That looks freakin awesome!!! How are the sides of the CP attached? I don’t see any screws anywhere so is it glued on?
Thanks! The side is just stuck on with carpet tape atm to test the fit. It needs to be painted seperately from the main CP and will be glued and screwed on from the inside. The main section of the CP will be covered in black vinyl like the front panels once it’s been prepped and smoothed properly (the vinyl can show up imperfections if care isn’t taken). I try not to attach anything permanently until the last possible moment.
Just ordered some opal white acrylic for the movelist inlay so I still have some work to do on the lid.
Are you going to make doors for the front?
As this is going to be for the PC and 360, I didn’t really have this in my plans. It’s a personal preference thing I guess but I’d rather have external access and good cooling. Mind you, I am thinking about back panels with ports, fans etc. Don’t know whether I’ll get round to this though.
This is looking super nice. I’m very jealous of your woodworking skills…and your racing pod.
I was starting to work on turning my crappy Playseats Gaming Seat (don’t buy this thing folks) into something much more usable, but I might just scrap it all together. Do you have your racing pod project detailed anywhere online? - Sorry, just found the link to your hand drawn plans (drives me nuts when people do that to me). I am so building one of those. Thanks a bunch for posting your info up for free!
How about your Vewlix Slim? Any plans or SketchUp file? I’m curious what the dimensions are compared to mine.
Anyway, awesome work!
Thanks Donovan! Have fun building the pod, it’s much easier than the cabinet.
I have to say that your cabinet was the one which inspired me to build a Vewlix style cab the most. I was originally going to build a Lindbergh that someone had made for VF5. Fortunately I had to wait to get going on the project and that’s when I saw yours and thought ‘why not?’. It’s amazing what you can do with a few sheets of MDF.
I’ll certainly be posting plans once I’ve completed it. I’ll look at Sketchup as well as making ‘standard’ plans.
I reckon the Slim is about 8-9cm shorter than the full size, adjusted to make sure the smaller monitor doesn’t look too out of place. It’s also 65cm rather than 80cm wide. The height to the top of the control panel will be 71 cm once the feet are on; this is based on the real cabinet and is the most important measurement really.
Thanks again!
So now comes the hard work. Filling, sanding, filling, sanding, priming, sanding, painting, sanding, varnishing, sanding and polishing.
Some sad looking pictures (especially of my drill box which I forgot to close when routing) of the work in progress

I used P38 car body filler on the bits which needed it most (top piece joints) as it’s supposed to be slightly flexible and easy to sand. It also stinks …
lol @ the drill box! Back when I first routed all of the sides of my stick case I did it in my garage and got dust on EVERYTHING. Now I know better to just go outside and do it hehe. Keep up the good work man.
is this going to be a 1 player cabinet? seems like it might be cramped for 2 folks…
very nice work! if only I had the time and equipment…
any clue what your total $ spent will be?
You don’t have any kind of dust collection? Even a smaller shop vac hooked up to the router would help it form flying all over the garage. I use a 5HP Ridgid Shop Vac (about $100 at HD) and it gets almost all the visible dust. (I still wear a half face respirator). You just gotta shake or clean off the filter inside pretty often to keep the suction strong.
Thanks! I’m going to resist estimating on the sepnd until it’s complete. I had come up with a figure but with all the extra bits and pieces, it adds up. I am keeping a mental note of everything so will be able to give a final sum when finished. It will be single player version but I may build a dual panel later; that’s why I’ve gone for bolting on the panel rather than screwing and gluing.
lol no. It’ll be the next tool I invest in though! A bit tight on funds at present and the garage now needs a clean anyway. I had tried using a standard household vac but that didn’t seem to do much.
Just build another one and have them face head to head
Run a hdmi splitter from the one console, and away you go
Don’t tempt me … errr I think you may have done!
mate if you lived in sydney… i’d pay money for this
I wish i had the necessary skills to do what you’re doing, I have the tools, certainly know the electronic side of it, i just don’t have the skills for the wood work side
You probably do have the skills mR_CaESaR sir! I can’t say that I’m an experienced woodworker by any stretch of the imagination as I’ve only built a few things.
Anyway, I’m still hard at work on this thing. I had a go with my spray gun today to prime the base and it was a disaster :annoy: I managed to sand it back down again so it was nice and smooth and am back to priming with a roller. Hopefuly I’ll finish most of the base by the end of the weekend (primed, black base coat, possibly one coat of poly in a satin finish). I’ve nearly finished prepping the top section and hope to have that primed as well soon. It takes ages to get everything nice and smooth filling and sanding but I’m hopeful it will turn out well. No pics at the moment but hope to take some more soon.
Oh yes, and my opal acrylic for the moveslist inlay and the joystick and buttons have arrived
hahah thanks for having the faith… but i wouldn’t know which router bit to use and how proper straight cuts on the circular saw…
i’ve had 3 attempts at making a simple box… each time, its ended up cockied (wobbly) as the joins weren’t proper right angles :S
i can’t even imagine what this would be like…
I’ve been inspired! How much time have you put into this project? And how much cash?
I didn’t us a circular saw at all for this project! I rough cut everything (fairly accurately to minimise trimming) with a jigsaw and used a flush trim router bit to get the edges straight. A large chamfer bit was used for the bevelled edges.
I started about 4 weeks ago working mainly at weekends. I’d estimate around 10-12 days so far but I’m turning round the last bend to head into the final straight. I reckon it will be about 95% complete by next weekend.
It’s probably better to give a breakdown of materials as things are more expensive in the UK and I’ve had to use smaller pieces of MDF to fit in my car.
4 X 18mm MDF 4’x2’
1 x 12mm MDF 4’x2’
1 x 6mm MDF 4’x2’
8 x 2’ lengths of 25mmx25mm cross section wood strip (base inside supports and upper monitor/speakersupport shelves)
2 x 30mmx40mm Wood strip for cabinet legs
Bevelled trim for verical inside front sides (hides monitor edges)
Bevelled trim for horizontal strips to hide monitor controls, monitor logo and join between marquee and top front panel)
100 40mm screws
30 35mm screws
Wood glue
P38 car body filler
MDF water based primer
Water based balck/white paint
Water based matt (comes out a great satin!) and gloss polyurethane varish
Lots of sandpaper.
Black self adhesive vinyl roll (68 cm wide) x2
Speaker cloth
Levelling feet
Monitor 16:9 true widescreen aspect ratio with VGA, HDMI and DVI
Logitech sound system (5.1)
Sanwa JLF and snap-in/screw in buttons.
Madcatz arcade stick to hack
6cm x 56cm opal acrylic strip (moves list inlay)
Tools used:
Trend T11 1/2 inch router - flush trim bit and large chamfer bit mounted in a router table.
Jigsaw
Hacksaw
Yet to order clear cast 3mm acrylic and artwork.
Will still need a sheet of 3mm board to comblete the control panel (attached to 12mm MDF)
May tidy up the back and mount a few ports / power socket / fans etc.
I may have missed a few things but that’s as much as I can think of at the moment.
That shit is amazing, I think after I get some things paid for and out of the way, Ima start working on a head to head set up.
