Video Game General 3.0 - You know what should come back? Pre-rendered backgrounds!

He never said those people couldn’t interested in those games, he said HE, HIMSELF, was not PERSONALLY interested in those things. If you are, then more power to you, but you’re putting words in his mouth because he never said anything like this. The only one coming off as having said something stupid right now is you bro. You’re smarter then this man, I know it to be true.

Good to see I’m not the only one Hecatom antagonizes for no good goddamn reason…

Dude, you’re in the wrong. Sit down.

I still have the raw PSD of that, in case you ever wanna update it for a new stick.

Atleast for soul sacrifice they got a really REALLY cool theme going on. Not a fan of the actual combat/combat options.

Dragon’s dogma took the good bits out of Monster hunter and other sources mainly because the team was comprised of DMC, monster hunter and RE devs and made a neat game. Was still a bit flawed but hey I love the result.

Unfortunately only Monster Hunter devs know how to get that Monster Hunter flavor just right. Obviously because they spent years churning out games and slowly improving the series with each release.

Thing is, Dragon’s Dogma never billed itself as a MH-like, or even tried to, it’s just that you could feel it from the way you fought larger monsters in those instances. Those battles are just one part of the equation that makes DD so awesome

Which is what I mean about taking something and making it your own. To go back to Souls those games are clearly inspired by Kings Field, but Miyazaki basically took Kings Field and made it his own thing, the DNA is there, but it’s not a rip off.

Exactly. I loved DD. not because it had a MH feel, but because it was a great game. Hell, as I played, I caught myself wishing MH did some things the way DD did. I liked how you could actually jump on a monster and attack it, as well as how you could encounter one at any time without warning. MH did end up doing all that, now that I think about it… Never made the connection until now because of how well each game does their own thing.

That reminds me–I started playing Soul Sacrifice Delta yet again in the past couple of days… and I still can’t get enough of it. I might actually do a new character or something because my character now has been quite overpowered for a long time now…then again there is the character-reset thing you can do which sets level back to the beginning; you can keep doing that over and over again while gaining stuff for it in the process (certain perks if I recall, like +15% on Beast magic or whatever—ah I remember now–the “heart sigils”. You get a new heart sigil each time you do this “rebirth” process.)

See, there is so much there…so many layers. Any single post would really just be scratching the surface of all the things that are going on in that game. For several reasons, it is firmly cemented as one of my favorite games of all time at this point. I wonder now if people still play online—it was a surprisingly smooth experience each time I went online with this back when it was still new. There were so many great battles against the various bosses to be had, and all with just random people. If any portable game deserves a console port/remake it’s definitely this game. I will be playing it yet again tomorrow on my breaks and lunch hour.

…I also just remembered that I never even got far in the Alice Maze…at least not solo. The difficulty on that gets to be quite ridiculous right away…and it’s interesting because you just never know what you will have to fight on that next floor…keep the stuff and points you earned and leave, or continue to that next 3 floors (you only get the option to leave every 3rd floor) for another thrilling battle with—something you might not be prepared for? Heh, I love that. I think the only constant is that “Alice” appears every 3rd or 6th floor if I recall… and sometimes there will be something else you have to fight at the same time…you just never know for sure, and your powers are limited…heh, the suspense is delicious.

We’re getting tangled in semantics which is getting off topic, and PA you still don’t understand me so let me make this as simple and clear as possible. I think I speak for most gamers when I say if I play a game I really like, then it’s likely I’ll want to play other games which have some of the core things the original game had, but executes those things in a different way while adding their own unique things to make it fresh.

The heart of the Souls series boils down to 3 things:

-All actions are commitments not something you can “cancel” out of so button mashing=death and you must learn enemy attack patterns to attack and defend intelligently, and even out of combat be as cautious

-Rich and ominous atmosphere, the setting has enough subtlety and detail to tell the story and it isn’t a happy one nor is everything explicitly spelled out

-RPG systems that make you think about your stats and items and what kind of build you want, being concious of what you have and what you will need in the future so your personal skill levels up as much as your character

it’s very popular now to label a game “souls like”, but 9/10 times games with that label have at least 1 or more likely 2 of the 3 core pillars so saying that term is just a more concise way of explaining the above. Like I said before the influence of the Souls series is as awesome as the Souls series itself, because the creators of the Souls series were expressing more than just a game they themselves enjoyed, they were showing off their philopshy on how games should treat the player as well as how a game should affect them and make them think. So to see that mentality being the driving force of other very different games allows us fans of Souls series continue to enjoy what we previously have, without playing the same game over and over.

