This was great. I liked the part where he talks about just playing sets over tournaments(mostly because he’s been to enough). I think a lot of newcomers get too caught up in the tournament scene and only worry about the results.
Tournaments are boring asf for me. Too much waiting around. There are casual stations, but I cannot sit and play casuals all day and night. I get tired quick. I’m what someone mentioned earlier in this thread, competitive, but casual player.
Thats because instead of teaching people what 99% of the FGC was, tournaments and eSporty stuff got blown up. So at no point was it really explained to people that an overwhelming majority if FGC didnt go to tournaments.
I had a silly ass exchange with a friend of mine over it. The guy loves eSporty stuff. We’re talking about something or other and he goes:
Yeah, Im a big fan of the FGC.
I look at it all like bro, you’re a fan if a bunch of dudes running casuals at somebody’s appartment? Wtf are you trying to say?
I’d try explaining to him before that the scene was more than just competing. Wanting to get good and play at a high level doesnt necessarily mean tournaments. We have a lot of FGC casual players (people who dont join tournaments) who are absolute monsters. Those guys are as much a part of the scene as the guys going to Evo.
But we got what we got so things are how they are.
I mean it’s not like they couldn’t, inticreates was just committed to the switch it seemed. I don’t know what changed their mind on that but they’ve been pretty consistently releasing their stuff on PS4 so far since Luminous Avenger X
Bought the MMX collection v2 on sale last week, was cheap enough that I figured it was worth it to try X8 again. Playing through X6 (which I had only done once before), it dawned on me that the game really feels more like a decent to good ROM hack than a proper game. I do like a few things about it better than X5, which really feels like a slog at points, but overall it just feels amateur.
Again, I’m the odd man out, I thought X6 was OK. The fact it was brutally punishing and unfair at times made me like it more for some reason. I thought the music was decent too.
It’s been years tho so my opinion on it may change if I play it again
Just a lot of things left raw that are really annoying. Shit being thrown everywhere haphazardly (many of the nightmare effects are really bad about this), some really crappy or tedious bosses, up + slash with Zero making you dive when there are lots of areas that you need to hold up to grab wires over pits, tons of really annoying/cheesy enemies that force you to wait over and over, sections that you literally can’t pass or even bypass if you’re using the wrong armor (including alternate paths that respawn you to these choke points), etc.
It’s not “bad”, it just feels a lot like some of the more raw/unpolished points you see in indie games. I do think it has the best Zero sprite/animations, for the record. And as said, I do think it made some improvements over X5. 5 had way too many sections that make you wait over and over, the boss gauntlet with its level 96 enemies was stupid, getting interrupted by the comms constantly was annoying, the timer mechanic sucked, etc.
