Vewlix 'Slim' worklog (plus some other bits ...)

I came…drools

Hey Eric think there’d be anyway a 2P panel would be possible?:wonder:

Overall though goodshit man!

-EX

I would buy it. If I had money

I second the idea about a 2P panel.

this is fantastic!! great job here! Would be interested to see a 2P panel as well!

I would think that if you used a 2P panel on this Slim version of the cabinet, someone would have to sit on the other person’s lap.

maybe get rid of the stripe and ad a vewlix design only on the bottom half i dunno though just throwing out there but damn man that is some awesome work you got going on their and like tony the tiger says IIITTTSSSSSs GRRRRRREEEEEEEAAAATTTTTT!!!

Suggestion for side art…http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196685

Can’t wait to get those plans…got a couple of people who want to get started building a few to have for co-op play. My brother decided to help out, he’s a carpenter, so he’s just waiting for plans. He can get the pieces cut all at once at his job; cnc style, assembly would begin afterwards.

As far as things to put in the build guide, the method you used to paint the cab, in more detail. It looks so pro, I know I’m not that good, so it’ll help guys like me out a lot. Also, I’m not very good with the technical side of things…perhaps a small how-to for the control panel controller hacking, or maybe a link to educate some of us who are less informed on how to do it.

Thx for sharing your hard work with us, and giving us a chance to build and enjoy one of our own.

Genius!

Really it looks very cool with the whole side art on it…!

Yeah, tell me about it. Frustrating or what?!

Definitely possible.

I’ll detail the cost breakdown in the plans thread.

If I were to do this (which I have thought about), I’d make a completely new and wider panel. As it’s bolted on, it’s pretty easy to remove.

lol, agreed. A new wider CP is definitely needed. It only needs to be another 15cm or so to be the same side as the real one.

Still thinking about the art but have to admit the continuous stripe is the best option to me at the moment.

That’s where I got the original idea for the artwork from! The CNC approach sounds like a great idea.

I’ll include some information on the finishing as well which in many ways is the most difficult thing to get right. I went through a few finishes before I was happy. I’m still going to look at waxing it at some point.

I’ll also be sure to add some detail on the CP construction as well.

Thanks! Now I just need to turn that Photoshop image into reality!

It doesn’t do it justice but here’s a picture of it running the PC demo:

I can’t seem to take pictures which give it a real world sense of proportion somehow. The top always looks a lot larger in some of these pictures.

Could you make a video clip of the cabinet running?

Yes, no problem. I’ll do that when I install the speakers and locate my wife’s camcorder.

i’ve been thinking about this… if you are using an xbox, how are you going to get sound… do you have to run a receiver (or boombox with inputs) or something?

The sound system is a 5.1 Logitech Z-5400:

I can connect the optical out from the XBOX and 6 channel feed from the PC sound card into the reciever unit.

I can’t get enough of this!!!

Looks absolutely amazing, well done, can’t wait for a video tour. :lovin:

I don’t remember reading the info anywhere, but can you rotate the screen ? I mean if you’d want to play any vertical schmup someday…

I must say that it’s come together really well. It definitely has the aesthetic of the original, but I honestly think it actually looks nicer.

Been following you since the beginning. Amazing turnout awesome job

I very much plan on shamelessly copying your design because it’s so awesome. I was just wondering if you ever thought of a way to maybe make the monitor Vertical if the urge to play a shump ever arises? Really big fan of those and before I start to Frankenstein your design, have you ever thought of how that may be possible?

Thank you! Hopefully the video tour isn’t too far away.

I can’t unfortunately. Agreed, shmups would be cool. I do have a MAME cab with a vertical screen for that luckily. It would be quite possible to design the front panel to do this but I think that the speakers would need to be mounted differently.

Thank you! I tried to get the proportions right and allow some flexibility to add the monitor. If I were to build another, there would be a few things I’d tweak but overall I’m pleased with how it turned out.

If the monitor mount and the front pieces were designed differently, it should be possible. I had thought about it as I saw a Vewlix running some shmups. I discarded the idea as I already have a dedicated virtical MAME cab and felt that it might be too time consuming to implement. I’d be really interested to see this attempted though. I could always redesign later.

EDIT: Just picked up my wire and disconnects so will start on getting it working soon. I’m tempted to buy SF IV for the PC whilst I’m waiting for the XBOX situation to be sorted out.

great job! very jealous and very psyched to see your project finished!
