Everyone hates the stoic loli mage, Lymle and cat girl, Mericle in 4 but they’re my favorite characters from that game. Battle system was really fun too. Faize is a bitch.
Second Story was amazing. It’s easily the best game of the series on all fronts. Outside of arguably Chisato there wasn’t a bad character. My favorites were Ashton, Leon and Precis though. Bowman is an honorable mention.
I only played First Departure once when I owned it on PSP so I don’t remember most of it. I remember thinking it was great though.
I really liked 3 until the revelation. After that it was all downhill for me. I still finished it but I disliked pretty much everything after the fact.
Whoever thought of that plot twist in star ocean 3 is a master class troll not only did it retroactively make everything that happened in the previous games not matter it ensured nothing in the future that happened would matter either.
star ocean v is like 25 hrs long for the main story and tends to go on sale for less than 20 a lot. the 3d star oceans all have decently entertaining battle systems so if you can get it cheap and don’t mind a shitty story go for it if you get a ps4 or 5.
now that i think about it square enix must see something in star ocean because every other tri ace series could tell a more interesting story at this point. valkyrie profile 3 still doesn’t exist and neither does a raidiata stories sequel even resonance of fate could prob tell a more interesting story.
I’m still holding out for this one. Radiata Stories was low key one of the best RPG’s of the PS2 era.
Ridiculously good world building for having such little ground to cover. Simplistically deep story. Pretty much every character was interesting in design, story and play style. The battle system was simplistic but had an amazing amount of variety due to the battle formation mechanics.
