Vega (Claw) Thread

Try watching this.

It’s ST but you might find something to help you.
I have very little knowledge of the matchup tbh.

I was doing that much all wrong, now I know what attacks I should use…thanks mate I’d rep you if I could:party:

Hi all. I have been playing hd remix competitively for about a week. I am however not new to street fighter as I’ve been playing it for 17 years. However, I have just recently gotten into competitive street fighter seeing as how I have no local competition and console fighting games are just recently getting online to a respectable level.

Anyway, I decided to pick up vega. I’ve learned the utility of his moveset by watching all the videos on youtube of ARG. I was wondering if there are any other vegas I should be watching on you tube? Also I am able to pull off every combo ARG does except the roundhouse backflip into another roundhouse backflip. The timing on that combo is completely alluding me. Is there any advice on the timing, I realize I should be buffering the second one as fast as I can after the first one is input, but I can’t even get the second flipkick to go off.

Also I was wondering if any of you play vanilla super turbo on ggpo? I was thinking about playing with vega on that since all the videos I watch on youtube are of vanilla st. This may not be the right forum for that question, but it’s just a sidenote to the other things I said.

/end scrubby wall of text

I’ve been using Vega just for fun lately. I’m liking his emphasis on his crouching normals to dominate, really makes the technical side of things easier. All I need to do now is master his Wall Dive and I may just have my second competent character to use!

For double flipkick:

If you’re charging as soon as you do the move you should always have time to do the second one.
One thing to note though is that flipkick hits quite a bit horistonally so you can actually in most cases let your opponent fall for a little bit before doing the second one and still hit, which might help you since it gives you a bit more time to charge.

Thanks I figured out my problem this morning. Who do you all consider vegas harder match-ups with all hdr patches in place? I personally find dictator to be annoying.

Dictator, Honda, Boxer.

haha honda and dictator are my worst match-ups as I played with vega. I haven’t run into a note worthy boxer yet though. Is there any advice for the honda/dictator match-ups.
It seems like against honda I can’t keep him away and the best options are to jumping heavy punch around or flip kick the flying head butt. I know reversal flip kick is what should be done against the sit on you attack, but I have trouble stopping it.
Against dictator it seems like any wall diving gets shot down and psycho crusher eats a lot of my rolling crystal flashes. Even my pokes can seem to get me in trouble as I will get hit with scissor kicks sometimes.

Against Honda: Jump Back FP is god. Keep holding charge while doing it so you can claw roll if he tries anything besides headbutt.
You can always punish blocked super with c.mp
Crossup Walldives are generally safe since honda loses horisontal charge and if he buttslams you can hit on recovery.

Dict and Boxer i’m still learning.

Here are some observations from a Honda player. Against Honda, there’s a way for you to do a walldive from your own wall that crosses Honda so deeply that he can’t jab headbutt your walldive - that technique alone should help you a lot if you get behind in life.

My suggestion is to mostly turtle as long as you have life advantage (reaction flipkick his headbutts, jumping back attacks stuffs a lot of his options). If somehow you get close to him, jumpkick right behind Honda (often whiffs) -> throw has got me embarrasingly often.

If you try a walldive, always make sure to cross Honda at least once - either by jumping from his wall or crossing him up while you descend - to eat his headbutt charge. That will make Honda use his anti-walldive Plan B: buttslam escape. You can punish LK and MK buttslams with a slide, and I think you can punish HK buttslams with one of the walk-up punches.

Good luck!

Edit: And yeah, that match vs Opemai was pretty epic!

hey I don’t know if this is worth exploring but I was wondering if anyone has tried this. I see ryus shoryu after blocking the first part of hondas super but before the second part. Can vega flip kick after blocking the first part of hondas super but before the second part comes out or is that just too risky?

Yes you can flipkick between the hits! You can also just wait and hit crouching MP if you’re not feeling solid enough. Honda’s super is pretty unsafe overall.

I was wondering if we could make a list of opponents it is intelligent to wall dive a lot and then another list of characters where you have to use wall dive sparingly in hdr? To my knowledge dhalsim, chun, honda you can wall dive a lot against, I am not sure who else it is pretty safe to wall dive against. To my knowledge trying to wall dive a lot against ryu, ken, guile is a bad idea.

The only ones i generally never walldive against are: Boxer, Ken, Blanka.

Intelligent: Chun Li, Zangief, dictator
Necessary: E.Honda, Dhalsim, claw
Careful: everyone else
Dumb: Ken

Add Blanka to the dumb part of that list.

Nope, it’s a useful tool in the Blanka match; pretty sure I already explained that earlier in this topic.

Excuse my ignorance, but could you explain how it is intelligent to perform the wall dive on zangief? To my knowledge that match-up was about staying crouched and using slide when zangief ohh yaas (triple punch), flip kicking when he jumps, and crouching medium or jump ins when he wasn’t doing any of those things. I ask this, because when I try to wall dive on zangief I get ohh yaa’ed (3p) most every time. I guess I’m missing something really important. Also wall dive seems to fail me a lot in the guile match-up. For me personally, poking guile to death is how I am most effective in that match-up. Even when I try to use fake wall dives to bait flash kick it seems flash kick reaches to the moon and hits me somehow.

No you did not.

You simply stated you knew how to walldive safely against blanka and got told that you are wrong by everyone in the thread.

If you somehow have revolutionized the matchup then go ahead and explain just how you go about walldiving against blanka.

If you do the walldive so that the outer edge of the claw hits it’s hard for zangief to counter it but other than that you play the match exactly as i do.

A ground game is useful in all the matches. For Zangief, you need to experiment with the positions. Wall dives are nowhere near as 1-dimensional as people make them out to be. Be warned that it doesn’t work as well against Zangief online; your reflexes have to be on the point and seeing something even a few frames afterwards will make this tactic unusable.

Against Guile, the best Guiles will more often that not successfully flash kick a wall dive on wakeup. You can easily bait flash kicks if you have the distances right (don’t do it in the corner). If you’re really good at timing, you can slash the back of their head on wakeup.

As for Blanka, you clearly didn’t read everything. You just have to find a good time to do it. If you don’t want to heed my suggestion based on playing all the top US Blankas, then go with your own. No loss to me at all. It’s not even a critical weapon anyway. Maybe if you’re lucky, you’ll see me play a Blanka to see how it’s effective when done right.
