorrectly used currently due to folks in the media or promoting a title not knowing or understanding since it hits such a broad set of rules they can get folk into the game that might not have been interested if it was just a platformer like one game or the other.

Because if you look at things, the exploration based platformers didn’t start getting love until after the term was made and popularized.

Simon’s Quest is technically a metroidvania :joy:

Words like “metroidvania” “rougue-like” “souls-like” etc are all marketing terms anyway. It doesn’t matter if they get used correctly or not if you buy the game because you think it’ll be just like q game you already like.

Simon’s Quest isn’t as much a Metroidvania as it is just a travesty.

That’s more on how bad translations were at the time. If you play rom hacks with the proper dialogue it’s actually a solid title.

And we got Heather as a playable survivor. Jesus christ, what a pleasant surprise. I was just about getting a little tired of this game and they pull this crazy shit. I’m fully back in.

If I can’t get a good Silent Hill game after 4, then goddammit this is the next best thing.

Have fun guys

I don’t think fixing the shitty dialog saves it. The game is just an annoying chore to play. Even without NPC’s outright telling you wrong information, the backtracking, the terrible enemies and the game coming to a FULL STOP every time the sun went down all made for a true headache of a game.

It’s not though. If the translation had been better I don’t think anyone would have had any issues with it. Once you don’t have to worry about that, it’s actually a pretty good game.
