Utah Thread: Arcade Edition @ GameGrid

That was a great turnout. Thanks for hosting, guys, and letting us drink all your cokes.

Three people maining Zangief is enough to make you talk like Q*Bert.

Thanks to Andy for the ride down, pizza, and all the great sticks he owns.

I’m glad that Dana was able to come over too, it’s been way too long since we’ve played anything together.

It was nice to play Andrew and Spence for the first time, you guys are great players. (Spence uses a pad still…ewwww, we’ll break him of that eventually ^_^)

Oh, ugly ducklings…what were your names again? My memory sucks.

Alright guys, I’m starting to put shit into motion and we have the chance to pull off an amazing event after Evo if we can get some support behind it.

BATTLE AT THE TOP OF UTAH 2009
August 1st (tentative)
Currently looking into hotels instead of arcades/stores as potential hosts.

For a game lineup, I’m thinking…

Street Fighter IV
Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix
Virtua Fighter 5
SoulCalibur IV
BlazBlue (EDIT: Wall just nominated KOFXII for the fifth game via text…thoughts?)

For this year, I’m thinking of making it just a celebration of the local scene and what an incredible thing it has become this year, but with the definite potential to become a major tournament a la ECC, Final Round, etc over the course of a year or two.

Because Logan is very out of the way for most of you, I’ve decided this will be the only Logan event each year, at least until the core playerbase of Cache Valley grows to the point of doing these smaller biweekly/monthly gatherings. It’s also a great atmosphere for tournament play, and served as ground zero for the rebirth of the local scene back in '02.

For this year, let’s celebrate once business time (read: Evo) is over.

What do you say?

It was fun playing at the Triplet’s place last night for real. Thanks to everyone for being cool guys; friendly right off the bat.

So they aren’t providing transportation to Arizona anymore for the tournament… which sucks fat testicles. I’m still going to go down there and open a can of whoop-ass, Sagat style.

Word,

I’m still thinking about get together tonight at my house, but let me take a 2 hr nap plz. I’ll call ppl for details.

had

Yeah man, give me a call. I didn’t get one yesterday : |

And go easy on me, my 360 broke and they won’t fix it. :annoy:

Alright guys,

Gonna have to cancel tonight on you guys. It’s sad b/c I see alot of ppl with interest who want to play tonight but I just got home from hospital at 3 pm and I feel like shit.

Mike, Chase, Kelly, Dillon, Nate, sorry guys, I’ll try to redeem myself this week. I’m just pretty beat right now. Call me with questions, Dillon/Nate I’ll make sure you guys get the breakaway cord.

had

It’s cool Andy, you were so tired last night driving home. That coupled with daylight savings and you going to work at 6am…get some sleep man.

We’ll play another day.

Mike: Why won’t they fix it?

Everyone: Sorry let you guys down today, just so freaking tired. Don’t think I could hold a gathering today.

First off, GG last night at Ugly’s house. Thanks to all who came, and Andrew…I’ll figure out that Vega eventually.

Yet another increase for Utah SF. Up to 23 players that a) I have met or b)have posted here in the forums. Not bad at all, fellas. True, some on here have only posted on the forum and have yet to participate due to scheduling, distance, lack of ride, etc. Just keep checking the forums and find a phone number to call so that you can get involved. PM me or some of the other people on here, or get me through Facebook. I’m Dana Torp there, too. Just tell me that it’s from SRK and it should be good. We want you to be involved, but if you don’t monitor the forums all the time or post much it would be good to have alternate means to reach you.

Round 3 of the GS tournament this week. Good luck, Andrew, Patrick, and coldshadow! Practice up, pick your guy(s), and rock.

Finally, here’s a mechanics question about SFIV: Do you prefer the new system of throw breaks with it’s all-or-nothing damage system, or HDRemix with the all-or-some throw softening? Personally, I’m in favor of the throw-softening system. Makes it less turtle friendly and you always get something out of being aggressive. You should be rewarded just by going for the throw, seeing as how throws don’t really do much damage anyway and you’re risking quite a bit by getting that close to the opponent. Maybe that’s just because I play Guile and I need to be able to dish out as much damage as the system will allow. Whatchoo think, Utah?

