Video Game General 2.0: Yo Dawg I Heard You Like Remasters And Ports

Now THIS is game design philosophy I can understand. I’ve been in the process of writing up a design doc for a fighting game idea I came up with, and I have most of the cast and their characterizations fleshed out already… The playstyles and moves are a little more difficult to put together due to not wanting to completely retread already broken ground, but the animations and movesets will definitely play off the characters’ personalities.

That is story-based design that makes sense to me, rather than trying to emulate an average Hollywood movie with little to no actual gameplay philosophy or discipline.

That is what draws my ire.

@Po she wasn’t just the writer, but the director so I’m pretty sure she was heavily involved in the actual game play too lol.

@crotchpuncha‌ When the writer/director of one of modern gaming’s best franchises leaves said franchise to work at a substantially smaller, yet arguably more talented developer and for a Star Wars game, it’s kind of hard to not care. By your logic you wouldn’t care if Itsuno left Capcommto joinn Platinum Games tomwork on a Spiderman game (or whatever popular liscence you like). Apparently you’re saying its dumb to want information on a project I’m anticipating, yup so remember that every time you look up info on Bayonetta 2 lol.

The games on the 3DS were pretty well received so this is nice.

That’s really not what I said Zoo. I said I’m waiting for more information before I start ranting about whatever it is she’s done. It’s perfectly fine for you to want more information about the situation, I never said it wasn’t. My “Stop giving a fuck” comment was related to the way other people behave. You keep trying to make a point about people on SRK, but half the time it falls flat because those people have reasons for their positions, so just stop giving a fuck about why they don’t like some shit you do like or whatever.

I never said anything about not caring about projects directors/writers/studios in general are behind. That would be dumb. This is kind of what I’m talkin about. You’re so quick to try and jump on my ass for something I said that you completely missed what I actually said dude, and then you’re so fucking smug about it you come off like a total dick head.

I wouldn’t argue that ol’ "walk forward slowly in the desert to activate this cutscene" and ***“Set-piece: The Game”***, aka Uncharted is one of “gaming’s best franchises” lol but I guess that’s what opinions are for.

The same reason I don’t give two shits about Uncharted would account for me not knowing Ms. Hennig was also director of the Hollywood Movie Game, er, Uncharted series, so I could see how someone who likes that series would follow the exploits of the director, much like how Hideki Kamiya pretty much has me on auto-buy whenever he’s attached to something, so I’ll give you that.

But “Uncharted is one of modern gaming’s best franchises” though…
Everything I said about modern gaming, right there in one neat, auto-playing package right there… I damn near busted out a Joker gif when I read that… You are too funny, Zoo.

Uncharted doesn’t Auto play itself, I really wish you would stop saying that because it’s it’s not fucking true, in fact it’s flat out false. I’ve played all 3 of them and they all required my input for extended lengths of time. Look it’s fine for you to not like the Big Set Piece design of whats popular in games right now, or the way the platforming mechanics work, but Uncharted is a 3rd Person Shooter primarily, with platforming and navigation elements, and big set pieces. It’s fine if that isn’t your kind of thing, and I agree that I don’t think that kind of thing should become some kind of staple, but then I don’t think any kind of game should become a staple. While I want more of it, I don’t want to be flooded with Bayonetta type action games even if they where all of the same quality as Bayonetta. I don’t want that to become the main stream game, because just like with the big set piece games you get tired of it and it stops being fun.

Uncharted is REALLY good at being a bombastic, thrill ride action game. I’m sorry Po but it’s just true. You denials about the quality of the game and claims that it auto plays itself are as silly as the claims that it’s the greatest shit since slice bread. It’s just a good game series with it’s own flaws and high points, just like any other game.

Edit: Also the real reason I wish you would stop with that line is that trolls like Sennin are picking up on it and sayin it to. It’s spreading like some kind of herpes virus :bluu:

Hey I don’t want every game to be a Bayonetta type affair anymore than I want to drown in a sea of shooters and Heavy Rain-type “experiences”… There’s room for all of that, or at least there used to be…

The balance is all fucked up, and no one can afford to take any risks because these developers are spending the New York Yankees’ combined player salary to make sub-par, samey feeling games. So yeah, I go in on set-piece, experience driven games because I find that stuff mad boring, but its whatever.

I’m still going to make fun of Uncharted though… They spent more money on voice actors and mo-cap than they did on their programmers… Think about that for a second.

Well that’s what happens when you become a programmer. All programmers are paid dog dick whether they make games or build huge digital infrastructures. If they wanted to make huge amounts of money they should have become actors. I know what you’re saying with that line but that’s the nature of the beast.

