I’m just talkin. I’m not trying to convince you or anyone else of anything. I have an hour and a half before work. shrug
I would argue with you a bit more (you know i love to argue ) but i had an accident on my bike (bicycle, not motor bike) this sunday, and i shouldnt be typing at all due the injuries on my hands
plus i have not sleeped in hours and is starting oto make difficult both type and write in english, lol
Y’all think dead cells is a metroidvania?
get well hectatom. Wiping out always sucks
Yea, and you know I can get into a debate something fierce to.
Sorry about the bike accident. That sucks. Glad you’re ok enough to argue genre labels with me. Get better tho man.
I haven’t played it so I can’t say based on experience. Based on what I have read from people here tho, no I wouldn’t consider it one. It’s too randomized to be one imo.
Though there’s more than “quirks” to these genre, I don’t see how identifying subgenres doesn’t help. I will say for sure it is not a hindrance. The styles are markedly recognizable. I am sure the buddy @abbachio will confirm.
I know it’s not the main point of the argument, but you all don’t expect me to be quiet about metal, don’t you? !!!
edit: I’ll throw you a fun challenge for fun @Radiantsilvergun3 tell me what’s genre is this song without looking for the answer on the internet
Dead Cells isn’t Metroid OR Castlevania honestly. It takes elements from Metroid in terms of progression but that’s pretty much it.
After listening for a few seconds it sounds like Thrasher Metal to me but I really don’t know I haven’t listened to metal in like 15 years and am hardly anything resembling an expert. I don’t even know who this band is.
Soon as dude started singing I turned it off. Not my kinda jam.
you were close, so I’ll tell you anyway!! Some thrash, some black metal, and some filth and sleaze from rock n’ roll
Discussing genres of Metal gives me ulcers.
I stick to simply adventure games. It places emphasis on what they are at the core and doesn’t take away from the true pioneers of the genre. Same problem with resident evil games in the early going. It’s not the original just merely the one that popularized the genre.
That is because many people confuse themes with genres.
Like for example, the whole Viking Metal thing, which isnt a genre.
Most bands fall into Folk Metal, is just that they have a shared theme that unifies them.
Genres on Metal arent really a complicated thing , is just that there are both people who complicate thing unnecesarily by labeling everything as a genre, and people who think that labels are useless and unnecesary.
So they are their throats every time that the sibject is brought up
Y’all think dead cells is a metroidvania?
Dead Cells is a rogue like.
Wouldnt Dead Cells technically be a Rogue-Lite?
It’s really not complicated. That’s why I’m so over differentiating between all these different types of Metal. Back when I was 14 I would definitely argue with people about the difference between Metal, Black Metal, Speed Metal, Deathcore, Math Metal, Melodic Metal, progressive deathcore speed metal… Such a headache. I can’t be bothered to split hairs over something so arbitrary anymore. Metal has branched off into a bunch of things, just like video game genres do.
Funny thing is, it’s labeled as both.
I guess I’m in the middle here 'cos I hate the terms metroid-vania and soulslike but find sub-genre labels in music helpful, so /shrugs.
I’d try and get more into but I have a massive headache so my brain dont word good

Well, that is the prize of evolution.
New changes bring new needs for defining them.
It could be seen as arbitrary.
But if you come saying that you like death metal, that could mean eaither this

On the Metroidvania thing… I dunno, I’ve always felt like the term is a bit disengenious. It implies both games were equally responsible for being fundamental elements in the evolution of game design, when really Metroid paved the way for a lot of the conventions we see in your typical “Metroidvania”. More specifically: Super Metroid. Which was an OBVIOUS and HEAVY influence for Castlevania, considering the game we got only a few years later.
I realize it doesn’t really roll off the tongue quite as well, but I’d honestly almost prefer people to just say “Metroid clones” or something. Kinda like how people were calling other FPS games “Doom clones” for awhile there.
Though, there has to be a line somewhere, right? Like, considering the many elements Dark Souls takes from games like Metroid and Zelda, as well as classic table top RPG’s, it’s kinda weird to me that this concoction of elements has become “Souls Like”. Does that mean “Souls Likes” are also Metroidvanias…?
I think it gets very derivitive when people start taking established genres of, well, anything, and then start applying their own terminology to it. I mean I get it, this is how language and words form and evolve. I just think there’s a fine line between discernment and being overly meticulous.
