It’s pretty debatable when it comes to Cammy, Mika, Ken and Laura.
To be honest unless I’m THAT much better than the other person I try to keep the game away from the corner as much as possible. Especially against characters like Ken and Mika who can corner us from damn near mid-stage, it just doesn’t seem worth it as Vega’s corner pressure doesn’t seem to be anything special.
I understand he’s supposed to be weak under pressure, but if you’re cornered and the other play is even remotely competent it’s GG. Realizing where you are in the stage seems to be more important for Vega than any other character imo.
You’re maybe already aware of this, but Vega’s V-Skill is extremely useful againt Mika. I don’t think the MU is in Vega’s favor because you’re likely to get blown up as soon as you’re cornered and/or if she gets in, but you can delay the wreckage and frustrate them if you manage to outspace them long enough.
st MP pokes, cr HP AA or jump back MK for AA (even if it trades, as long as she doesn’t get in you’re winning) are useful, but the V-Skill is excellent against here main “horizontal approach” tool which is roundhouse. Many Mikas use HK to get in. You can react with your own st HK of course, but V-Skill is great against that important button.
Also, and this was a Week One “strat”, you can V-Trigger as soon as she grabs the mic and punish. (But they don’t do it anymore)
Finally if you’re cornered, the best way to escape is st LK > cr LP or cr MP (depending) on the stance, then (EX) FBA to get out of the corner (but I think they can punish you with their own VT if they pay attention, you’d still end up not cornered so it’s not that bad)
I don’t know what far range normals he’s referring to. What I know is that f+HP is highly unreliable. It’s slow, and most importantly, it’s punishable when blocked, even from long range. It *appears * as being safe but most characters can jab you on the recovery, even if Vega seems so far away. I’m not sure many non-Vega players figured this out yet though.
Claw mode st MP is great, but I suppose that’s the “strong midrange” part of the sentence.
They do mention the punish though. So they’re well aware. Maybe his v-trigger is a solid long range tool, but that’s once a round.
I’ve been thinking about doing tech combo more just to build v-skill faster…meaby it is worth it…about buster claw…from max range (when pretty much only the tip of the claw touches the opponent) is safe on block…it would be kinda pointless to try to space it…you will have your back against the back of the screen just to make it safe…i mostly use it when i feel the opp is going to use a special that moves them fordward…like Karim’s razenka…
A question…do any of you guys is able to consistently use HP Ase as a Anti air?..the only one i remember landing it somewhat consistently was Myakyo…but that was back in the beta days…meaby it was nerfed cause it is insanely slow (prima guida has it listed as 12 frames start up but i can’t believed…st HK is suposed to be 11 frames and is a lot esier to land)
You do do preemptively in your weak anti air zone.I do it sometimes after a s.mp close since people seem to want to jump at me after. You can’t do it consistently in a match when you are focused on the ground game as well as whatever options your opponent has.
I noticed that Vega’s V-Reversal (the punch version) is surprisingly effective against Alex’s Sledgehammer move. Maybe it’s just me, but I have a feeling that Alex might be one of Vega’s easier match-ups (I could be wrong, though).
^ too early to tell…even the good Alex players are still getting the hang on it…that been said i am also doing well against him for the most part…his normals are very rangy but their are kinda slow and don’t leave him at a lot of advantage
On another note i ran into a jab happy Gief again and i got fairly outclassed…i didn’t even felt like he was trolling me…that was just the way the match up is played by a Gief player…
Gief’s clp outranges pretty much anything vega has except Buster claw which is very risky and has a slow start up and clawed st mp that is too slow and doesn’t leave me at any kind of advantage…
i though mp ase would do the trick but doesn’t reach far enough from outside of his c lp range and if you are closer he just mashes lp and beats it…
he wasn’t really spamming the jab just reacting to pretty much anything i did with it…
you can’t also jump on him cause st lp beats anything you do in the air…I was able to bait him into jabing by doing the shimmy and crouching right outside of his range but i can’t really punish a missed jab…any idea would be apreciatted cause this is a bit perplexing…Gief should not be able to zone out vega it is just not right
What about f.HP or Slide on reaction to his whiffed jabs. Otherwise, s.MP during recovery frames.
