Video Game General 6.5: Now with more surprise mechanics

I think FF VII is overrated, but so is FF VI to some degree. And maybe FF IX? I finished that game once and never bothered to do any of the sidequests or anything.

FF VIII is underrated. I will always have a soft spot for that game no matter how many purists shit on it.

And people get WAAAAAY too harsh on FF Mystic Quest (which technically wasn’t a FF game to begin with?), hell, it was always marketed as an entry level RPG but people dump on it since they think it was supposed to be some full-fledged FF experience (or maybe because we got Mystic Quest instead of V who knows)

Yeah, it’s linear but I like the characters and the story.

FFV was victimized by a the lack of an official localization for long time. The first time I played it was back in 1998 on emulator with a fan translation. Actually I played three FF games that way. FF2, FF3, and FF5.

In my opinion, and I think that players that didn’t care for FFVII and FFVIII latched on to IX because it was more in line with the traditional games in the series. At the time it released I thought it was great but in retrospect I think it’s just a good game.

6 and 7 both are overrated, but 7 also gets way more hate than it deserves. 8 is better than it’s usually stated to be, but gets a lot of underground love. 9 is just amazing

it was known as Final Fantasy 2 in the west as Japan held off exporting 2 and 3.

The one where you start off as a Dark Knight who later class change to Paladin, There a Dragon Knight who your BFF/Rivial, the Cleric/Archer girl who you two have a love triangle with, there also the Summoner Girl who was lost and asume dead to only appear later as a full adult and a Hottie as she was in the fairly world where time moves faster, The Game mainly the plot to Star Wars but Vader is the Dark Knight/Paladin’s Brother and the Emperor tried to become god on the Moon.

Will always have a special place in my heart for FF IV as it showed me a more fleshed out plot in a JRPG than what I had seen so far and the characters were endearing, but the fake deaths and that weird plot twist in the end with the Lunarians kinda keep it down a notch. But still won’t say no to playing it again.

I love the part when you go underground and meet the Dwarves, those guys have their own underground Airships, Tanks and such, Rally-Ho!

FF VIII would be the worst in the series for me if XIII didn’t exist.

My favorite FF’s are

IV (Just a good fucking game. And Rydia is bae)

V (got me hooked on job class centric rpgs)

IX (probably my favorite FF. Everything about
it is wonderful)

X (Besides VivI, Wakka is my favorite FF character)

X-2 (best battle system and job class system of any FF. Don’t even at me)

XII-2: Revenant Wings (DS SRPG. Short but really fun)

That’s not in any order btw.

I don’t really like SRPG’s. I’m extremely picky about the ones I play. So FF Tactics never really clicked with me. I don’t think it’s a bad game though. The quality is 100% there. I just don’t like most SRPG battle systems.

I’d add tactics, tactics advanced and that list is perfect.

X-2 was too much fun and definitely agree that it has the best FF battle/job system.

:heart::heart::heart:

Ive only played 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 15. Loved em all, need to finish 15 tho so i can rank it.

7 introduced me to RPGs, I hated RPGs prior to it so its my favorite although technically the ones after are “better”

After Square is done with this boring ass VII remake, they need to do FFXVI set in Ivalice with the battle/job system from X-2. :triumph:

Edit: Forgot FFXII. Second best battle/job system.

Forget X-2 Job system, I want FF3 and FF5’s Job system

I liked everything about 12 BUT the battle system. Shit didnt even need you to play it lol

Yeah. I didn’t really like the Gambit system in XII. While I understand and appreciate why it was there I didn’t like the autopilot aspect. Also learning The ins-and-outs of it can be potentially overwhelming since there are soooo many options when building your parties Gambits.

At first I didn’t even like the battle system for XII cause I was still very new to ARPG’s and it came off very “MMO-ish” to me as well. Not to mention the battle system was like fucking molasses at times. It was really hard to adapt. But I ended up enjoying it.

Fran is bae tho. Her accent/dialect was soooo seductive. I loved it.

Panelo and Ashe are basic bitches

My first RPG was Dragon Quest (then Warrior) for NES. The chronicles of Spanky will forever be apart of my childhood.

After that I think I played some of the Phantasy Stars for GEN and Shining Force for Game Gear.

Though dragon quest cracked the door open for RPG’s I don’t think it was until 9 when RPG’s really got my attention. 9 fucking blew the door off of what I thought an RPG was and what they were capable of.

And I had played plenty of RPG’s before then but none of them really clicked until 9. Then I deep dived the genre and it became my favorite style of game. My favorite RPG’s genres are pretty much anything job class based or creature based.

Jade Cocoon for PSOne was my fucking jam.

Oh I have a fondness for Rogue-Lites too. I had Sega + all the attachments and a game gear until the PSOne era. Both of which were plentiful in Rogue-Lites.

You can say what you want about Panelo as no one cares about here, but leave Ashe alone.
The shit she went though, (Home country invaded, Husband and family killed on her wedding day) Ashe deserves some space.

Rule 63 Chewbacca.