I wish we could at least soft land throws but whatever. I really want to get into Chun Li so I might consider trying to main her, she seems fun and won’t get fucked up like Fei Long all the time.

had

no matter what, no matter who…

andy your chun li is good man. blanka as well. well at least against my gief lol.

dana thanks for the utah break downs. its cool to see how the scene is growing here. it makes my crotch grow as well.

pat are there other players up north? if so tell them to post up on srk  i think it may be a little easier to do a tourny in a central location like salt lake or draper. the chance of getting the entire utah base up to logan might be a little tough. salt lake or draper would have a better turnout than draper. this is my opinion, anyone else can correct me if that does not sound accurate.

street fighter 4 seems to have called a lot of old school players back from the dead. we need to see if we can find other players who may not know about srk. if we do set something up we should see about putting up flyers and stuff. i know that making a facebook group might be a good idea as well.

ok so i just started a facebook group for those of us on fb. search it if u didnt get my invite. search Street Fighter: utah players unite!!

I like the throw system in SFIV. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve never been a complainer about throws being cheap, even back in the days of WW…but whether it was throw softening (ST) or throw escapes (3S/SFIV), you have to really be paying attention to get them.

My only complaint about throws in SFIV is the command throws. They come out so fast that if you are doing a jab string and mistime by a frame or two, you will be hit with a command throw. I guess you just have to be careful in your blockstring selection against certain characters because the same thing can happen against a shoryuken character if you mistime your blockstrings…although if ryu catches you like this, he gets a free ultra ;_;

/rant

I’ve actually always hated the throw system in the SF2 games. They made it a little more acceptable when they added the throw softening in ssf2, but imo it still sucked. Don’t get me wrong tho, i’m not one of those players who thinks its cheap to throw or anything but in the older SF2 games I always felt it was too abuseable. I LOVE how they chose to use the SF3 throw escape system. BTW i’m also a guile player and i throw ALOT. Haha.

Thanks, Jacob. I just like to see the list grow, and doing it about once a page or once a week keeps it fresh in people’s minds, plus lets new people see just how far we’ve come, who lives where, and all that.

Yeah, about doing Logan tournaments…the player base is here. It’d just be easier for everyone involved for you to come here, Pat, and I’d love to game with you. Still, get players interested where you live, hold your own get-togethers in Logan, and post what happens! If you were willing to travel to Ogden and Centerville for the GS tournaments, then hook up with Ogden people, and bring the Logan crew there. Asking you to travel to Provo/Orem is a bit much, and asking all of us to get up to Logan is stretching things, but going to SLC…those are central points for most everyone. It sucks that we all don’t live in the SLC area, but that’s just the reality of the situation. I appreciate your desire to help, but I think it’s just too much to ask of people that are just now adjusting to having a real SF scene again. Baby steps.

Glad to see your enthusiasm in SF4 man.

However, I’m with Dana and duckling on this one. We got a load of players in Provo/Orem area, we got load of players in Ogden/Logan area. I think it would be most convenient for the majority to hold a BIG tourney in SLC. SLC is a truly center location for the scene. I don’t mind coming to Logn for small get togethers but I think as far as holding something big SLC should be it. But this is just my opinion. I actually have some great ideas for venues to hold up to 40 ppl or more.

This last weekend was a shitload of fun however I want to see Chase, Danny, Mike, Nate, Dillon there next time, I know some of you had plans and some of you didn’t call me u after I posted, but if we gonna get things bigger and learn off each others characters, you got to come when you can.

Andrew, Spencer nice meeting you two. Pizzas always on me

Hey Ugly Duckling,

I’m in Riverton. Driving wherever won’t be a problem for me. Maybe in the future I could even host if a place is needed, although I only have one TV.

Lordbiff

As long as you have space, chairs, and especially coffee tables or regular tables it’s great. I have a nice little portable lcd tv I can bring.

I guess it’s an unintended side effect of a larger Utah playerbase, though my own logistical situation has been misunderstood, it seems. It was only by chance that Gallows was able to take me down to Ogden and Centerville. As his own situation changes (and he moves down to Ogden himself either just before or just after Evo), I’ll probably once again be stranded out here in Logan, unable to do much of anything offline outside the valley.

At any rate, I planned a Logan tourney for 8/1 all along, whether it’s a big event or just a small gathering, just because there’s a good chance it’ll be my last tournament (health issues) and I’d rather take a bow at a local tourney than a major, actually. The idea of pulling a major came after the GameStop stuff and the resulting boom in the Utah playerbase, but if the location doesn’t work, it can’t be helped.

If anything, I’ll scale it down and do SFIV/STHD/VF5 or something, hold it at LFU or CVFP (although CVFP has changed hands more times than Britney Spears and I have no rapport with the current ownership), and whoever shows up will show up.

Well, it was an idea.