What about f.HP or Slide on reaction to his whiffed jabs. Otherwise, s.MP during recovery frames.
slide is kinda slow to react a whiffed jab, you have to have godlike reactions. And it’s pretty damn risky if they block, you will eat a SPD and than a mix up. On gief match up I think slide should be used only to punish whiffed SPDs and you are too far for a proper punish
Gief c.LP is 4 frames of start up and +3 on block. It also has the same range as our s.MP so we can’t challenge that move with it because of it having 8 frames of start up.
There is no way in on Gief. He can punish a perfectly spaced l.CT with c.LP. BC is too slow and gets hit by c.LP on block. Can’t slide. Can’t jump. Can’t out range with normals. That’s just against c.LP and blocking. Throw in armor moves, AA, air SPD, and I really think this match is 7 - 3 Gief. Good thing is, once we’re in, he has a hard time keeping us off and his jump is really slow so A2A keeps him in the corner.
At high levels it’s going to be a hellish match. Vegas only needs make one mistake and he’s done. Gief has a ton of health and can turtle all day not giving a fuck.
@“vagabond zero” claw s.MP is +1 on block so opens up c.LP frame trap and +6 on hit so you can walk forward c.LK or c.LP pressure again. s.LK is +2 on block and gives you frame tap pressure with c.LP, which you can cancel into roll on hit, or ex.ASE, or ex.FBA. Gief has nothing to challenge our frame traps with, except maybe v.skill and v.trigger.
So Laura is almost as bad as Mika. I’m tired of all this set play nonsense. Why do I have to play fucking perfectly and the other person has to get some random jump in or ex elbow one time to win the fucking match?
Well i played again against jab happy gief and i beat him for the first time…i still lost the set 2-1but he is ranked a lot higher than me so i take it as a feather on my cap…
as i commented before it was easy to bate the jab so i did that and jumped in every time…and my JHP and his jab traded like 4 times in a row untill the guy seemed to notice that he was getting the worst part of it then he changed for the shoulder move…but after that i started to cross up on him easier…
As Moonchilde commented clawed st mp started to become useful once i finded the sweet range and stopped been so predictable…finally when he started losing the footsie battle he became jumpy and then i blew him away with st HK…
I mean the lesson was…he was beating me to the punch every time because i was very predictible…once i started changing my tempo and mixing up my strikes it started to look much better…sadly i lost my cool in the last match and made lots of mistakes…
He can lariat Vega jumps, he can probably use a kick button as well and probably soak it up with charge punch or v.skill armor the jump in attempt and pop is with the hit on recovery. IMO that player probably wasn’t familiar with the match. Once a Gief starts using his armor to nullify Vega pokes the match gets much harder.
Damn…just checked it out…lariat is upper boody invincible from frames 1-11…guess he should have done that…after the 3 first frames Gief’s head becomes vulnerable according to prima guide…i don’t know what this means…you can punish a wiffed lariat with a jump in?..any way…yeah…i though i had the number of Gief and Laura but as i encounter better players things apperat to be not so shinny
I always have a rough time facing this guy. This time I adjusted some stuff of my gameplay, changed the timing of pokes and jump ins. After the matches he told me he has done everything wrong and said he played badly… well, okay, i’ve seen better performances of him, but these matches ilustrate how great zangief lp is really good against vega
@“vagabond zero” yes after he whiffs lariat you can jump on him or hit him low.
Anyone else feel like Alex gets to full screen j.HK on Vega for free? I’m starting to really hate this match. He completely out ranges Vega and I can’t seem to punish anything of his on block.
Hey Mr. Jack that is exactly the Gief player i was talking about…i run into him often in casuals…amazing…such an small world
