Video Game General 6.5: Now with more surprise mechanics

Yea a lot of why I was flat out done with the series after GOW II was the combat had become incredibly stale to me and that was the vast majority of the gameplay loop.

If older GoW combat became stale to you GoW2018 will put you to sleep. It’s not nearly as fun as it was in previous titles imo.

Now I’m worried if they bring Ninja Gaiden back, that they will reboot it/shoehorn ARPG elements to make it more “widely appealing” ALA Nioh or GoW2018.

You’re assuming Team Ninja is smart enough to make a new Ninja Gaiden at all

I felt the opposite. GoW 2018 seemed way less button mashy than previous installments. The moves and combos felt much more intentional and skill based to me.

I’d honestly have to play. Combat being slower paced isn’t a turn off to me. I like fast and slow combat. It just needs tp be engaging cpmbat that requires i think about the encounter. My problem with the first two GOWs is that stuff isn’t fun to fight. Combats really only fun when you and your enemies synergize on the field. If that doesn’t happen then you end up with boring combat imo. Kratos is really strong in GOW1&2 and not much in the game can compete with him and thus for me the combat became brain dead and dull.

I have the same issue with like DMC3. While it’s still very fun to play the actual combat, interaction of player and foe is very dull and I don’t find myself thinking about the combat, just what cool combo I can do next. That’s fun for a bit but gets dull eventually.

Opposite end of the spectrum is DMC1 & NGB. the synergy between the player and the enemies is damn near flawless in these two games and because of it still offer some of the most exciting combat in any action game. They are still engaging to play to this day because the combat itself has depth. Not just the player.

The bosses are pretty much the main attraction of DMC3 anyway, the regular enemies you face inbetween are just combo training fodder

DMC4 is better in that aspect

God of war II was use Ramage of the furies, Poseidon’s wrath and shit on everything. None of the previous titles were deep or difficult.

God of War 2018???

Yeah not even close. Superior and more fun combat.

I mean bosses better be your best engaments in an action game or else wtf are you doing? With that said if you seeing going to build interesting encounters between your highlight encounters then you need to go Treasure style and cut those engaments cuz they aren’t really adding to your game in a meaningful way.

The enemies you fight between the bosses should never be considered fodder. If they are then you are fucking up.

Yea normal enemies are deffinitly more fun to fight over all in DMC4 then 3. 5 tops em both in that regard thankfully. 1 still das bess doe imo.

The problem is that most of DMC3 you’re just facing different versions of those scythe-wielding demons, later/sometimes combining different ones in a single encounter. Even later in the missions the Chess Pieces are the only highlight I can remember. Legit had to take a look at the wiki to freshen up what obstacles the game threw at you while solving puzzles and inbetween the boss battles.

Oh I agree. Id have rather they combined some of the hells for larger move sets, don’t need 7 of them. We can flat out remove Abyss and Dullahans. I personally hate the chess pieces but a lot of people like them so they can stay I guess. Hell Vanguards should be used more.

Mmmm, maybe not too much. I think the original idea was just throwing them out a few times after Mission 2 as an indication of player’s power progression since at the start of the game you’re barely beating one of these guys and later demolishing them with all the skills and weaponry at your possession.

Buuuut they at least spice up battles due to their sheer size, since most enemies are barely taller than Dante himself

I think you’d enjoy GoW 2018. It’s basically the complete opposite of brain dead combat. I played it on Give Me a Challenge setting, which is the equivalent of Ultra Violence in DOOM, and it was hard as fuck, but not in a cheap way. It forced you to pay attention and learn the mechanics, and it was extremely rewarding once you got it down. WAY better combat experience than the earlier games, imo.

For example- even the weakest enemies in the game pose a real threat, and if you’re caught sleeping you WILL die.

Some friends of mine played it on Normal difficulty and they said it was no walk in the park, either.

Give me a Challenge mode was more fun than every god war title before 2018 combined. No contest, it was amazing.

Hell Vanguards should have been 3s Shadows or Blades imo. Not an every fight Mook but you should fight more then 3 of them over the course of the game.

They also have a pretty decent sized and unique move set making them relatively interesting to fight because you always have to pay attention.

First you had my curiosity. Now you have my attention.

Thanks, I hate it.

Wait a minute, when did God of War turn into Ninja Gaiden 2
