Video Game General 6.5: Now with more surprise mechanics

Star Ocean: First Departure is looking clean. Never played the first Star Ocean but I’ve heard some of the soundtrack. Dancin’ Sword is a banger. Let me guess, the game is a digital only, right?

When it comes to current gen consoles? Yes.
It’s last release and at the time only release outside of Japan was on PSP UMD.

If they do a physical release for PS4/Switch will likely be through Square Enix’s website

sheeeitttt, so I finally started with Ori & the Blind Forest while at work today… holy crap this game is gorgeous… the art style/design is award-winning stuff, imo. It’s a shame that it took me this long to finally get around to playing it.

Oh and Upper Echelon on point yet again about the shift away from ownership [that most gamers seem to foolishly be perfectly ok with]

Have you not played through Yakuza 0 yet? That game is chef’s kiss

Saw what you said about watching your ex play. I should catch up before replying.

But that game pretty much saved my life. You’re in for a treat

With the exception of indy titles (due to availability) I always go for the physical release.

Outside of Japan, yeah most likely digital only.

I just found out some former pornstars are now twitch streamers, like sasha grey. Randomly popped up on my twitch feed last night and she was playing Witcher 3.

Congrats man! Pink or blue?

Congrats

Would be pretty crazy to watch a pretty streamer and think “wish I could see her tits!” and then be like “oh, you really can??”

Kinda ruins the whole mystique.

I finished God of War 2018 yesterday, AKA Zelda of Diablo.

I enjoyed the game but I thought the combat and pacing took a HUGE step back compared to the older titles in the franchise.

+The graphics are amazing. The texture work across the board is great, the particle effects are great, character models look fantastic, the lighting, animations and colors are all awesome. Sony money was put to work well here, and just like God of War III was a looker back when it release(and still is) I think this game will hold up visually for a long time. It looked stunning 99% of the time, the ONLY time I thought the game looked bad is when you enter a certain enemy to get an eye. It’s like they didn’t bother to texture that area the same way they did the rest of the game.

+The story is a lot more intimate this time around, and I was pretty invested having played all of the previous titles. Pacing took a hit because of this though.

+The setpieces and scope of the game is typical God of War stuff. Bosses that don’t even fit onto the screen and the like.

-Kratos’ most signatures moves are tied to cooldowns. Not short cooldowns either, MMO/RTS style 30-90 seconds and up cooldowns. Ridiculous. You can get items that reduce the timers, though that comes at the cost of other stats.

-The backtracking. Jesus fucking christ the backtracking. You have to do it A LOT, and you’ll start to notice quickly when the game is hiding its load times. I went to some Elf realm, BBQ’d everyone there, and when it was done I had leave the giant ass area I was in and it took 15+ minutes where nothing happened, just so I could get back to the main temple area to hit a forced(hidden) loading screen on top of taking the 15+ minutes to get back. That’s just one of the many times it happened throughout the game.

-Artificial difficulty. Now since the game is an ARPG now(complete with a basic bitch skill tree, which works the same as upgrading your weapons in previous games. I don’t get this change at all) certain areas and enemies will BBQ you if you aren’t geared enough. So regardless of how good you are, if you go to an area you aren’t supposed to be early on, enemies will literally 2-shot you and they have insane health. So unless you want to spend 20-30 minutes doing fuck-all damage while worrying about getting two shot, you will need to go grind for better gear before you come back to X area.

-Zelda of Diablo. The game is more similar to a 3D Zelda with how the gameplay loop is. You’ll see areas and treasures you can’t get to at first, but you’ll unlock some power or you’ll get some key item to be able get where you need to go/get some treasures that you missed. You have to backtrack after you get these types of upgrades/key items. You have stats now, you can freeze and burn enemies now too. Your equipment even has sockets so you can put some jewelz in there for a slight stat boost. You can upgrade your gear, which might give you more socket slots for another jewel for another baby stat boost.

-Gameplay feels slower than previous entries. You deal with less enemies than you did before, probably due to the camera change(which was a step back to previous games.) You can see all the action at all times before, now you have to worry about arrows lighting up if you’re going to get hit in the back. Your son and “head” don’t shut the fuck up in combat because of this too, they will always yell something out on top of the BRIGHT RED ARROW INDICATORS letting you know damage is coming from behind you.

-Basic bitch climbing ALA Uncharted. You can’t fail at climbing in this game. In older games, you had to fight enemies while climbing and sometimes the environment itself. Not in this. You just hold the analog in the right direction, then you hit 0 when the prompt appears.

-No jumping. No platforming. No aerial-based combat at all, outside of super basic launchers. One of my favorite things was to do R1+Square in the air for that 360 move which would keep you airborne a bit in older titles. Now that exact move is tied to a fucking cooldown.

-Color coded enemies ALA DmC. Certain enemy types will not take any damage at all from certain weapons, so you’re forced to use specific types against them. It was lame in DmC and it’s lame here.

7/10 when previous titles were 8-8.5 material imo.

TLDR: They turned God of War into Zelda of Diablo. The story got better, the pacing got worse, the combat got worse, the camera change is shit, and with the success and ball washing of the game going forward the next game will play more like this title than previous entries which is a shame.

I honestly don’t think God of War combat in previous titles was all that great. Fun sure, but it wasn’t an epic masterpiece either.

Damage isn’t hard to come by and it’s easy to get skill cool downs to basically nothing. GoW 2018 combat was fluid, seamless and hella fun imo.
