Video Game General 6.4: New Halo? What else?

Aaaaaaand people are talking about how MK11 is grindy, obviously clearing the way for Microtransactions later after all the reviews have come in.

I feel I knew this was coming, but it still pisses me off. MK11 has commanded the most hype I’ve had for any video game in years, and they hamper the progression like this.

It’s all cosmetic though isn’t it? And like all micro transactions, completely optional.

Also, it was likely WB Games call to add micro’s, not Netherrealms. Since WB owns Netherrealm they can’t exactly tell them “no”.

So your anger is a little misguided, imo.

WB is honestly the worst with DLC/Microtransations. No one seems to call them out. It’s crazy. They are way worse than EA and Ubisoft.

Everytime I see Kronika,I keep thinking she’s an adult Tommy Pickles who transitioned to female.

Cosmetics is still a big part of the experience. It doesn’t get a pass from me.

Is it though? Do you really need that classic costume to enjoy the game more?

I come from Call of Duty land, so maybe I’m assuming the worst. Over there, shit always starts out as just cosmetic, but then they’re putting you through an ungodly grind for guns, charging for shit like reticles, and all around being assholes. Unless, of course, you cough up some dough. Maybe I’m off-base though.

But still, even if things got better, “it’s just cosmetic” isn’t a good excuse in this scenario. If I want those cool outfits, why do I have to either grind for hours for them or cough up digital currency just to have a better chance at them? Because that’s the way things seem to be now unless I’m mishearing things. It’s not “Koffin AB has this outfit” anymore. Koffin AB has a better chance of getting you a good outfit. Not the one you want though. So, why this way instead of a straight path to getting what you want? Because they’re doing this shit to get as much money as possible out of you. Classic loot box shit. They’re just waiting until the review cycle is over to throw up the option to buy their digital currency.

The game has character customization like Injustice 2. Taking your main and making them your own has huge appeal and can affect someone’s experience with the game. It’s why I don’t buy “it’s just cosmetic” bullshit. I also remember when stuff like that were standard unlockables.

It is more than just costumes though. As a lore person, I want to be able to get all the character intros.

I guess I’m old fashioned bc I used to like getting 1 or 2 full costumes fully assembled from the game.

I remember in MK9 they used to give classic costumes when releasing big patches for free.

The customization aspect in Injustice 2 seemed too long winded. You would get gear for characters you didn’t play and a lot of times you couldn’t equip stuff if your character wasn’t at a certain level.

I wish it was like Tekken 6-7 where you get general currency and could use it to buy items /clothing for whatever character you want.

That’s what pisses me off. It could very easily be like that, where you earn currency and buy what you want. But they want to nickel and dime you, so now you’re, in essence, gambling.

I mean it’s relative to the technology, but I remember fist feeling this in Mk9 where it hit me that I was “too old for this” with Noob’s wishbone fatality.

Thank the single player freaks and their relentless need for unlockables.

Keeping it 100, this wouldnt be the first game where customizable options are locked behind a grind. Tekken and SC are on the same wavelenght.

Not saying that I agree or disagrew with either decision, but its hard to shit entirely on NRS when they arent the only ones who have done that.

Yeah…no. Unlockable’s were always a thing. In the past greedy publishers had no way to monetize them. Now they do. The “dark era” of MK games (GC, PS2, and REAL XB1) featured a separate 3D adventure mode, a full versus fighting game, and a Krypt a crap to of unlockables. Unlockables that included characters, custom, lore, art, etc. Difference was there was no additional charge. It was apart of the whole game.

MK9 was my “really?” moment with the franchise as well.

I know there are folks out there who play fighting games single player, but that shit doesn’t make any sense to me.

Agreed, I like what they’re doing with basically every character except for Sonya. Makes the cast feel less cut and paste.

To be honest I still probably won’t play the game (I’ll buy it), but by basically all measures (so far) it seems like a great addition.

Edit: if anyone hasn’t seen the video from Sugarpunch Designs talking about the “de-sexualization” of the female characters, I think his opinion is accurate (after debating internally for a while).

Basically he’s saying it makes sense to not mix your real boner with your gore boner.

Some of us like the story… also the computer doesn’t always talk shit or can be toned down.

Shitty franchise that has only stayed relevant because of shitty gore fanservice tones down on sex fanservice to be taken more seriously.

What can you do?
