Utah Thread: Arcade Edition @ GameGrid

I definitely have to say that everyone I met today was really cool. Makes me glad that I decided to get into this. Good times are ahead!

Just got to work guys, kinda fucking tired. We stopped playing at 1:30 am. Fun as hell. Danny finally using a stick (I know you only use a pad for SF4). Focus attacks are the shit. Can’t wait to play some. Good luck at the gamestop tournaments guys.

had

yeah man that was awesome! thanks again had. we’ll try to get a 2nd tv sorted for next time too. i want to try and get something going in provo soon too.

Those were some great games yesterday.

Finally got used to the stick in this game. Glad it didn’t take too long. My Fei and C Viper really helped.
Thanks for hosting Andy.

We should try doing some Marvel some day.

So, which character(s) are you going to use for the GS tournament?

I’m thinking either Ryu or Guile; I’m siding with my past experience with those characters. For most people, the game just came out. The new characters are new for everyone, but when I’m in the middle of a match, I don’t want to have to worry about AP (analysis paralysis) while I’m playing against a stranger, or even John and Jacob’s 'Gief.

But that could mean that someone else is trying as hard as they can to get good with Abel or Gouken, thinking that the novelty will be enough to confuse those that stick with the tried and true, at least long enough to win the match and progress.

Then there’s just the fact that this is all on stock 360 pads, which just hurts everyone, but it seems like it really hurts charge characters.

Thoughts?

I find charge characters not too bad on a pad/analog.
And no one’s able to be Gouken. Unlockable characters are not allowed.

I’d say stick with Guile, and good luck.

I was looking into buying 2 Hori EX2 sticks, but it is sold out everywhere :(.

Yeah most likely they are gonna be sold out most places b/c of SF2 release, like I said, if you need you are more than welcome to borrow my Hori EX2 for awhile. It’s been used like twice. Good stick to learn on for sure. Also, if you need another one, look online man, amazon.com has it for 60 bucks.

had

so i talked to gamestop today, they say rules u have to use orig 360 paddle. that really makes me not even want to play. i hate gamestop with all of my heart. walmarts electronics employees have more videogame knowledge than GS employees.

Yeah, Amazon was the first place I checked. They are sold out. I’ll take you up on your offer to borrow one until I can find one somewhere.

Sounds good man, not sure if I can make it tomorrow because of work, but I’ll try. Oh yah, you bought SF4 yet?

had

Dash and I played quite a while yesterday. I went like 19-21 against him. That C. Viper! And I can’t use focus attacks either

I had a lot of fun because I think we’re different styles–I’m poke / hit-and-run and you’re either psycho aggressive or defensive.

My opinion: if you are a turtle guy go Guile or Dhalsim. Otherwise Sakura/Viper/Fei Long as aggressive. But don’t turtle with Sak! She’s not for turtling.

Anyway, Dash doesn’t always play the same character and neither do I, so hit is up for some matches. Good times.

Once the tournament is over, win or lose, I’m going to get a 2nd and a 3rd character going. Everyone having different 1st, 2nd, and 3rd characters would be great for getting a good feel on the matchups, but I know you can only play with the character(s) that feel good to you. Maybe I’ll have Ken as a 2nd, just for Dash. :bgrin:

Pre-tournament jitters, anyone? I stayed up until 2am practicing moves and combos with Guile on the pad. I actually feel pretty good about it; my execution is not as natural as I would like, but that’s life. Like you, etelmik, I need to FA and FADC more; I’m still playing the game like it’s ST 2.0, and that’s just less effective. Nothing to do about it now, though.

I love tournaments; even bad ones. There’s just something about the competition, the in-person old-school arcade-style competition, that really helps me focus my game and makes the winning AND losing worthwhile. Apart from that, just like last Thursday, I’ll be meeting others with a real love for the game, hopefully swelling our numbers with more quality people.

I still can’t say enough about how impressed I was with everyone at Andy’s house the other night. Good people, good skills, good sticks, good food, and a genuine love for SF.

Good times! Good luck to everyone in the tournament!

I did better than I thought – 2nd place, which is enough to send me to the next round in…store #985, in West Jordan, UT, Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2pm again.

I met a lot of good people ; I hope that they sign in and join up. Let’s see…there was Mike (good 'Gief), Drew (nice Abel), Andrew (good Sagat and the winner), James (trying out the Bison), Xavier, Sean (good for his first time even playing the game!) and Jorge. And of course, Troy…man, sorry we didn’t talk more, but thanks for coming out and giving it a shot.

GS put on a good tournament. The seedings went in the order of the sign-in sheet, as I had thought, but many didn’t show so a few people got automatic byes, some played a 1st round game, and I think one guy got 2 byes. They ran it pretty well, best 3/5, SINGLE ELIMINATION. That threw me; no pressure! I played Mike’s Gief first, and Sean’s Ryu, then Andrew’s Sagat. Bleyls, thanks for the Gief practice. It definitely helped.

Man, I’m still jittery. Gotta keep practicing for Round 2!

Anyone going to Lordluxun at 6 pm tonight?

had

That was a pretty fun tournament. Pretty laid back. It was over quick too. Under 45 mins! I did better than I thought I would. I beat someone! Haha. Considering I haven’t touched the game, never used an xbox controller, etc.

Sorry I left right after the tourney. I had a tight schedule and had to run. You had a great Guile Dana I was rooting for you. That Andrew guy playing Sagat was pretty good man. There were some people pulling off combos and ultras and focus attacks and stuff. It was crazy. I was just lucky against the first guy I played. I think he was hindered by the controller too.

Good luck in round 2!

I can’t go to LordLuxun’s house tonight, unfortunately. I used up my extracurricular SF time on Thursday and today with the tournament.

Sometime this week (before Round 2) I’d like to do something else, though. Get in some practice, especially on pad…

My brother, Utahsbowser, DRyu, Dash, and several more people not on SRK are all here right now, and should be here for a while. Just in case anybody is wondering how many people would be here if they came. 3 TVs between SF4 and HDR, Marvel or 3S on my new PC.

Shit, how many LARGE sized TV’s you got? You need me to bring my xbox or anything pal? Me and Mike might roll by.

had

Looks like we’re coming by, but Hado said Luxun’s address is on here and it’s not. He’s like “get the address I gotta get changed dude” and I’m like “uh, there’s no address here.”

So you know, whatever, give Andy a call at his number or give me a call at 833-6372 and let us know how to get there. See you by 7:30.
