Vega Match-Ups Thread: I Only Understand the Pain of Being too Strong and Beautiful

What the fuck do I do against Necalli?

Also, I feel like Laura forces me to play defensively. I play Rushdown with Vega but for some reason when I fight Laura I cannot control the match. I feel like I’m being forced to block instead of being the one to force the blocking. Then of course Laura has those bullshit 50/50’s

For someone to be so Low Tier she’s a troublesome bitch. Only Vega can be high tier and struggle in a matchup against a bottom 5 char.

Laura IS NOT low tier. She is basically a tamed Mika with better footsies/neutral game and an overhead.

I play more of a zoning claw than rushdown, but I do think keep way is a superior strategy against Laura. Unless we are at a serious health disadvantage I don’t really see why we would want to get in her grill. We can keep her at bay for the majority of the match, and there is really fuck all she can do about it without us making a mistake or her getting a hard read on something.

She has almost no safe way to approach us. And as long as we don’t walk ourselves to the corner she really can’t force us into much of anything.

Edit: She has better neutral than Mika but her neutral is still gimped compared to ours.

Laura can go all random with her armored move or with a jump in and beat your claw s.MP “superior zoning”. Im just pointing out that she is not as weak as people claim her to be and while Vega can keep her away for a while and scratch her bonita face she will get in at one point and she will get a lot of damage from pokes/grabs into more pokes/grabs.

Honestly for beating Laura you have to go on the offensive and mix her up or at least shift from defensive to offensive seamlessly according to match scenarios or she will kick your ass.

So Chun. Few weeks back I could tell this character has a lot of potential. I’ve been playing someone locally, using Vega of course - and the matchup has now become downright ridiculous. It’s now all about abusing fireball and st.LK.

Chun’s fireball game is just too good. Vega has almost no options against it. She can spam fireballs, and they come out so fast, his fw.HP gets counterhit easily.
If you think jumping in is a good idea, her st.LK is so fast and will almost never even trade, let alone get beaten by anything Vega has. What’s worse, she can dash under (or pretend to) and go for meaty setups after Vega gets reset in the air. If you think st.LK doesn’t do any damage, think again because she can easily hit confirm from lights into mediums.

Even on half-decent jumps, she recovers fast enough from the fireballs to anti-air with st.LK.

Vega’s v-skill is totally useless against her fireballs. At best, he can probably use it against her EX fireball, since it travels fast enough to go through Vega. But 90% of fireballs are normal anyway.

V-trigger is also near useless against fireballs. She recovers to fast to do the aerial v-trigger. You almost have to guess.

Ex Roll - totally useless - even if you react really fast - she can actually recover and react to the roll with ex bird if she needs to.

My only viable options to get in are, gamble with sweep (which also gets counterhit by her cr.jab and fireball) - and hope it hits.

Jump in anticipation of a fireball - again a great risk because she can anti-air with st.lk and go for ground mixups on reset.

What’s worse - and this pretty crucial too, her cr.MP goes under Vega’s standing normals! It goes under fw.HP and st.MP clawless (not sure about claw on, probably that too). She can literally mash it into V-trigger and score huge damage.

Does anyone else play against Chuns who abuse fireball and st.LK?

I’ve tried playing safe, block a lot, find the right time to dash in/jump in…but it’s not really a viable way to beat her. You may get a round here and there, but overall, I feel Vega’s tools are just made null in this matchup; whilst Chun’s tools shine.

You are over dramatizing how bad a lot of things are, and don’t even know the actual rotten stuff in the match.

  • cr.mp craps on most her options at the range for it, as its faster than anything she has but her lights.
  • doing v-skill attack at the proper range is safe to anything but super, and will beat any fireball attempts/pokes at that range.
  • cr.mp easily beats ia legs at most ranges. A luxury most of the cast does not have.

You don’t need to jump in this match.

That said, ex legs punishes f+hp and both ASE ground options for free, so that sucks pretty bad.

-Vega’s cr.MP looks good and typically whiffs. And really, it deals minimal damage without V-meter. It’s not gonna win you the matchup unless you have V-meter and super stocked each round.
V-skill at the proper range? Check the startup to V-skill, and then check the startup to her fireballs. I’ve tried it. I get hit out of V-skill before the hit comes out by her fireballs. Not to mention if she jumps over, she’ll get a fat combo.

I didn’t say ia legs was an issue for Vega. I’ve played other Chuns too, and they don’t abuse fireball as much and make the match look OK for Vega.

I’m just not convinced Vega’s tools are usable when she plays a certain way.

For your info, her fastest kikoken is 9 frames, whilst Vega’s V-skill hit is 22. It gives her serious space control.

I agree with af0 the match is shit. Good Chun’s are gonna use IALL correctly so the fact we can anti air it isn’t much help. Good Chun’s don’t spam the move they mix it up between counter hit set ups and throws.

Lets not forget she has EX legs to punish ase, so we cant abuse to chip like in other matches.

That’s true. And if you have a habit of doing HP>ASE you’re gonna end up doing it even against Chun. But that’s a minor concern compared to her fireballs, cr.mp and st.lk.

Besides V-trigger into Super, I can’t think of any advantages Vega has in this matchup. Almost all his tools are shut down.

I use Necalli as a sub, who I only recently started taking seriously. Against Chun, I’ve had more success with him than Vega , who I picked up since the beginning.
I gave up on the matchup with Vega last night, but I thought I’d get some feedback here to see if anyone knows how to really deal with her, if at all possible.

I also did the same against Nash - and I’ve had more success with Necalli.

I can win that match I just go more agressive. I do sub Necalli for Chun though.

Chun-Li is just a better Vega.

Yep. She’s also as fast, gets damage of hit confirms, can cancel her pokes, has a fireball AND a get off me move. I’m thinking about a pocket Chun.

Chun is a better everyone. Bitch has everything.

Fuck that bitch. I’ll never use Chun-Li. I don’t care how good she is.

I might use her for giggles, but the real deal is that Laura story alt… Bonita!

I think Chun will get nerfed in a patch or two if we see consistent results from her in tourney.

The only advantages I can think of that Vega has is better range and that nuclear damage when he’s fully stocked.

Chun hasn’t won anything yet, and even if she did, Capcom promised they would only make adjustments other than bugs o very broken stuff once every year, once the competitive season was over.

Don’t count on nerfs, rely on your mindset.

Mained Dictator in SF4, who had Guile as a bad matchup. To deal with booms, you had to guess, plain and simple.

Perhaps some tech will be found out for the Vega/Chun match, but until then, you’re gonna have to learn how to read your opponent to make an “educated” guess to deal with her FBs and pokes.

Counter picking is fine too.