I’ll always have a a preference toward third person games over first person because when done right they retain their inherent arcade fun, while having just as much immersion and world building as any first person game. I like first person games too, but the perspective just isn’t as satisfying movement wise, it’s very hard to make an FPS for example that doesn’t feel like your stuck in quicksand, I guess the visual fluidity of watching your character 's full body in motion just adds a lot more than seeing two arms poke out in front.

As for big set piece moments there really is no game that involves killing stuff that can’t benefit from a few of them, they are intended to heighten the wow factor set by the game play, like the drop at the top of a roller coaster and Uncharted handles it well. A lot of other games don’t, and just scream "hey look at how much money we spent on this game’s graphics assets!!!

Yea I think the Uncharted series balances the big set piece shit really well. Games like COD series throw em at you like candy dispensers they stop having the impact they are supposed to have, but in Uncharted that shit still usually has you on the edge of your seat. Even P* knows the value of a good dramatic set piece, Vanquish and Bayonetta got some really killer big set pieces. I mean really fighting Jeanne while riding on a rocket is more of a hassle then anything, but fuck if it isn’t bad ass.

Almost every Contra game is just a billion playable set pieces mashed together lol.

lol well in Contra death is always right around the corner so that crazy shit always got your butt cheeks clenched tight. Hard Corps on Genesis man…It’s just one crazy fuckin thing after another. Game wears me the fuck out lol.

But you’re still pushing buttons and making those set pieces happen instead of listening to Nolan North ham it up.

Riding on missles while shooting everything in sight is a hell of lot more engaging than walking slowly down a hallway, impervious to damage, until you get to the next set piece*(that shit seriously needs to go away… looking square at you, Call of Duty…)*

The only thing i did to make that set piece happen was getting Jeanne’s health low enough to activate a QTE missile throwing match, then they jumped onto the missile all by themselves. I didn’t do that, game took over at that point and moved us onto the next battle arena. Same as when the building fell over leading to the fight on the side of another building (When the camera pans out you no longer take or give damage, you could put the controller down at this point and nothing would change between then and when you land on the side of the building), or them jumping off the missiles and onto the fountain court yard. It’s either a QTE or the game does it for you.

A couple of times Uncharted has those walking moments to deliver some narrative info, of introduce a new location, but they are pretty far and few between, and the games rarely actually take the control away from you. Even in Uncharted 2 when the whole fucking building is falling over you’re still in full control, and dudes are shooting at you and you can shoot back, or punch em in the face or some shit.

Not that I wanna agree with po but uncharted does basically play itself. The levels are deigned around a central set piece and everything from the platforming, combat and even shooting mechanics are fairly auto-correct in function.

I still enjoy the series but I consider it more of a interactive movie then a true gaming experience.

If it plays itself then why do I die so much?

I want a new Contra more than almost anything else, with the indie game revolution you’d think there’d be a ton of Contra clones…but nope in fact the only ones I can think of are Bro Force and Super Time Force, both which look amazing, but probably won’t scratch the Contra itch.

Hard Corps: Uprising was GDLK, but it was definitely missing some of the magic of the other entires, I think it was how closely it aped the other Contras level design without flowing together well. The anime art style wasn’t bad, but definitely a step down from the traditional gritty/colorful look and the hand drawn sprites over CG backgrounds was jarring.

Contra: Hard Corps was my favorite because it was basically Minibosses: The game, but Contra 4 is probably now my favorite the use of dual screens to make it more difficult was brilliant.

I need to give 4 a try at some point (Love Wayforward) but I have a feeling the gap between the screens will drive me nuts. I’ve honestly not liked very many of the DS games where the play field is shared between the two screens. I didn’t really get into TWEWY, Nano Assault was annoying due to the gap in the screen. Not writing it off or anything, just sayin.

How the fuck does Zoo still continue to surprise me with his taste cancer? I actually like Uncharted, but really?

Contra 4 is one of the best games in the series. It’s my personal favorite next to Contra 3 & Shattered Soldier. The screen thing isn’t that big of a deal, you get used to it pretty quick. If you see a projectile coming from the top screen, you’ll be able to react to it by the time it makes it down to the bottom screen.

I actually agree with Zoo(for once!) on Hard Corps: Uprising It’s a good game, but I also don’t like the artstyle as much as traditional Contra games and things just felt off to me. I actually didn’t like the Genesis Hard Corps game that much either, to be honest.

I need to play through arcade Contra 1/Super C. It’s been a long, long time.
