The airthrow is too situational in height to initiate a solid set up. Do it like tatsu, taunt every time you caught someone cause there isn’t anything reliable to do afterwards.
As for the forward throw, iirc the is a shoryuken-whiff set up. You have to wait a brief moment do a tiny step forward an jump with ?. All I remember is that is was not practical for me (online only) so I forgot about it. If you care to research yourself, in the vega video thread there was the discussion about it.
You can get a true vortex set up off of focus-crumple, jump-airthrow, immediate LK.FBA
I have difficulty getting the Air Grab off of the focus crumple though, but I might try it if I had no meter, was down in life by a lot, and was up against a decently vortex-able character.
The higher you do the airthrow, the worse the setup works. It really isn’t good without the best off-the-ground airthrow.
…And people think that focus attack> air grab is only for trolling and taunting…i think i’ll try that setup against my friend that mains Sagat…he also has a tendency to eat focus attack…lol
LOL coincidentally, I was doing that to everyone at casuals in my college (FA-Air throw-attempt vortex by whiffing different normals into FBA) because it just looked cool, and it made the room go “WTF?”. Something I wanted to try other than the usual CH > ST. And how weird, I didn’t think it mattered what kind of FBA you had to do. I guess I can try again tomorrow. XD
But then again, if it is not recommended, I might as well do it if I know I have the match won with a small percentage of life and can end the match with an air throw if I want.
i wasnt aware of the vortex setup but even with that and the difficulty in executing… if you cant land it 100% in training i wouldnt even consider this in a real match.
Guys, how would you rank Vega’s anti air options as of AE2012?
I’ve only been playing Vega for a few weeks and this is one of the weakest part of my game with him (not that he excels in that department but anyways).
For obvious jumps I’ve been having good results with st.HK and air throw. I trade most of the times with Scarlet Terror >:( and I don’t think that trade is in our favor (unless followed with EX ST, is it worth the meter btw?)
Checking the hit box images, cr.HP and nj.HK seem like good options but haven’t tried them enough. Am I missing any options besides the ones mentioned (st.HK, air grab, ST)? U2 maybe?
What about the slide? Can it anti air like DJ’s or Blanka’s slide?
Looking forward to your suggestions, I’m really digging Vega and want to level up with him.
I use nj. hk as a preemptive and reactionary anti-air…works really well and most other Vega’s do. St. HK is more preemptive…because it’s pretty slow on reaction and most likely trades or plain out loses. So you should really start using nj. hk a lot more…it comes out very fast and beats all kinds of shit except air tatsu’s…(which you should use preemptive st. hk’s on)
Lk.ST at the top of their jump arc is a good go to AA and u can juggle with EX ST if you have meter. If I don’t have charge i will use st.hk. Don’t forget about air throw.
Unless you anticipate a jump-in and execute Scarlet Terrot as soon as their feet leave the floor. Other than that, don’t do it. At the very best on a good day, EX ST might trade, but it’s a shitty, unadvantaged trade.
i just tried it against a Zangief, he Lariat’d on his wake up and it whiffed, i went smoothly behind him ready to punish… i’ll try to reproduce it in training mode
