Video Game General 2.0: Yo Dawg I Heard You Like Remasters And Ports

some PS1 games still look great, MGS1 is still a great looking game, FFIX is still a great looking game.

Also I dunno what you are trying to say with the hipster comment that is why I am mocking it. The last few years accusing something of being “hipster” has become short hand for “I dont like this because reasons I dont actually have.”

Yea, they look ok for what they are. However, that look isn’t something I’d ever think people would prefer. Like, would anyone prefer it if MGS4 looked like MGS1? What about if FFXIII looked like FFIX?

I called it “hipster shit” because it comes off to me as something that’s being done just to be different with no practical purpose. Whether I like or dislike it is irrelevant. In fact, I don’t even like the 8-bit pixel stuff, but I see the appeal.

I don’t like it because its ugly as shit.

At least some of that 8 and 16-bit retro crap LOOKS like the things they are supposed to be instead of a blurry, jaggy mess of LEGOs…

EDIT: LOL at niggas flagging me for saying “Fuck Geoff Keighley”… What has happened to all my fellow gamers?

It would be awesome if developers took more games from the past and updated the graphics. I’m still waiting for a Road Rash/Super Hang on/Cruis’n game that the core mechanics stayed the same but everything is up to drive club/horizon 2 graphics. Road Redemption was supposed to be a successor to the RR games, but missed the mark due to not sticking with how the original games played. To me, it looked like a GTA Lost and Damned racer with the mechanics and going beyond melee.

No I wouldn’t want MGS4 to look like MGS1 because it’s not supposed to look like MGS1, it’s supposed to look like MGS4, but I wouldn’t out right write off a new MGS game that looked like MGS1. MGS1 has shit loads of atmosphere and mood, the way it looks helps enhance it’s dirty gritty atmosphere.

No one wants to play FFXIII so that’s not a very good example, but no one had a problem with FFIII, IV, and V remakes that looked like PS1 games back on the DS. Yea yea “But that’s a DS!” big fucking deal, that’s what those games look like and they look good. That’s my point.

As for it being done to look different, well no shit, that why almost anything looks the way it does. You think Okami is cell shaded because it’s practical? No it was an artistic choice, same as that horror game up above. Okami had a realistic art style in the beginning but they changed it because they wanted to. They don’t need a practical reason for their creation to look the way it does, they only need to want it to look that way.

You’re telling me that screen shot doesn’t look like a person standing in front of a desk looking out a window?

As for “what happened to your fellow gamers” I have a feeling you’re getting flagged because at this point “Fuck this, fuck that, fuck you, fuck that person, fuck that company, fuck that game, fuck that art style” legit qualifies as spam at this point. You are spamming you’re gimmick, and as I have said countless times before, people are tired of it. That is probably why you are getting flagged, and where all you’re fellow gamers have gone.

You’re no fun to talk to, you’re no fun to have around anymore, you’re a negative Nancy who shits on everything people like that doesn’t line up with you’re extremely narrow minded view of what qualifies as a game, or a worth while product or whatever and you use extreme types of hyperbole to get your viewpoint across.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with nostalgia and if they do want to recreate that flickering for some reason, as long as they do it well there isn’t really much a problem with it. Tarantino movies are fueled with nostalgia, endless call backs, stylings, and blatant recreations, yet they are some of the best movies made in recent years. Nostalgia isn’t the problem, it’s whether or not it’s done well.

That may be true, to an extent, but the creators have a choice in making how their games look. Actual artwork plays a big role.

I’d use these Doom pics as an example:

[details=Spoiler]

[/details] The graphics was technologically advanced for the time. Nonetheless, work was put into everything that you see. Drawn, or captured in digitalized form from real life models(for instance the weapons were toy guns.)

Today it’s a matter of taste and what someone wants to achieve.

Ignoring the current topic, MKX streams all abound starting at midnight.

Not really and i myself just played thru the game and still enjoyed it. They hate anything that seems to give an edge or is new tech. Heaven forbid you try to explain why daigo spams fireballs or just frames in Tekken or even a FADC in SF. They get all ruffled and bitch about something. Thats why i dont hang with them that much due to such a set in stone mentality about stuff.

PA showing his age, as are the rest of us here  And yeah +1, cosign, and all of that to CP’s posts.

PA may think this style looks ugly, but I welcome low poly indie art also I took the text from the developer’s website and put it through google translate, obviously it’s not perfect, but you get the idea why the game looks this way if the fucking title wasn’t a dead give away:

"Hello, everyone. I am a personal game developer living in Tokyo.

Do you like “retro graphics game”?

Recently from indie game to Sumahoapuri of large companies, I retro touch game has the world out in a variety of ways.

However it is a “dot picture retro game” of NES-SNES.

