Seeing people say they like Odin sphere just baffles me. The combat was shit, I don’t agree with orochizoo but the guy is right. It was WAY too simple, like it was made in the early 90’s/late 80’s from a gameplay point of view. If you like this you seriously suck.
For the record I’ve been saying for years that repetitive, simple, 80’s/90’s style of game play is good or bad depending on your tastes.
I haven’t played Odin Sphere since it came out which was like 07? damn I feel old lol, but I remember being so hype for it because at the time I was working at gamestop and it’s art made it stand out from every other game at the store. Then I got home expecting an intense action game like Muramasa and instead I got a limited action game that forces you to stop fighting frequently and half assed boring RPG mechanics. I remember there was some bar that depleted whenever you’re in combat, and when it runs out your character can’t move at all that just really killed all the momentum and fun of the game for me, it’s like a really shitty extreme version of the stamina bar from the Souls series. Maybe I’ll give it another try on PSV, but probably not.
Bullshit detected. Odin sphere released 2 years before muramasa, and if you haven’t played it since release how could you expect it to play like something that wasn’t even out yet?
Finished Ace Attorney last night. Enjoyed the fuck outta it. Loved the dialog, the way characters formed bonds (like you getting along with ppl like Maya, Miles and etc), the music was very fitting, pursuit and the OBJECTION theme would make me sit up every time lol. Gonna take a few days break before getting into Justice for all
I will! After i beat the trilogy im gonna get Miles´ game and Apollo justice. Im really liking this series. Also now i can genuinely be hype about Phoenix and Maya in Project X Zone 2
I really need to get the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy for the 3DS, I would bitch about it being a Download only instead of having a retail version
but I can’t complain as my NEW 3DS XL (2015) has a 32 GB MicroSD card.
Agreed, It isn’t a bad game per say. But you have to be open minded, you have to have a taste for some of the slower pace and more stat minded RPGs and games with alot of story cut scenes.
Like how visual novel genre isn’t for everyone. There are some I admit I do enjoy despite my criticism of the genre as they relate to video games.
I liked Odin Sphere. I think the game is quite good, I like the POW meter and the way you can’t do anything when it runs dry. You thought Souls punished you for mismanaging your stamina. HA!
Each character has a unique way of playing (Cornelius da bess!) and their own selection of skills. They all have their own narratives that weave in and out of each other in a really well done way. The writing is wonderful imo.
Game’s gorgeous and has wonderful music and voice work.
I’ve played through the game a few times now and it’s just a really relaxing, yet also challenging game. I think the only thing I genuinely don’t like about it is that is can be kind of grindy, especially if you are trying to power everyone up enough to go for the real ending. Normally this is a pretty big deal breaker for me, very few games do I actually like to grind in like FFT, can grind for hours in that game, just buildin my little army, makin everyone some kind of OP specialist or something, but I digress. In this game i think grinding is kind of fun. I like that lvling up HP requires you eat food, and that there are restaurants you can take ingredients to and they will make you special meals that will give you massive HP lvl gains. I like that you need special currency to buy some of these dishes. I like that needing to perform well in specific zones (speed and no damage) is required in order gain the mats and special currency needed to buy those special meals.
I like that the alchemy system is pretty robust (26 recipes) and that your incentivized to take advantage of the system not just for the special potions that are actually quite useful, but because if you do it right, you get an ass load of Phazons which you can use to grow plants in order to make mats, or can use to power up your weapons or Mana.
I really like it’s inventory system, being organized has real benefits in gameplay.
It’s not perfect tho. Mercedes is boring as fuck to play. I hope she gets a lot of attention in this Expansion/Rerelease they are doing. Oswald is really fun to play as, but his special tech drains the POW meter so fast that it can be really hard to use sometimes. It does tons of damage, but it’s so easy to screw yourself over with it it. If I where them I’d ton the damage output down a bit, and slow the POW meter drain on it so it’s more manageable. Or cop out and give him a “DT” Meter or something. Characters in general could benefit from a bigger move list which looks to be a main feature for the expansion, right on Vanillaware.
I dunno, it’s an interesting game that does a lot of stuff that other games don’t do, or don’t do in as interesting a way. It’s not for everyone, it’s a quirky kind of game, but it’s also one of the game i feel defines what made the PS2/Cube/Xbox generation so great. There was an ass load of interesting, weird, quirky fun games being made then, people tryin new stuff still. The PS3/360 part of the generation is defined by playing it safe with only a few examples of real risky or quirky ideas.
When it comes to Vanillaware games so far i think their only true failure is Grim Grimoire. It has, as usual, wonderful writing and great characters and a great story, but holy shit it’s a pain in the ass to play. A side scrolling RTS with big sprites, not enough view space, and then trying to do that kind of game with a controller. Yea no. Every fight in the game turns into a giant mess, you can’t see shit. Don’t buy this unless you’re a collector or something, it’s not a good game.
Thing is Odin Sphere is a pretty even split of action and RPG. Making and using items and leveling up is just as important as the actual combat.
That said, the systems certainly had faults and it’s not the best game I’ve ever played, but it was still good and fun, and adding the incredible art, story, and voice acting on top of that it was an unforgettable experience
For the detractors of the combat system, you should take note they are not just adding new attacks but actually changing the combat system(as well as improving the RPG system aspects). They have even said it should feel more like Muramasa and Dragon’s Crown now, and DC in particular was extremely crisp in it’s gameplay so I have complete faith t his will be a vastly improved version gameplay wise
Still, the game is definitely more for people that value the “video” side of “video games” equally to the actual “game” part. If you only care about gameplay, I doubt even the new version will sway you
