Video Game General 6.5: Now with more surprise mechanics

Yup. They fleshed this out a bit more in DQIX: Sentinels of the Starry Sky.

I don’t really like it. One of my favorite things about DQ is how unique the party members are.

Still a great game tho.

Dang, I was gonna recommend you guys Grim Dawn since it was on sale on Steam for Halloween. It was 5 bucks for the base game, and like 30-35ish with the base game+all of the extra expansions+content.

It has pad support too, which I don’t think PoE or D3 have(did they ever patch in pad support for D3 on PC?)

Druid is such a unique and awesome character class man. He’s a melee class, caster and summoner all in one. :sunglasses:

With the artstyle the way it is I think a Necro is a safe bet on making it in. I’m a Barb main all day, though Druid is most likely going to be my secondary if they don’t put in Paladins or Assassin’s. Assassin’s have so, so much potential in a new game man…they’re melee/caster hybrids with a COMBO/CHARGE system. Shiiiiiiiiiieeeeeet. They’re a lot of fun to play and just like the Druid they have a unique playstyle, both of which I miss in newer ARPG’s.

Fuuuuuuuck…mad I missed out on that Grim Dawn deal.

I love DQ IX so much. I really wish they’d do another one like it for current or next gen. :sob:

Still salty they never localized X.

https://www.gog.com/game/grim_dawn It’s still on sale on GOG, though everything seems slightly more expensive there than it was on Steam.

Since I’m not supporting Blizzard, I won’t be playing Diablo 4.

Kojima is smug and indeed one of those kinds of artists but like his games, I do like his style. I don’t think he is a hack but peeps are free to believe what they like and buy what they want.

From everything I’ve read about Death Stranding so far it seems like it should have been called Fetch Quest: The Game. Sounds like a boring as fuck, pretentious, own-fart-sniffing hiking simulator. That dude sounds like a hack to me.

For the one dude out there besides me who cares about the delicious trainwreck that is Anthem: ANOTHER lead guy just left.

The last head of Anthem, Ben Irving, left just 3 months ago. And I think he was with the company a while too (I think 8 years).

What is it about that game that’s making vets hang it up?

Lmao but everyone jumps on me and I haven’t even called him a hack today. Repetitive, boring, convoluted and easy as fuck. Great game! :joy:

I call him a hack cause he tunnel visions so hard for his story/message that the actual game suffers.

Probably trying save a sinking ship that was sabotaged by a bad design.

Hopefully that flying portion of Anthem can be stripped and put to good use in something worthwhile.

I liked Anthem for about two weeks, but then it just became a chore. The gameplay was cool, but there was a lack of a real hook. You couldn’t try the loot out until you loaded into the weapon room (which took forever), and the drops kinda sucked. If they had taken some notes from Destiny and added more strikes and raids, and notes from Borderlands and added loot for days, the game could have been spectacular.

I look forward to this story and as your return to D4 if you get back into it. Running with you was good times and would be awesome to bring back the SRK clan.

Kinda wish Kojima would’ve just said Death Stranding is just a really weird ass hiking game, then maybe it’s looked at in a different light.

I’m still going to get it day one because the connectivity feature seems interesting (and has potential for a lot of weird meta comedy) but I’m not agonizing in hype like I was 30 hours ago.

Note on Kojima:
The writing for MGS4 and 5 fucking suck but it’s clear he didnt even want to continue the series past the first one. It’s the same reason post Freiza DBZ has so many plot holes, the money pushed him to make more. Since Death Stranding is a contained story I don’t think you will see the same flaws in the narrative.

How would market it? When the gameplay centers around you being a delivery guy it doesn’t sound compelling. The story and the weirdness of it are going to be it’s strong points.

The reception would’ve been a lot more positive. Anytime peeps said it looked a hiking simulator with little no combat white knights were quick to defend cause we’d see more at the full release.

Feel like expectations just ballooned cause Kojima was purposely vague on gameplay elements. It’s exactly how I thought it would be for better or worse. :man_shrugging:t4:

No doubt it’ll be an entertaining Let’s Play watch.

Metal Gear Solid is “Tactical Stealth Espionage”, well Death Stranding could’ve been coined as “Connected interdimensional Traversal” hahahaha

Or at the end of the TGS demo he should have said “thats the gameplay loop my niggas, it’s harder than it looks, and hopeully American users will abuse the game mechanics to troll the shit out of each other.”

I’m only posting this clip because the piano guy for the show decided to play a bit of Guile’s theme @ 3:50

I mean what are most fetch quests in games? It seems like he took some bits of what would have likely been Silent Hills, but expands into Kojima style weirdness minus the action you would expect a triple a game to feature.

He probably could have leaned more into horror but then again that would have just made people hype this as Silent Hills with the serial number filed off and made the hype worst. I say give it a shot if you want something very different from your average game.
