Vewlix 'Slim' worklog (plus some other bits ...)

Oh, I totally meant it as a compliment.

That chalkboard vinyl is magic. I just got a roll recently and it’s really a nice surface. I have yet to apply it though.

It’s great stuff to use x24 - the surface does have to be flat to ensure a good finish but it beats painting it.

Ordered some EL Tape (Electroluminescent lighting - white) and thinking about some of the wire as well - may go for green and embed it into the desk for that Tron look … errr … except Tron would be blue … hopefully you get my drift.

@emphatic - compliment accepted mate.

Sides have been completed. Waiting for them to dry …

Couple more pics of the monitor shelf sides:

Desk sides waiting to go on next …

Is that textured paint? If so, what kind? I’ve been looking for that kind of finish as well. The chalkboard vinyl gets me that finish but then paint would be great for non flat surfaces.

It’s actually gloss black ‘dusted’ with a final spray - not sure about the finish and will probably re-do it.

… I did re-do it … for the last few weeks. Not sure why the colour looks grey in these shots. Will post a vid of the games’ room when everything’s sorted. There may not appear to be much of a difference but the finish is 100% better. Still have a few things to add to tidy it up on the front of the monitor shelf. Excuse the mess … every time I build anything, my room degenerates into a bomb site.

I’ll be getting the grey legs powder coated in black.

Made some corner pieces for the monitor stand. Still a work in progress (not finished spraying and need to make the recessed bit less recessed and insert some vinyl and a logo).

Was getting a bit fed up with stuff all over my desk so have started to make a custom storage unit. This will be covered in black vinyl and a shaped top ‘cap’ added.

Plastic covered coat hangers cut and shaped:

Storage for headphones and an XBOX controller:

The white plastic on the hangers will by sprayed with black vinyl dye. The unit will be attached to the wall.

Double post.

Why not coat them with plastidip for extra hold?

I’d never heard of that stuff, it looks really interesting. More stuff to experiment with (too late for this one though as I’ve sprayed and attached already).

Thanks a lot for the heads-up x24.

Can’t get the lighting right unfortunately. Looks much better IRL.

Will be adding some extra bits to it soon.

AWESOME !!!

Thanks Hobapli - just made a hanger for my gaming glasses also.

Nearly finished with the desk now. I decided to make some wings for it (excuse the mess):

Fitted some LED lighting on an RF remote (can’t see it too well in the daylight unfortunately)

Also hung a power strip behind the vanity board to tidy the cables up. Just a few minor things to complete and it’s on to my next project which will be an XBOX entertainment centre.

Working on a new console cabinet for my son. Will also be making some extra add-on pieces for 2 player fighting and also pinball action. The idea is to make a stand-alone unit initially and then add the extra pieces later. This is my second attempt at building one of these - hopefully it’ll turn out as I want.

Not really tried my hand at modelling software so here’s a rough sketch as to how the base unit will look:

Good old blackboard vinyl - the stuff is great. Covered the inside compartment where the console will sit.

Bottom shelf.

Interior.

Need to decide whether to use T-molding or simply paint the opening.

Doors will be added using some black mesh wrapped around a frame.

Front and sides skinned.

Sides bevelled and filled to give a bit more of an interesting shape.

More progress next weekend.

Great process!

I have a question about your joinery going on there. I see you are using Furring Strips or something comparable in size, what kind of screws are you using to join the MDF to the wood in that case. And otherwise if you were just joining MDF pieces together without wood, what kind of screws are you using in that instance?

I’m assuming pilot holes with either course thread drywall screws or some special MDF screw?

Also, which glue due you recommend for attaching the blackboard vinyl to the MDF?

Generally I will dry assemble and when I’m happy will disassemble and reassemble using wood glue. I’ve tried lots of different screws but the best I have found for this type of application is a brand called Turbodrive. They have a very sharp tip and a ‘milti-cutting’ thread. They are really easy to use with MDF (unlike many others I’ve tried) and seems to do the job well. Small pilot holes are used in all cases.

The blackboard vinyl is self-adhesive but is thicker and much more durable than the standard stuff. You have to be patient with it and make sure all the surfaces are completely flat. I generally use car body filler on MDF ends and sand it down before covering.

Hope that helps Zensouken.

Thanks again Emphatic

That’s a big help, I just need to find a comparable product here in the US. Also, I forgot to ask; which screw length do you find the most favorable?
