Pr rog is the type of player that do dps right after you punished his last dp. He does it for a good reason though.
I didn’t say that he was going to back himself into a corner. Why would anyone do that in neutral is beyond me. He can bulldog you into a corner instead by just walking forward and blocking. He gains V bar for blocking as well so you’re just helping him get there faster. What I am meant by not approaching is that he can basically just pick a spot on the screen and hold it and Vega can’t do anything about it without taking risks.
So I’ve found out that my biggest trouble is against characters that can lame out Vega pretty hard. Nash being the most notable. He can just sit back and force you to kill yourself getting in. If you sit back, you are at his mercy as well. It just feels like Nash has better neutral and rush down game than Vega. Other characters that I have similar troubles with are guile and Birdie. Anyone that can force you to take the initiative. It just feels like Vega doesn’t have strong ways to get in. Any help is greatly appreciated.
This is the same case with Chun-Li. I swear this bitch has Guile fireballs.
My advice to you is to play extremely patient. Once you make those characters come to you, then you can start your game. Frustrate them if you can to the point where they start whiffing normals out of your range. If you’ve got the claw on, try for a few v-skills (claw on only from max range). Vega’s v-skill can be useful at times, but you need to be extremely careful with how you use it. V-meter is precious for Vega and the sooner you get your gauge full, the sooner you make them fear your buttons more. Vega ain’t all about the range anymore… I think what they did with him for his new design is make him a good whiff punisher.
He doesn’t. Can’t slide, roll, jump, or fly in. Not enough range or speed on long range pokes to poke your way in, either. Basically, with Vega, you don’t get in. They have to fuck up on your behalf.
Vega is an outfighter…you are suposed to use your longer normals and poke from the mide range…basically you have to be annoying…you get the big punishes once the opponent…starts to get impatient (you can get then to wiff reversals and throw unsafe specials once you press buttons from st mp range for enought time)…that is the SF 4 “matador” style…with claw off you have to take risk and dance in and out of their range…in fact in this game were a lot of character have longe pokes with the same or more range than Vega you are forced to do some dancing even with claw on
You know, I wouldn’t have an issue with this if Vega didn’t share the same forward walk speed as Chun-Li. Vega should have THE BEST FORWARD AND BACK WALK SPEED IN THE GAME. You’re right though, this is pretty much how to play Vega as far as I’m concerned.
That’s always how you played Vega since he was conceived. That’s nothing new. Hard to out range and stay outside of opponents who have sweeps that start up in 7 frames and hits under your longest, fastest poke at 8 frames.
At least in this game we can dance in and out and still use a special since we don’t have to charge anymore.
Whelp at least we dont get focus crumpled from doing a cr lp anymore.
vega j.mk is good, you can mix it up with empty jump to force the issue vs. some characters. Nemo uses it a lot.
Do you mean as a jump in or as a neutral jump, or both?
@Veserius I started doing that a lot against characters with 1 button all purpose AA jabs/strongs/fierces. They usually have shit range so I jump like I’m going to hit them with j.MK after attempting it once, but empty jump instead. If not, walk back, repeat, and mix it up between when I press the button and when I don’t. At max range for j.MK you’re usually outside of DP range so if they try it, that’s a free CC. Only character I wouldn’t try this on is Guile because of the range on flash kick, or Cammy because the angle on her up kicks is ridiculous. You could still get hit by those two even empty jumping
@Vhozon it’s good no matter what.
Using j.mk from a distance is still risky except against characters with bad mobility. Against the rest you are going to eat a walk forward anti air, dash dp etc
Not over a fireball. They can’t walk forward when they’re throwing one, and when they recover you should still be out of range if you empty jump. Against Chun this would be a problem when she throws a slow fireball, she recovers fast and has a fast walk.
everything is a controlled risk, thats how fighting games work.
holding down back and hitting buttons feels safer though.
Can we talk more of the fang matchup? I have like a 20% win rate to online ranking fangs above top 500
I think fang as a char has great tools. I play a pretty good fang often and it’s a tough matchup but what I try to keep in tune for the strategy is
[] Delayed wake up is good to avoid the up ball dash mixup
[] St hk is +1 but he only has 4 frame jab so if he’s close challenge with st lk
[] Cr mk is +2. Block
[] Coward crouch is an advantageous move but has a lot of startup. Poke with slide or neural jump for full punish
[] Cr mp is typical pressure ender, challenge with your cr mp or maybe st mk. Don’t allow him to continue pressure after that
[] U can challenge the smoke that he puts on the ground with ex fba and best it cleanly

Fangs like to use v reversal or ex command dash to get out of the corner. Bait that with st lk or cr lp and then throw on reaction
That’s all I got
Vid of some of the stuff I mentioned although this set of games is pretty Grimey. Also I’m only ranked silver but haven’t been able to get a ranked match in the past 5 weeks. Also have Been trying to do more work with claw on but the combo potential seems much worse
Build meter as best as you can and be patient. You can ex fba his poison on the ground from far as Fuck and super it from 90% of the screen. Raw fireballs you can forward fierce.
"What a revolting haircut. It baffles
what are you talking about? Vega’s forward walk speed is 0.055 while Chun’s is 0.0535 and
Vega has chunli beat by 0.0015
Where’d you read that?
