Off topic from the current trend in the thread, but I need to rant a bit.
I don’t get how there is a backlash against the recent trend for nostalgic and retro games.
That there people getting angry and even offended that people are acquiring old consoles or clones of those consoles (even a few who turn to emulation) to replay games of the past.
The whole thing that made me aware (or more so) of the backlash was comments on the IGN’s Analogue NT unboxing video on You Tube. One commentator (yeah I say commentator to put it politely) is screaming how its all a violation of copyright law (lol wut) and Nintendo going to sue. Despite hardware is not covered by copyright law, that is patent law a completely separate area in IP. Nintendo’s patent for the NES and Famicom expired long ago, and only had a life of 15 years (and 30 passed by). Despite that the anger that brews in that guy rivals anything myself or Po, spouting examples that has nothing to do with video gaming. Don’t get upset if someone wants to fix up their old consoles for use. There also been some minor out cry against spiritual remakes like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Yooka-Laylee and Mighty No 9 (yes I know people don’t like how Might No 9 is being handled and shitty community management).
I know there many other examples, everything from elitist wanting to keep their hobbies to themselves (and not get mainstream) to those who ether attack out of ignorance or annoyance.
If you don’t like Retro games fine, don’t pay attention, don’t play them. If you do but can’t afford a retro console and get mad at others? Check yourself, get a job and save up on some cash. Maybe you shouldn’t sold off your old consoles years ago. I know Hindsight is 20/20 but don’t get mad at those who still have working video games from the 80s and 90s.
Maybe I am reading too much into it and I need to cool off with some old school game play.
I’ll give ESPN credit for not crapping all over EVO or FGs or anything. Just made fun of what happened, as they probably should. I mean, JWong has been reliving Evo Moment #37 for basically a decade to the point that Capcom keeps reminding everyone about it within their games.
But other than that, they did shout out how big EVO was and were congratulatory to Ogawa. The only down things were mispronouncing Washige (which let’s be honest…most of us probably have) and not actually mentioning Guilty Gear Xrd by name which I’m not going to harp on.
I don’t even know why ESPN covers professional game tournaments (I personally don’t care about the title of eSports).
Most people who watch a tournament while it live stream from Twitch or some other service. I don’t see the typical FGC or Star Craft fan really giving two shits about ESPN and I don’t see Jocks caring about eSports.
But I can go a life time with out ESPN’s own Colin Cowherd or Robert Flores slamming esports (and their own network) with their ignorant comments. http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/04/colin-cowherd-eviscerates-espn-for-televising-esports
Yeah it’s cool to see it in the mainstream media now, but I don’t think ESPN is the way to go. I see it as ESPN must be really desperate for more programming or their is money exchanging hands here.
ESPN is probably covering just due to the word of mouth and (somewhat) buzz. Better to start on it now, than just before it truly explodes to DOTA levels, if it ever happens.
Because they feel like it? Is there ever a reason to do something other than that?
But obviously it’s a slow news day. It’s going to be slow for a long while now until the NFL starts Training Camp. NBA is done, MLB is slowly starting back up from the break but it’s always slow right after the break, not even Hockey really. You know it’s bad when the top news story of the day is talking about NBA Summer League.
Downside of a 24/7 Sports Channel…there will be plenty of days where absolutely NOTHING is happening.
I am actually sure the Heroes of the Storm Tournament coverage happened because Blizzard paid ESPN. Nothing wrong with that per say, I would never imagine it happening 5 years go.
I guess covering late night poker tournaments open the doors to other areas.
Sports Illustrated had a similar dilemma, its how the whole swim suit issue got started.
I did not give Super Metroid the treatment it deserves.
It got better once I spent more time with it, going through the game rather than trying to bomb every square inch of the place to find every secret I can before actually continuing on. (Hunting for secrets isn’t a negative point against the game, I just think I was going about it the wrong way.)
Some of my issues are still there, but that’s less on Super Metroid and more on myself, as 2D platformers still aren’t my preferred style of game.
Final Personal Score: 7/10
Final Score if I didn’t have taste cancer: 9/10 (still a bit too easy and I felt that the bosses were “meh”)
Please forgive my blasphemy. A prime example of why people should finish games before reviewing them.
