P.S. On another note, Thomas/Brian you guys are really great and are already amazing players especially since Brian did take today’s tourney, but I really think you guys should learn how to use sticks for two great reasons.
- It’s annoying changing sticks out.
- More importantly, I’ve seen ppl switch from pads to sticks and double their skill level, no lie. I can’t imagine how much better you guys will be on sticks. So, I’ll make you guys an offer. Since you mainly play on the PS3, and I own 3 ps3 sticks and I never touch my ps3. I’ll lend you guys two sticks to practice on for a few weeks. It’s hard to play on sticks over one day, so I think spending a month with some sticks will help.

Swiss format: Takes everyone initially and randomly pairs them up with ppl to play. After first set of matches. Winners get 2 points, losers get 0 points. Then it pairs ppl of equivalent points together for the 2nd set of matches. Then it does the same thing for 3rd set of matches etc. So a person is always playing some with the same record or as close ya see. You can play as many matches until you just want to stop. We ended up playing 5 matches b/c afterwards we had 8 ppl with the highest amount of points without ties and just advanced those 8 to a double elimination bracket.

Highlights of the match: During swiss rounds, Jacob (Gief) vs his own twin brother John (Fuerte). During Swiss it was best of 5 rounds, 2/3 matches. It had gone the distance. Gief had just landed his bitch ass SPD leaving both players with a shred of energy on the bar. El Fuerte was on the ground, Gief went in for green backhand of death ex style to end it. At the same fucking time, El fuerte executes ultra AND lands it. GG, the luchador wins.

Brian (aka pad warrior) then says fuck you, lands guiles SUPER. . .then links it into the ULTRA for an 11 hit combo. Everyone looks at each other and are amazed that 1. It happened during a match 2. I realize its annoying, and I’ve wanted to try em, but I cant really just pick it up in a few hours, was having trouble just doing a simple fireball motion just the couple times I tried it, though I’m sure I could get good with one if I had time to practice on one. And I know Brians been wanting to use one so yeah.
Anyways that was way fun again. We should try recording some of these matches. I bet if we could show more of the community what kind of skill we got we could get more people around here. Surely there’s more around in hiding that just don’t know about these things.

Ya know, you are right. Swiss is the way to go. Just talked to John and he agrees with you. The problem wasn’t Swiss, the problem was the fact that we were playing best of 5, 2/3 matches which took forever. We could’ve clearlydone just best of 5, 1 match. Next time, if I host, bring that program with you. We’ll never doubt you again.

Teamutahnoobs includes three different people: Bobby, Johnny, and Quang, and they are hosting a tournament at the SLCC campus on Friday, April third. Thanks for helping out the scene, guys!

Swiss Days at Nate’s, 3/26:
(This is a rewrite/synopsis of info previously posted by Andy on what happened as I didn’t make it to the event. Thanks to Andy for details and clarification.)
Increasing our tournament attendance from 11 to 15 this week, Utahns brought equipment, games, and $1 per person to Nate’s house in Sandy last Saturday to throw down and compete. Players started showing at around 6pm, equipment was set up, and the tournament got underway at 10pm. Relative newcomer Matty yoga’d his way to fourth place with Dhalsim, and coming in at a very-familiar third with his solid 'Rog was Kelly the Bronze Boxer. Jacob stayed in the winners bracket the entire time, sending Brian’s Guile to the losers bracket with The Red Cyclone. That day, however, Brian was not content to stay in second place, coming out of losers to beat Jacob and the 'Gief for first, holding his pad, Guile dogtags, and his $14 winnings high for everyone to see. GG to everyone else (Brian’s bro, Thomas, John, Bobby, Johnny, Quang, Mike, Kyle, Zach, Danny, random Emo kid using Ken, and Nathan).
This is the third tournament hosted by Utah players, and the first to use the Swiss format. Players are randomly paired up, then they play their matches. Winners earn 2 points, losers get nothing. Further pairings of players are made, but based on score: 2 pointers play 2 pointers, zeros play zeros. This continues until people want to end it, then those with the highest totals are advanced to a double-elimination bracket. It seems as though there was a warm reception to the format, so it may come into use again further down the Street Fighter road.

Pool Play
- All players will be placed into pools randomly with the intention of the best possible experience.
- All players will play each player in their respective pools with the top players advancing to the bracket portion of the tournament.

Single Elimination Bracket - Rounds will be best of 2/3 5 round matches. Winners (3) will then advance to the next event with a bye of pool play
Controllers - All controllers and settings will be accepted.
- No use of Turbo function.
Characters - All Characters will be unlocked and available for anybody to use.

King of the Cabinet Bonus Tournament - A winner take all format with old school flair. The winner stays on the station the most consecutive wins will take home the prize of the total purse $1.00 opt in.

