first off, you misunderstand what kotaku and gawker are. its independent writers on a collective blog. it isn’t a news site. its an entertainment site.

are they click bait-y? sure. are you honestly raging pounding furiously on your keyboard because of a web page or are you are putting up a angry video game guy fasade 90% of the time to elicit a response? probably the second.

but how does being click baity mean that you don’t deserve to get paid? how does having varying (and sometimes wild) opinions make them completely invalid? they have really good insights with brian ashcraft on japan, they have a review system where they refuse to have their opinions on game devolve into a simple score to spite things like metacritic that really do fuck up the industry, they allow their writers to spark conversation and have opinions… will that lead to some really embarrassing headlines that looks bad via highlight reel? sure. kotaku might be click baity, but then they highlight tons of less news worthy things and gets exposure for things like indie games and independent artists and fan made things. its a blog with news sometimes.

but that is why people go to it. if you are expecting every video game blog to be facts and straight stories, i’ll show you a pile of failed sites that could’ve never competed on the internet. i’m not saying they are perfect, but EVERY gaming site has the same news. i visit plenty of straight up VG sites and industry sites, and between them, there isn’t much that sets them apart. kotaku does stand out. and it does a good job of it. they can fill up a week with constant stories while straight up news sites are still first paging news from weeks ago.

so saying they don’t deserve a cent is retarded. entertainment deserves money. and they use their platform in a multitude of ways. some positive. some negative. welcome to the internet. sites like tmz do some fucked up reporting and then sometimes they break stuff like ray rice domestic violence videos. even reputable news orgs like huffington have tons of click baity articles. deadspin gets the same shit as kotaku, but then they do break things like the mant’i teo story. even kotaku allows an anonymous platform to make a statement about things within the industry (http://kotaku.com/she-was-harassed-by-a-games-reporter-now-shes-speakin-1510714971) that other sites would probably avoid. that’s the advantage of being more casual and having an audience that is receptive to “fluff”. being occasionally divisive comes with the territory.

but people are fucking weird when it comes to entertainment. its like they don’t understand how the world works. its like people who think gamasutra is a news site. -_______________-

Hentai starts out as a Visual Novel, Dōjinshi, or other fan/low budget works before the studio rises funds some how to make an animated version of the series.

But when what you call ‘entertainment’ is being peddled as legitamate news, or it has more subjective articles than objective articles, it shouldn’t be taken seriously. Think about it, some random woman tried to convince people that shooting women in video games is rape. Not sexist. Full blown, contactless rape. That shit sounds dumb as all hell, but people keep going there. At least IGN will give facts most of the time. They don’t try to bullshit you with baited headlines (well, not all the time), and when a piece is an opinion, it’s usually noted.

I agree, the Ray Rice thing is bullshit. I actually think that the NFL didn’t have to do a damn thing to Ray Rice. If he has any legal reprocussions, they should be carried out, but the man doesn’t have to lose his job. Clearly there isn’t a huge issue since the woman is marrying him.

If they don’t do anything they risk pretty much losing out on the female fans they say they want. But in the end the NFL screws themselves one way or another.

Except for now the FBI is getting involved and Congress is investigating the NLF over the other 58 domestic abuse cases where other players who are repeat offenders are getting off way too easy.

Ray Rice was taken to court and punished accordingly to New Jersey law concerning first time domestic abuse offenders and he was already disciplined by the NFL.
Punishing him again 4 months later (for the same offence) is clearly double jeopardy.

The NFL doing this to Ray Rice as a scape goat to avoid some bad PR. Fucking Ben Roethlisberger after his 3rd rape charge only got a 6 game suspension.

No shit. As I said in the NFL thread, Double Jeopardy is normally feasible when new evidence is introduced that would cause a requirement of an increased punishment. However with the revelation that the League had the tape for TWO MONTHS before handing down the initial suspension, that no longer holds merit. Ray Rice can easily appeal the increase and likely win it due to that. However, due to how it was handled his career is done anyway (though since he was already declining as a RB he didn’t have long left to begin with but money is money).

As for avoiding bad PR, way too late. No matter what they do in this scenario, what happened here will screw them. The level of incompetency shown mars the league far more than what Ray Rice did.

ray rice isn’t SOME bad PR. keeping him around is bad business. NFL does a ton of bad business, but this might have been suicide. NBA lost huge sponsors keeping donald sterling around. you think that companies are going to advertise for a team that has domestic abuser caught on video pulling a full on cross counter on a female? if you did something that made your employer lose money by having you around, you better believe you’d be “suspended indefinitely”, and then think of an entire league that could face impact from this.

double jeopardy? NFL isn’t a court of law. it has bylaws that players sign and have to abide by for employment. the bylaws are fucking shitty and the nfl players union allowed goodell to be the be all end all, and pay for it often, but it was what they signed up for. nfl can’t be held to the same standards as our bill of rights. moralist or not, nfl is with its right to protect its “non-for-profit” business…

but more towards the kotaku point, so where do you fit in things like sports talk radio or characters like Stephen A Smith, skip bayless, and michael wilbon and the tons of other talking heads that are far from reporters, yet still provide entertainment for people, still get ratings, and have much higher paying jobs than others. most of these people make their living on outrageous inflammatory claims and assumptions, yet have TV shows and get paid a crap load more than bloggers… yet with out them, espn has to fill up 3+ hours per day with more sportcenters…

do you not feel as if there is a trade off between continuously coming up with a steady stream of content vs the occasional divisive comment? should things like sports talk radio that also double as news sources also not deserve money because they are not abiding by editorial and journalistic standards?

my point is that there is a place for places like kotaku. and there are places for straight up news.
