“Scary” games tend to be filled with stuff I hate, cheap jump scares, scarce resources, an abundance of instant kills, enemies popping up from behind you, terrible check points, respawning enemies, and a painfully weak playable character.

I guess you wouldn’t like Silent Hill on the Wii. You can’t fight at all, only run. Might’ve as well called it “Silent Hill: Run Away” edition.

Isn’t that most horror games in the past decade, let’s take away all their weapons and force them to hide in a closet for 10 minutes.

Most INDIE Horror titles are hide and go seek simulators yes.

They probably just don’t have a budget for a decent combat system after most of it went towards the GFX so they make you able to hide in lockers and call it a day.

Amnesia was one of the shittiest games I’ve ever played. Decent atmosphere but cornhole everything else.

Weak playable characters varies for the premise of the game.
We expect the 12 year old girl in a victorian era game to be weak, we don’t expect paramilitary police with some fancy name (like S.T.A.R.S. ) to be weak.

The resource issue in horror games is a delicate balancing act. Too far in either direction and it doesnt work.

My personal favorite horror game last-gen was Dead Space 1

My favorite horror title this generation is The Evil Within 1

It’s especially annoying with dyanmic difficulty depending on how well you’re doing in some games. REmake 2 would make it so you need literally 7+ headshots to kill ONE zombie if you were playing too well, which was so goddamn dumb. I think REmake 3 did away with this or at least revamped it, it never took more than a couple of shots to take down a zombie in that game.

Yea sometimes it took a lot. I didnt bother killing most of the zombies when i pkayed RE2R. I mostly disabled by knee capping and removing arms instead.

When it comes to Resident Evil I avoid the zombies rather than kill them in my first couple of runs. I go gun blazing when I know the game well enough.

I clapped almost every zombie in REmake 2 & 3. I know I have to backtrack so I don’t want that many surprises when I do. That and, you do have the resources. I was swimming in ammo in RE3 especially.

Also point blank shotgun blasts is too satisfying in those games.

GOAT Horror titles

Killer7
Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill
RE (PSX)
Zombi U

I started REmake but still need to finish it. My favorite line about RE from the younger generation…“It’s too easy to run out of ammo, and the zombie’s are bullet sponges”.

Silent Hill 2 is one of the GOAT’s.

You should be slapped for putting Zombi U there though. I played through the PS4 port, it’s a decent game but that’s about it.

From what I’ve played of RE7 so far, it does an excellent job of balancing resources. The game is fucking fun, and extremely well built and written. Graphics are amazing, great performance, great character. The game drips with creepy atmosphere, and the sound design is up there with the best.

My problem with it is that it’s not fun having to change my drawers every time I enter a new area :scream:

So I guess it’s more of me being a pussy than anything else :joy:

The game does its job. Extremely well.

I wonder would a modernized remake of Silent Hill 2 would work. I enjoyed watching my buddy play it back in the day (of course I’m still not buyin it, I’m too much of a beech ass neega to play that scary ass game :joy:)

I’ll like to see it if a Japanese team does it. If Konami farms it out to a western dev will would be a shitshow.

Wii U version was awesome, for what it was. I get uneasy playing these and the Game Pad usage was fun and added to the tension of going through inventory while the game is still going.

Game had some cool ideas, like the characters that die on you becoming part of the game, and a part of your friends game if they play online, when the online was up anyways.

I want to get to the Evil Within games but horror games aren’t really my jam.

I forget which section, but I remember we made my, at the time, roommates girlfriend play for us, lol. The soundtrack is legendary.

You are talking modern Konami… They would farm it off to whoever is the cheapest whether Western or Eastern.