That’s it for this week. I took Mike’s suggestion and added first names to the list which is a good idea, and now it’s time for more feedback; should this stay a weekly, twice a week…what would work best for everyone. I’m thinking of having a completely separate thread for the player list, due to IT’S EVER INCREASING SIZE which is a good thing, so I would just link to it in the weekly news. Also, what about a list of non-SRK Utah players that have showed up to tournaments, like Spencer and Patrick. Would people like interviews with Utah players? Opinion pieces? Strategy? Matchups? I’ve noticed a lot of talk on custom joysticks…would you like something to read on that? And if anyone wants to write something to include in the UTSF News, I’m all ears. Lemme know!
That was a great turnout guys, 15 people! Wow! I can’t believe that I got there at near 6pm and the tourney didn’t even start until around 10pm…then lasted 'til almost 2am! Andy, if you ever say “the whole tourney will only take an hour” again I’m stuffing you in your trunk LOL
I actually had time this week to play some training mode to polish my combos and play some random people online and it certainly paid off as I beat Mike’s Blanka not once but twice in the tournament and at the last tournament I couldn’t beat him once.
I also made Matt’s Dhalsim afraid to do anything once I got an EX meter, I hope that motivates him to learn that matchup better and keep running once he has a lead, not taking unnecessary risks by playing offense all the time. That’s not Dhalsim’s game! Run and poke, USE that EX meter to stop my EX rushes, don’t save up for the super against Balrog. Also, jumpback right into f+HP is an overhead and it hits from half screen, use it!

I should keep it to myself, but I have to share for those of you who don’t know…Focus Attacks own all but two of Balrog’s rushes (Brian knows this, he gets me all the time when he has an Ultra ready). Those two are the Running Dash Uppercut (cb, df+K) and the Overhead Smash (cb, df+hold P) and both of those rushes are unsafe. I want you guys to know this so that when you play me, you can punish me for dashing too much and I have to find a new way to attack.
While we were waiting for the top 8 brackets to be made, I got a chance to play John’s El Fuerte. This is the first time I’ve ever played a Fuerte player and it was pretty crazy. Everyone watching thought it was a tourney match, the games were intense. We played three games and it came down to the wire. In the end though, my Rog pulled through.
EVO for me is a tossup because I have some things to take care of that could require me being with my family during that time, it is still unknown. Add the fact that I think both of my cars are going to die soon is scaring me lol …I’m keeping the hope alive.
With sticks being so hard to find right now and the price point is way out there for most of us. I think those of us who know how, should help those of us who don’t have sticks, with getting one or making one. Sure, we won’t/can’t do it for free, but we can help you out. Andy already took the first step by allowing Brian and Thomas to borrow two of his sticks so they can get some practice on them. The Bleyl’s also said they will help.

Seriously guys, these tourneys are about improving which is why I’m impressed by Thomas’s Abel and Matty’s Dhalsim, each week they have new tricks and mixups.
Hopefully we can all make EVO, but real life is the priority. Hopefully we can sit down and plan as it’s only 3 months away now. If you really want to go and there’s issues such as lodging or transportation please have a word with me. I’ll try to help.
As far as sticks for EVO:
Kelly is smart enough to point this out that having sticks will be important.
The tourney will be on PS3 for both SF4/HDremix.
Kelly will own 2, I own 3. I’ll be more than happy to lend out two during EVO. The Bleyls, Dana, Andrew are planning on making/purchasing some sticks. I’m planning on making two/three sticks. Dash is planning to buy a stick soon. Zach is getting a stick. Matty has an adapter. . .however I would not use it during EVO b/c if it fails. . .you fail.
My personal knowledge of PS3 sticks: You have a few options.
- HORI Fighting Stick 3: Equivalent of the Hori EX2 for xbox, but you can find it for 40 bucks. HORI stick, HORI buttons
- HRAP 3: 99.99, Sanwa stick, HORI buttons, easy to modify
- Madcatz SE stick: 79.99, Madcatz stick/buttons, easy to modify, hard to find (maybe better in April)
- Madcatz TE stick: 149.99, sanwa everything. Good luck finding at reasonable price.
- VSHG: Yeah right. . .

Yeah, the Balrog matchup had me miffed for the night. Until I get it down I’m going to be relegated to 3rd/4th place at the tournaments unless I get lucky and avoid you in the brackets, which hasn’t happened yet. I have some ideas though. Bait your EX dashes and counter with flames (believe they are armor breaking). Only teleport to run away like the manly man that I am. I really need to stop being so aggressive in every matchup really. I’ve also been studying my Guile matchup since those were some really good games that I fell short in.
Also going to be picking up a second character besides Sim. Spent the free time I had Sunday playing some Abel. We laughed, cried a little, and then wrote in our diary before bedtime. Why must the world be so soulless?
Btw Andy, I can’t help that I’m so sexy. We should at least have a camera on hand to take pictures of me next time. lol