Approximately 15-20 years ago, I spent a period as a game boy in the generation of PlayStation and Sega Saturn.

Game of the original experience for me just this time.

Image of polygon first generation machine, but rough around the edges in the amount of information is small, there was excitement and innovative experience that can be freely adventure the 3D space.

Might a little fast mind to call the “retro game”, what not think fondly “That video” is for the generation of per now working people-digit people eyes.

And, in 2015 currently. Dot painting style games and Demeiku is epidemic, a lot of great games have been released.
such I, but know why PlayStation, it does not come only Sega Saturn system of revival.

Indie and I had thought I would come of them in the game, but Domo wait wait Domo, picture making games that are expected did not come out.
(Far “NINTENDO 64” or wind action games, arcade initial style racing games have been announced.)

That is why …, Itcho or try to make your own! It is up to you launched this title I think.

Because this video is really early development version, to I want to now graphic also cause more is more “detune”,

Production of non-graphics, packaging, and we think you wanna go stuck to “platform”.

Game content, aims to mystery adventure that does not so much to the horror closer.

20 in the second half to 30-something middle of the original game pin point to kids of everyone. I will deliver a game that “that exciting feeling” revives.

Please stay tuned."

@BBQ read this M2 made a lot of really awesome changes: http://blogs.sega.com/2013/11/27/sega-3d-classics-–-3d-super-hang-on-interview-with-developer-m2/

We’re talking about style preference. It doesn’t matter what it’s supposed to look like. All that matters is what people want it to look like. My point is, if given the choice, no one is choosing to have a game look like a PS1-era game over anything else.

Again, we’re talking about style preference. It doesn’t matter if you want to play FFXIII. The DS FF remakes had graphical improvements. So did the PSP ports. The games were upgraded within the limits of the consoles. Do you think FFIV would’ve looked like that if they chose to remake it for PS3 instead of NDS? Hell no.

Cell-shading is a style. Making a current generation game look like a PS1 game is NOT a style. There’s no “artistic choice” in doing that… You’re just emulating the results of the graphical limitations of that era for God knows what reason.

Still, my question remains… “Why?”

They did the best they could with Doom. Using it as an example doesn’t really say much because it’s actually from that era. They didn’t have the ability to make it look better and choose that look anyway.

It always come down to age with you… Acting like I didn’t have a PS1.

I guess whatever you translated answers my question, but I really can’t understand what they’re trying to say.

And PA and whoever else can dislike low poly art, but Drift Stage is one of the most fucking beautiful art styles I’ve possibly ever seen in a game and IMO showcases what the style can look like at it’s best:

No we are talking about creator choices and all that really matters is what the creators want it to look like.

You actually have no point because someone has clearly chosen to make their game look like a PS1 game over anything else completely refuting your whole stance. You point was refuted before you had even tried to voice it. Cell shading is a style, and choosing to make your game looks like a PS1 game when it doesn’t have to makes that now a style. It’s like saying making your movie in black and white when color is an option isn’t a stylistic choice when it very clearly is.

Because they wanted to. They don’t need another reason. Welcome to art. If they have other reasons you’re welcome to try and fish it out of that google translate up there, but when it REALLY comes down to it, the only reason they need is because they wanted to.

MK1 graphics > MKX graphics

Yea I said it!

There’s one indie game that uses 16-bit graphics. Most of them use pre-8-bit graphics. I like the early 3D graphics.

Model 2 and Model 3 forever!

The GOAT, until the Tecmo fiasco and now it’s taking this dude years to release a game originally for PS3/360 on Wii U.

Devil’s Third has me the most curious to see how its shaped up. Last year’s reveal was B. A. D.

i hope that game does well. Really wanna see Itagaki back in the game with this new studio of his.

I want to like it so hard…

This. I thought I’d never tire of engaging Po, or trying to make him see how ridiculous and annoying his cynical, despondent and hypocritical worldview was. But then, I did get tired…very tired. If every console on the market was a 3DS, with every game released either being Zelda or something Platinum…errr CLOVER, that nigga would still bitch about the “state of the industry”. For motherfuck sake. If I bitched that much about ANY ONE THING, I would NOT TAKE PART IN THAT THING. Who knows, maybe it’s depression or some shit. There needs to be an intervention. Someone get that nigga on a treadmill. Wouldn’t be difficult, just dangle fake concept art for a new MegamanX game on the WiiU and that fool would run until his feet fell off.

Graphics are hit and miss, but the actual game play and customization and sheer ridiculousness of it all makes it look fun like Platinum Games take on a third person military shooter, I’m going to cop it, not day 1, but within a few months of release most likely.

This looks bad to you? kanye shrugs I totally see Ninja Gaiden fused with COD and some Gears of War influence:
