Vewlix 'Slim' worklog (plus some other bits ...)

i can’t wait to see this finished.

Once u done will u put the blue prints here on ur post. thanks

=

That would be seriously cool. I’d love to build another one but I think i’m running low on wife credits at the moment.

It shouldn’t be too long now. The fiddly bits are getting the wood grain smoothed out, wet sanding and sorting out all the blemishes

Yup I will, hopefully with a few notes on how to improve on the design as well.

The base is now primed, sanded, primed, painted, wet sanded and painted again in flat black. I’ll be varnishing once fully dry. The good thing is that I can work on the two pieces seperately. I’m pretty happy with it so far. More pictures soon I hope when there’s something worth seeing.

I’ve decided on the colour scheme. The sides will be gloss white as will the control panel edges. Base will be satin black.

Small update. Here’s a pic of the base painted before applying the polyurethane:

Must clean that lens again …

man… that doesn’t even look like wood anymore, that’s going to be so awesome when finished

Thats beautiful…

Thanks again!

The side/top piece is going to take a little more work. After priming, all the little inconsistencies are showing up so there is still an amount of prep work to do particularly on the wood grain on the inside of the side pieces. Time to get out the P38 body filler again

Primed Top:

Two coats of primer so far …

I love it, please share the blueprints when you finish it!

Zomg !

Kudos sir, it looks great so far…

also… plans and generalized measurements for the other DIY’ers would be totally awesome.

Not too long before I finish now and then I’ll post some plans.

The base now has 3 coats of poly and the top section is almost ready to be varnished. Looking forward to assembling this thing.

Edit:

Can’t resist a photo opportunity…

Fell free to send a .dxf or .dwf of the entire thing to run through my CNC here

Wish I had the time and space to do something like that. My Slim cabinet is on hold because of space mainly, think its gonna now happen when I move.

I wish I could model in 3D, you’d be welcome to them if I could. Still haven’t had time to get to grips with SketchUp yet either.

Sorry to hear about the lack of space, it must be pretty frustrating.

Good job on your new joysick design btw :amazed:

you can buy a vewlix panel from akihabara shop with all the buttons and sticks.

Holy cow, that is really awesome, how many coats is that and what do you use to protect that finish? I used polyurethane on one of my joystick that i’ve painted white. I really wanted to protect it so i put like 5-6 coats of it and turned it from being white to a yellow  I used polyurethane coz the clear coat i used was kinda of useless and was still scratchable.

God damn man, Looking GREAT. Cant wait to see more. I will be basing my viewlix off this build.

So about how much would you say you invested in this, If I could get a rough estimate it’d be greatly appreciated.

Super super sexy, keep up the good work, you’re almost there !

I’m building my own! The construction is done apart from the joystick panel which I hope to complete soon.

The base has 3 coats of polyurethane applied but the top is yet to recieve any. I’m using water based rather than oil as I’ve had issues with colour tainting before. I’ll know soon enough whether there’s issues with yellowing!

Thanks and have fun building it!

I’ve itemised the parts on a previous post and I’ll draw up a price list next time I’m at the store. I’ll then update each item on the original post with the cost to keep it accurate.

Thanks! I feel like I have the finishing line in sight. I’m trying to motivate myself to get some prep work done during this week but am finding it hard due to long days at work.

Edit: top section has 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of flat white paint.

Just a thought but did you apply oil based varnish over water based paint or vice versa? I did that once and had the same results.

You are going one helluva good job! Can’t wait to see it completed.
