EX only , hold any punch button and dont press any directions when you’re close to their heads
Very good answer by Miss Darkness here.
Well, you know, I’ve always been one of those guys who said “practice execution at least half an hour before playing against a real opponent”. Even if your BnBs are easy as shit, being on point is very, very important. A friend of mine plays Bison, and that character has pretty easy links. Still, he sits at least half an hour in practice mode to train his BnBs before having matches. And, believe me or not, he never misses any combos. I’ve never seen him miss ANY combo. Like some other guys suggested, put your dummy on random block, and get going. The most important combo for me is
cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.mp
Practise this to the death. You can’t believe how often you hit a single cr.lp, but are unable to combo it until the very end. That is missed damage potential, every time.
Also, always make sure your kara throws are on point. One of the things that you need to be consistent in your game are walk-up kara’s. You need to be able to hit them at the exact distance, codILIY-E0I#t=1m09s"]so they barely connect. Best ticks in my opinion are st.lk (2F+ on block) -> kara throw and cr.lp (1F+ on block) -> kara throw. I always get comments by the people I play that the latter is just pure mindfuck. In their opinion it’s like, . This is by the way not something I made up. No sir, Makoto shows this technique all the time.
Once they start teching, the fun begins. Oh lord, you can’t believe how many df.hk -> ST I can land in a match, because my opponent is .
Maj-style articles rule. I know.
Because I just got majorly frustrated at an online match I just lost:
Rufus > CONSTANTLY doing Falcon kick.
Is there any way for Vega to get around this? I tried backslash, ST, FBA, SHC, every punch, tried getting past by just barely sliding under them and they still followed so I could get away.
I found this majorly frustrating since nothing I seemed to do worked.
Any tips on how to get around stuff like this? Since it’s not the first it’s happened.
FA into back dash may work if you attack with the FA and then back dash. I usually do it on cammy all the time so it should work here. Sometimes I can even get a lvl 2 if the attack was from farther away. If they are doing it really close then you could use st. lk to get them off. I am not sure about what to do when they are crossing you up though. Maybe just try to block and then wait till they not cross you to do one of the other options.
It is common to have Rufus bullshit you with Dive Kick. That is why priority # is to not let him get close. He will throw you if you block and his throws hurt like a motherfucker. (They do more damage than the average throw.)
WATCH HIS PATTERN All Rufus’s play slightly different.
-
If he gets a decent amount of height before falconing, find the range he starts trying to bullshit you and AIR THROW. WARNING: Do NOT do this more than twice. He will then start fishing for his jumping to HK to EX Snake or jumping HK to Ultra. The damage he gets on both of those are far more rewarding than they EVER should be considering the braindeadness of it and the priority and enormity of the hitbox on that jumping kick.
-
If the Rufus is good, he’ll be using very tight timing with his dive kick (barely getting any height on his jumps before falconing). If he gets close you’re in trouble. Standing Jab is your best friend here, but not perfect. If you manage a slight distance and he’s not already in the air, I sometimes do a Crouching strong cancelled into KKK.
NEVER NEVER Do a KKK without canceling into it from crouching strong. The block/hit stun of c.strong will prevent instant punishment. KKK that isn’t cancelled into from another move is begging for punishment. It literally is saying “HEY COME HERE, PUSH ME CLOSER TO THE WALL, CONTINUE YOUR PRESSURE, AND HAVE A FREE THROW OR BLOCK STRING WHILE YOU’RE AT IT!! HAHA I LOVE PAIN!!!”
Sorry, but there is no perfect answer. Rufus’s falcon spam bull shit is a solid strategy against non-DP characters. It’s not noob mashing or noob cheesing, it is a legitimate strong offensive pressure option Rufus has against non DP characters. Expect to see good Rufus’s continue to use it on you.
At View, Saki-bomb, Joz, and Miz Darkness:
Thanks for those replies. Sasaki, when I switched to stick you know what suffered the worst? Tick throwing and blocking high. I have to get those standing shorts and c.jabs to tick throws back down!! I used to have a brutal standing short to throw game!
Miz Darkness, what a good answer! I want you to know how welcome you are here! Thanks!
Most of the combos seem to be in par with what I was practicing in training, but you guys definitely gave me some more great ideas! Also, I wanted to know how the other Vega’s practiced, just to see if I was somewhat sane with my training rituals.
I have to admit though, recently I have embarked upon beating ALL hard trials, and I have spent hours with other characters trying to knock out their trials, and my Vega game has suffered! Links that used to be easy are tough!
