Video Game General 6.4: New Halo? What else?

Kinda surprised that Fantasy Strike will release tomorrow.
To bad that it releases the same day as Kill la Kill If.

This is the best idea I’ve heard in a long, long time. A Borderlands style co-op shooter with Overwatch heroes? Sign me the fuck up. They’ve already proven they can make fun PvE modes, and I think it’d be a much more interesting entry in the franchise as opposed to just a straight up Overwatch sequel. But I don’t expect these things from Jeff Kaplan honestly.

While we’re on the subject tho, Sigma’s hero powers and interactions are all compiled here.

Apparently Fire Emblems story has leaked. Be careful of spoilers everyone

Thanks for the heads up, I never understand why folk feel the need to spoil stuff. No YouTube for a while I guess they always drop spoilers in the thumbnail.

It’s mainly cause a lot of people are impatient or they want to know if the game is worth getting via engaging story. There’s a lot of reasons.

I read spoilers for wrestling all the time but some of the spoilers I read are taped or decided so far in advanced I typically forget about them by the time the actual event airs.

I cannot see myself enjoying this. Just seems like some of the best aspects of fighting games were intentionally removed. Artstyle is pretty fugly to me as well, honestly.

Why is martian posting on a new account?

Couldn’t be fucked to find the info for my main one. Maybe I’ll try again at some point, meh.

Welcome back Martian.

Catherine: Full Body’s demo is now available

I’m cautiously optimistic about Full Body. I’m going to wait a bit after release to decide if I’m going to get it or not. Sony has been on a censoring rampage as of late and if they try to heavily censor Catherine there’s no point in getting it, imo.

If that does happen I’ll be super sad because I had always wanted to play Catherine but never actually got around to doing it.

I’m surprised it isn’t called Catherine: Full Burka given Sony’s recent antics.

Just swap some words and phrases and this is pretty much Sony’s argument.

If they go with the stupidity of censoring as the rumors say, then it is gg for me, not gonna support soyfilled decisions.

So, in continuation of me clearing out the PS+ games…
Latest entry is Life is Strange. Oh boy, where do I even begin with this one

Dontnod were a rather small studio when they made this, so even despite being backed up by Square Enix as the publisher - it’s pretty clear they had a limited budget when making the game - the graphics are quite outdated (even for a 2015 release), the facial animations are very wonky, and since it’s a more cinematic experience - it’s 30fps (but the framerate is very unstable).

It’s episodic in nature and is another one of those ā€œyour choices matterā€ games, but I can at least say it’s better than whatever the fuck Telltale were pumping out year after year.

The main gimmick here is that the main character, a girl named Max, has mysteriously obtained the power to rewind time, and going through the game’s story pretty much revolves around that ability - you save people from accidents, use newly obtained information from dialogue, and so on. It’s a pretty interesting twist since you can interact with a certain character one way, but should you change your mind - you don’t need to restart a chapter or reload a checkpoint or live with the choice you’ve made - you can just rewind a couple of minutes back and explore different dialogue branches, which is honestly cool. The game notifies you when your action will affect the ongoing story (Until Dawn and Telltale’s games also do this), so you aren’t left to guess whether you fucked up or not. Personally I like it more than how Quantic Dream’s game handle it (as in they don’t tell you shit).

I do think, however, that the power Max gets at the beginning, and the power to change past itself kinda hurts the narrative. For example, in Episode 3, Max discovers that by focusing on a photo - she could travel years back, and alter the past to her liking. So if she can do that…well it kind of defeats the purpose of the story even taking place at all. It’s intriguing and at times can pull a few strings in terms of an emotional impact, sure, but… you can’t help but ask why even care if all your efforts can essentially be made in vain with a ā€œpress of a buttonā€ so to speak, even the game’s finale in Episode 5 is precisely that.

I also found some of the characters a bit inconsistent, the interaction with characters that aren’t a part of the main story is very limited and doesn’t really lead to anything, and I’m disappointed that the optional photos you can take over the course of episodes are nothing more than collectibles/achievements. They’re neat, sure, but ultimately feel completely unnecessary. At least it’s an easy Platinum, I guess

Speaking of episode 5… I’m not gonna spoil anything, but man this shit gets WILD. You can tell dontnod wanted to go all out with this one. My only criticism is that the twist at the end of Episode 4-beginning of Episode 5 felt that it…came out of nowhere? The game drops absolutely no hints about the reveal and IMO it’s just there for the shock value, though I guess it would otherwise be a bit too straightforward. I dunno, it could’ve been done better. If any of you guys played LIS Ep5 you know what I’m talking about already.

Also, in terms of the dialogue - I really hate that Life is Strange is among the ā€œthis is how real teenagers talkā€ titles out there. The way some of the characters talk is either fake as fuck or simply too stereotypical, with lots of slang usage, as if the devs spent too much time reading Ibran Dictionary. I don’t think a single videogame emulates this well and comes off as very pretentious to me.

But, regardless, I still think it’s a nice purchase and you definitely won’t clear the whole thing in an evening, especially with the replayability that is inherent to the genre. Experimenting with dialogue options is actually fun because it’s not just blatant ā€œI can be the nicest person everā€ or ā€œI’ll be a total dickhead to everyoneā€ which plagues Telltale’s games (yet the story still always leads you into the same direction regardless. If it weren’t for QTEs - most TT titles can basically be completed by putting the controller down and watching them as movies, since you’re on a timer during dialogues and you can just stay silent)