And I never said anything was wrong with that. In fact, I agree with that. Are you even reading my posts, or are you just trying really hard to find a basis for argument?

Don’t be an idiot. I feel like I explained all this patiently, including quoting Wiz saying “Don’t be an idiot”.

Don’t abuse the flags. “Hey, WTF-Akuma-Haxx posted. Huh. I’ll WTF that.” == reasonable. “I will now WTF flag every one of this cat’s posts” and “Let’s all flag bomb somebody!” == unreasonable and will get you jailed/infracted.

I will remind your dumb ass that Wiz didn’t say be nice and give them a cheery warning, he said to ban people that do this - as you did - for a week. Don’t be an idiot. Enjoy your slap on the wrist. <3

viiiiiiiiiva las vegas

When you speak the kind of truth than myself you will always have someone who antagonizes you.
You and me are very alike.

That’s not even the problem. The problem is when people take pieces of one game, pieces of another, then add nothing substantial to them or even improve upon them in a very significant manner. Which is why Lords of the Fallen was a mediocre game instead of a great one.

I personally do NOT want more of a thing just for the sake of having more of it. I want more of it at that level of quality or at least by a team that really, deeply, truly understands what makes the precursor so great.

That’s why I still think Bayonetta is superior to DMC3(or 4) as a successor to DMC1. But both Bayo and DMC3/4 are still very different and massive evolutions on the gameplay of DMC1, it’s just that the former truly understood what made it great(which makes sense since he made it too), while the latter takes it in very different direction. It’s not a bad direction, but it’s not the same and it actually loses what made DMC1 so awesome to become something else entirely. Granted, unlike Lords of the Fallen, because it simply changes directions instead of riffing on the previous games, it’s still a good game, just for different reasons.

@Saitsu, @crotchpuncha,

I just saw this, and now I’m mad.

Imagine the rage if I’d beaten Shiva EX(my favorite summon) and had THAT pop up on my screen… Damn Square and their references.

FFXIV has SOOOOO many pop culture reference it’s crazy.

My favorite is still “Ifrit bleeds we can kill it.”

That “Let it go” on tho is climbin up the list fast just because I know the effect it had on you mwahahahaha.

Right after I posted a link about a game that claims to be similar to the souls series yet very different at the same time which is what caught my eye about it in the first place you said you’re tired of games described as “like souls” obviously referring to the game I linked. You asked what is the point of playing a game likenSouls over an actual Souls game…well in the case of The Surge potentially it’s the jetpack, exo suit, and overall sci fi cybernetic stuff it claims to have that Souls clearly lack. Taking the article at face value some of The Surge’s selling point seems to be based on its similarities to Souls/LotF, but the new stuff seems to be just as big if not a bigger selling point while your post was basically saying “I’m not interested in that game because it sounds like a souls clone” when.

Anyways, if Lords of the Fallen is just a Souls ripoff ill be disappointed it was marketed as a more “arcadey” Souls that encouraged fast combat and timed combos, oh well I don’t care about it too much too many other games to prioritize over a small curiosity.

You really this butthurt because he’s not as excited as you are for your stupid game?

Then it’s a simple misunderstanding. To be honest, it was just the first thought that came into my head. Didn’t think it’d blow up like it did, or I would’ve clarified more. Eh, hindsight is 20/20, right?

My only issue is when a game is marketed as “like Souls” and nothing more. If all you can tell me when I ask about a game is that it’s like another one, then I’m not interested. It has to improve on the formula and/or reimagine it to garner my interest. Note, I’m speaking in general terms and not specifically about the game you posted. I just get tired of hearing “Souls-like” all the time because it sounds as if everyone and their mother is trying to cash in on the popularity of a great series. There was a game posted about on that same page in which that description was used. It looked like one of the positive ones, though.

Oh yeah, because two Wolfenstein games, Doom, Dishonered, Rage, and Quake were all just terrible, unplayable messes…

Are fucking serious right now?

You really going to tell me you don’t know the difference between games actually developed by Bethesda, and games developed by other houses owned by Bethesda? Bethesda did not make DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein, Dishonored, and RAGE. They produced them.

Does this mean Sega is an amazing developer because Bayonetta, Vanquish, Anarchy Reigns, and MadWorld are their resume?

Are you fucking kidding me right now? Get the fuck out of my face with this bullshit.
