hey eric, could you do me exactly the same as that but in red/white (im not sure if its easy to do if you allready had a template) but for 2 players (xbox 360) that i could take to my printers?, i havent the foggiest how to do it, i dont have any photoshop software and havent got a clue how to construct the control panels but i just dont fancy 2xt.e sticks for my vewlix, so im gonna go for it! no worries if not.
Regards daniel.
also do you not need the rb and lb to navigate the 360ās menus?
Thanks to everyone building Vewlix cabs at the momentā Iāve finally got myself set up to complete the damn thing after waiting for the cold weather to go. The next set of updates will turn it from this:

Into this:

Keep your eyes peeled for updates over the next few days.
Side art will also be applied from the templates I made previously but I need to get some better ones printed out.

Looking forward to your finish. It is already very sweet!!!
Thanks mate. Itās good to be doing something other than decorating the houseā¦
Hereās my first attempt at making one of the bands to go around the side of the top section.

looks awesome. what material is that? black vinyl?
Itās got a covering of black vinyl but itās actually made out of high impact polystyrene (plastic card). I tried to ordersome of this stuff a while back but it never got delivered. I tried a different company and it turned up a couple of days ago. I ordered a few sheets to do the black trim. Itās effectively lie laminate but that stuff is really hard to get hold of in the UK, plus itās expensive. Always on the lookout for new materias to use! I reckon that this is going to be really useful stuff for construction.

Band cut out of plasticard:

Canāt wait to see how this turns out! I was going to try with some metallic vinyl but it didnāt look so hot.
I was thinking the same but i was going to try an adhesive metal tape, the kind that comes with a dishwasher that goes underneath the worktopā¦(prob havent got a clue what im talkin about!) looking good so far tho ericleroi cant wait to see the result! good luck.
Hey ericleroi,
How are you installing that plastic card stuff to the wood? Is it stiff like kitchen laminate?
The plastic card will easily bend round curves but not at sharp angles, infact it snaps. Thatās why Iāve covered it in black vinyl. Itās the same stuff Iāve coverd parts of the cab with so itās a good match. For the angled bits, I scored a line on the back of the plastic card and once the vinyl was attached, I snapped it to get a clean edge. Itās come out pretty well.
Once Iāve cut all the pieces out and got a tight fit, Iāll glue it all in place. Iāll then cut extra pieces of wood for the back as the black area will protrude by an additional few cms at the top and bottom of the side panels (see the before and after pic above to see what I mean). It should end up looking a lot more like the original at this rate. Iām also going to get some clear plexi for the top of the cab for artwork like the original.
Are you going to use regular glue? OR some special stuff? The plasticcard stuff seems a good alternative to formica, which from what I can tell from googling is harder to cut and glue down. I need to find some now, hehe.
Regular plastic bonding glue should be fine but Iāll test it out on some scrap beforehand. If you search for 'hip plastic" or āhips plasticā you should be able to find what you need. I bought several thichnesses, .25, .5 and 1mm. The .5 seems the best as itās thick enough but really easy to work with. I may use this in the future if Iām ever applying vinyl to wood. Sticking some of this down between the two would give a super smooth finish.
hey ericleroi, how do you find the led strip? and did you have to get a transformer to power them? im doing my control panel and was after some white leds, the led tape seems to be the best option, but im not sure where to get it as i had some dodgy xmas lights from those ebay sellers from china! do you have any pics of the art illuminated (move list)?
cheers.
Hi sponge, I got the led strip from ebay and itās a self adhesive one. It probably isnāt quite bright enough for my liking so I may get another couple. I got a cheap transformer to power it from Maplins. I donāt have any other pics at the moment and Iām in the middle of redecorating the house so I canāt even get to finish my trim ⦠grrrrrr ⦠at least the room Iāve just finished painting is my games room.
Finally managed to get some time to continue with this. Anothrr band for the bottom. Not a great pic, Iām in a rush ā¦

Itās a bit like a jigsaw cutting these out. It overlaps the edges as Iāll need to line things up with the other pieces of trim.
I ended up going with a fluorescent light tube. I havenāt done a writeup on my site yet, but you can see pretty much what went down in my Flickr photo set:

ericleroi,
Those black strips look amazing. Iām going to have to figure that out!
Hey Donovan, that looks super great! Iād thought about that but was concerned about any heat melting the acrylic. Is that likely to be a problem? If not, I may well go for your idea.
