Vega Combos & Glitches

Thanks Deuy, I was looking to change it up after stunning my opp. Kinda tired of the ol’ focus attack to airthrow haha.

I remember hearing someone say that in some circumstances, Spendid Claw fails to hit Zangief’s lariat.

Here’s the glitch captured on video (happened in a real game):

Another crap-tastic miss with Ultra 1 recorded by someone else

Kick lariat has no low hitboxes

Yeah I see now… changing the name of my video, thx.

What is Vega’s best combo starting with his C.MP? His C.MK? S.LK?

C.MP xx EX Scarlet (on some characters)/EX Barcelona on the rest. Maybe C.MP xx RCF FADC S.HK? I’ll have to test
C.MK, C.MP, EX Barcelona
S.LK <- if you mean far standing LK you can link two and do crouching HP for a decent combo

This seems like the appropriate place to talk about something I’ve been using a a lot lately.
*This is not a new or ground braking idea just thoughts on old tricks. *

It all started since w/ Bison and his scissor kick pressure. I’ve been playing bison a lot lately and I started to thinking about doing the same thing with Vega except w/ RCF instead.

Using weak RCF after cr.MP allows you enough time to charge another RCF but following up w/ another one doesn’t always work out. But if you throw out a cr.LP then cr.MP you can do it again. The cr.LP comes out so quick it stuffs alot of moves that the opponent would be doing.

It does of course lose to anything with invul frames, like EX moves or DPs but it allows Vega to keep the pressure on. If you mix it up and bait moves out of them they really end up taking alot more damage then simply just taking the chip. Mixing in an MP or even FP RCF or an EX one also adds to the pressure.

If you incorporate this with Vegas new overhead you can really play an almost rush down style of play and what I like about Vega more than Bison is that Vega has that nasty air throw. So once a player is in the corner you can really keep them there.

For example:
They start blocking your initial RCF pressure then try to get wise but you wait just a moment before committing and they get hit. Next time they just block hoping to catch you during recover on one of the RCF or pokes but they are duck blocking because you start with cr.LK this is when you throw out the over head.
*you have to be careful about the overhead and following it up as many times you will be hit if you try any thing unless your spacing is on. Even if it isn’t and you land it you can still apply pressure because they just got hit and could be thinking about a throw or a special or (god…lol) an Ultra.

Hopefully they…jump and since you are expecting it you can easily air throw them.

Then basically rinse and repeat.

Obviously this is a simplified version and a best case scenario but it is the basic idea. With Vega’s overhead his ability to pressure the opponent has really grown and the RCF pressure is solid - not as solid as Bison scissor kicks - but it is a really great tool that I’ve been having success with on some decent players.

On a side note, the only reason I though of playing Vega like Bison was because I started playing Bison more. Its interesting the strategies and options you think of for your main character when you play other characters that seemingly have no or little connection.

In any case, when I get the chance I’ll post up some vids so people can see it in action.

So is C.MP/C.MK, H ST even worth using? I thought it had good damage.

Well you asked what the best combo was starting with c.MK, and it is: c.MK, c.MP xx EX Barcelona. But if you don’t have meter, then c.MP/c.MK xx HK ST is good if you have charge and c.MK, s.HK if you don’t.

This pressure strategy has been thrown away for a long time now for a reason. The weak point of these strings is not as you mentioned after the RCF but after the poke that cancels into RCF (MP or LP doesn’t make a difference btw, they both come out in 4F). I’m sure you know why: the startup of the roll is simply too slow. That’s where it gets beaten by simple normals, such as Ryu’s c.MP. And this is the reason why it doesn’t make for a good repetitive pressure tool.
You don’t even need invulnerability to break this string. Now this is all dependent of range, but at most ranges RCF gets swept out of, cr.MP’d out of, thrown out of or jabbed out of on startup. There are only very, very few ranges (and those are hard to guess) where you can beat those normals with the RCF. Those leave a small enough margin for the normal to start up, but not to go into active frames. Basically a frame trap.
If you’re playing Ryu, all you have to do is mash on the appropriate normal depending on the range (cr.MP is more like a universal option) after you blocked Vega’s normal that will cancel into RCF. If Vega doesn’t cancel, your cr.MP doesn’t come out. If Vega is too close, his cr.MP -> lp RCF becomes a real blockstring and Ryu’s cr.MP won’t come out either. If Vega is not at just the exact range cr.MP will come out before RCF starts up and beat Vega out of it. Decent Ryu players could even combo into sweep after this. So I really wouldn’t recommend using it as a pressure tactic. Vega is no Bison!

BUT! Once in a while, canceling cr.MP into a Fierce or MP RCF pushes your opponent into the corner. Use it very sparingly though!

I agree with Sasaki, I still do it every now and then just to get some pressure, but the rcf leaves u way to far for the cr.mpxx rcf to really be effective. You end up getting hit by random moves when trying to lock them down. It does work on some people, but no where near as effective as bisons scissors. Maybe if the lp rcf left us a lot closer, we could maybe apply some better pressure, but it puts us far enough to where the opponent has enough time to counter or avoid the cr. lp/mp. But yes following up with the overhead works nicely since it is pretty quick and has a lot of range.

I agree with your assessment overall Sasaki.

I did run into this problem when starting to try this out with Vega. But I was determined to make it work and I just backed off when I saw that it was going to be unsafe and just used pokes like cr.MP or cr.MK sparingly. From here I would sometimes wait for the inevitable jump or use his overhead.

It of course is no where near as good as Bison SK pressure but just like I was determined to make Izuna drop good when vanilla first came out I am determined to make this good with Vega. I’ve still got many kinks to work out but it feels very promising.

Thanks for the feedback.

Can you combo off of a PoM? If so, how?

You can’t. On hit, the frame advantage is 0.

cr.mk will combo into lp rcf better than cr.mp.

Of course, the start-up on cr.mk is shit, only 1 frame better than lp. RCF.

So, you forget that its an amazing poke, it eats pokes like Bison’s st.hk, Chuns st.hk/st.hp, has amazing reach, and leads to an untechable knock down.

FA lv.3, FA lv.1, EX ST is another useless one for the books (sorry if it’s already been mentioned)

RCF-> ST
RCF->EX WD

Rarely do ppl continue block after RCF, most will either try to punish or jump away. Both will work whether they block the RCF or not.

Can you link any combos from RCF? How about…

ex.RCF -> xx s.HK?

Can anyone elaborate or give tips on doing cosmic heel into scarlet terror?

I feel this is a big hurdle my Vega game is seriously lacking. Im fine most of the time landing ex barcelona combos but when Im caught without a stock Im limited to weaker 2in1s.

I’ve sat in training mode trying to pull this off with no luck. So if I can get some tips that would be great.

Thanks.