In case you’re curious, here are my thoughts so far on hard trials:
Chun Li’s hard trials, which I have heard were very difficult, really WEREN’T. I didn’t find them to be very bad.
Gen’s 1-4 weren’t too bad, either, except for number five. It’s the devil and I can’t beat it.
Viper and Fuerte are hands down the hardest, with Gen Five mixed in
Runners up for being very difficult trials:
Guile Five. Blanka Five. Sakura in general. Seth Four? Cammy Five.
This will make me sound scrubby, but I’m also struggling with Ken four and Gouken four.
one thing ppl should practice is the spacing for standing light kick and kara throw, splicing in cosmic heels to punish any of those whiffed throw techs, and also comboing out of standing light kicks and integrating them with jump ins and c. mk as well. just mess around with that stuff.
the one thing i’m going to do to practice that is, set the bot on random block, and just continually walk forward and do st. lk… if the lk hits, and i hit another one to get 2 hit combo, i combo into c. fp, st. rh, or c. mp, or, c. jp, c. mp. If one gets blocked I’ll cosmic heel or kara throw, or just keep doing them. the idea is to get a feel for doing that sort of offense because it’s vega’s strongest, it owns really hard doing that.
IMO if a Vega player doesn’t know how to do these two things;
- Cosmic Heel, ST
- Kara throw
they shouldn’t be doing anything but practice those until they are second nature
Thanks for the tips, I will give them a go when I get another Rufus player. the timing he has was pretty quick, barely leaving the floor, I think I managed 2 hits before I gave up. I managed when I got to a corner to slide under them and tried to dash back to plan something but they caught up again really quickly.
I agree, his throws do hurt like a bitch (I play Rufus myself and have seen the damage that and heavy kick into EX snake strike can do since my other half uses Chun Li and my jaw dropped at the damage when I first saw it.)
I must say that your posts are really insightful because there’s some things in there I wouldn’t have thought of because I give up so easily when cornered XD
to beat Rufus you have to play a heavy run away game and bait antics. rufus is a easy match up if your run away game is tight, rufus WILL destroy you in a close up fight
Is jumping HP -> .cl HP -> .cr HP a useful tactic to anybody? It seesms to me that it does a lot of damage for no meter, but I was curious what other thought.
you lost the match because you were the aggressor rufus match up is keep the f away n don’t trap ur self in corner
i am quite confident that i can beat he’s rufus, rufus one of the character i have got high win ratio.
I find myself pretty inconsistent with Vega’s links. How do you all practice the timing of them? Do you use visual cues? Or sounds? Interesting enough, I can do them pretty well if I’m playing on a controller but not on the arcade stick.
You think you could beat J.wong?! seriously?! I’d like to see you do that.
You played well, Arlieth… You guessed wrong once or twice and maybe flipped too much. You could have blocked on wakeup. Sometimes you didn’t and you ate a BnB but oh well… Fuck it. Rufus is a shitty character. This matchup is, in my opinion, Vegas worst. I lose a lot against RU because he gets my blood to boil so fast. Especially when I have an almost guaranteed win and he somehow takes it back by dealing 2 BnBs to me. That’s when I lose the whole set because I’m spittin mad.
The worst is especially when you’re in life lead, and then he catches you with a bnb that ends with galactic tornado and it pits you into the corner and then does ultra… Most times your mask should fall off if you’re like half life, and there comes a 500+ ultra even with the combo scaling… gg
MILF probably thinks that Mago’s Sagat is free. =S
Anyway, good try Arlieth.
@ view619 I honestly think & believe i can beat he’s Rufus unfortunately i can’t face him and i think a lot of vega player don’t study the match up closely for instance ryu match up lp srk does 120-130 damge meter gain (30/40), vega izuna drop does 150 meter gain (i think 80) u figure. Of course u have to be confidence in your izuna drop and other trick and bait. also a lot of vega player believe don’t backflip is a matter of knowing when and when not.
belief it or not Sagat match up versus vega is not as bad as half the sf4 cast (guile, Blanka, barlog, Abel, Zangief, Seth, Cammy, Gen and so forth)
i never never follow the tier list i experiment and watch video of high level player
I personally find Sagat to be an easy matchup. Blanka, Balrog and Guile I find to be headaches recently because of Balrogs damage output and I can’t stand turtley Guile/Blanka players. They tend to bring out the worst in me because I lack a lot of patience.
What’s the input for j. fp, st. close fp xx fp rcf combo? Any visual clue when to cancel? thanx.
Cancel the FIRST hit of standing fierce. The timing isn’t too bad. Just don’t try and cancel the second hit… it won’t work.
