I’m really not sure who I’ll play on SC2. Could be X, could be Yun, could be Assassin…hell, could even be Ivy. But I guess that’s why we should throw down some practice sessions (and frankly rid me of all this rust).
Oh yeah, what are the prizes, I’m assuming all the money is going into a pot?
Not all, but a vast majority (80%). Everywhere we run tournaments, the house takes a 20% cut off the top because A) they don’t really have machines to establish the community yet, and/or B) there’s a bigger house that gets a cut of all money to change hands (which is the case with Cache Valley Mall and Fun Unlimited). I wouldn’t hold the tournament if I found the house cut to be excessive; I pulled the plug on a semi-major back in October 2002 because the house wanted 50% and I wasn’t willing to let ECC5-2 happen.
Here are the splits based on turnout.
6 or less: Winner take all (80-0-0)
7-9 players: 40-25-15
10-19 players: 50-20-10
20+ players: 60-15-5
So as you can see, I did some math to come to these figures. Here are the guidelines I went by.
Rule #1: Maximize the 1st prize as far as it’ll go realistically.
Rule #2: If there is a 2nd prize, it must be notably more than the entry fee.
Rule #3: If there is a 3rd prize, they must at least break even while maintaining a solid prize differential between 1-2-3.
Rule #4: If it’s possible for the top three to all get prizes under rules 1-3, I will not go winner-take-all.
Thanks Pat! See you all tomorrow!

HaHa, good job ernie, i didn’t expect any less, you rule man. Okay guys, i apologise for not getting out there yesterday, there was NO way for me to get there due to working and i had no ride that was willing, i tried my hardest to get up there but it just wasn’t happening, afew arguments didn’t help either. But Pat here is my deal, i am going to be out of town from the 26th to the 31st. Now, i am definately up for some super 2 turbo, i will do anything to get to that tournament on the 23rd, but i also still want to bust some classic CVS2, i am dieing to play. So i was wondering, on the 23rd, is there a chance we could throw CVS2 in by any chance and have an all out 2D fighters tournament? Remember, i’ll do anything to make it possible.
Sorry about not being in touch for the last few days, but i have been looking over the board.
So what do you think Pat, everyone else?
thanks guys,
Seth White
One more thing, i am totally up for some Alpha 3 in August aswell. The three games i love are CVS2/A3/and Super 2 Turbo. Another thing, if i go, i will be bringing spencer devine, and believe me, he can put up a good match in these games aswell. Thanks again.
Seth White
Seth, if I have CvS2 in-hand on or by Friday, I’d be glad to throw it into the mix for the FUNatics tournament on the 23rd. Any later, and I’d have to slide it down to one of the pre-Evo battles (but if I had copies of it, I’d plan to have it at one of those anyway).
Oh, one piece of news I forgot to mention last night! I have finalized the date and time of a pre-Evo battle. Utah’s first pre-Evo battle will be at Fun Unlimited in Logan at 11 AM on the 30th, with games TBA. I’ll get right on the lineup, though. I intend for Fun Unlimited’s battle to be a little more 2D-slanted, and for FUNatics’ battle (not confirmed, but planning for August 6th) to be a little more 3D-slanted.
Fun Unlimited: There will be five games. There will be Super Turbo and 3rd Strike, and probably one or two 3D fighters, including Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution. Other than that, CvS2 (if you come through with copies), Alpha 3, SoulCalibur II, and/or Tekken 5 or Tag could round things out.
Locks: ST, 3S, VF4E (two open spots)
Possibilities: CvS2, A3, SC2, T5
FUNatics: There will be four games tops because there’s only one TV there. Tekken Tag will most likely (even certainly) be there, and 5 is a possibility. There’s an outside chance of Marvel but I wouldn’t bet on it.
Locks: ST, SC2, TTT (one open spot)
Possibilities: 3S, CvS2, T5
I’ll finalize the Fun Unlimited game lineup on the 9th, and flyers should go out a day later. In the meantime, discuss.
Also, just to be clear on the 3S team battle last night…it was in no way meant to ignite a “war” of sorts (even though Ernie went in with that mindset and it served him well), or create any bad blood among players. Team Portland/School of Bob were cool mofos who we’d love to have down here again sometime.
I got the idea when Joey Geurts was over here last week. He said his brother would be down here for the Fun Unlimited tournament and wanted the best players we could get to make it there too (leading to my “sounds like a challenge” comment). Joey and I both decided it’d be cool if Mike could get some other guys to come with him, and thus the seed was planted for a team battle.
First off, Utah had something to prove, and I’ll certainly admit to some measure of opportunism. Really, we’ve had something to prove for quite some time, but up to this point, our bad luck with getting to Evo has made it difficult (actually, it took away all our opportunities) to flat-out test it against other regions. Having a Portland group drive down was a chance for Utah to see how it stacked up against another region. Joey’s Utah all the way now, but the group battle gave him a chance to rep his home town, and Mike was able to bring down a really solid player in Jackson Scott to round out their lineup. Guys, if you’re reading this, good games, good luck up in the Northwest division, hopefully we can set up a rematch sometime after Evo.
That said, though I will give the proper congratulations and respect, I’m not about to downplay what this means for the state. We’ve needed this for far too long to just ignore it now that we have it. It’s like Ernie said on the way out of the mall, “It’s all about Utah, baby.” We are a 3rd Strike state. We have Ernie, Nate, Samson, me, Joey, Tony when he develops his game better (yesterday marked some great progress for him though), and many others who couldn’t make it to this tournament for whatever reason (Dan Silver, Tyler Pendleton, Bleyls, and so on).
So now we have a better idea of where we stand, let’s use the rest of this summer to further sharpen up our game at our pre-Evo battles and kick some global ass at Evolution. Good games and extra fuckin yahoos to our friends up in Portland for coming down to Utah and holding it down, congrats to Jackson, Tony (those last SC2 series were just hellish, bro), and Ernie on their wins…let’s just keep it rolling, guys.
Hey Pat, okay, i’ll be able to make it to the 23rd Funatics tournament, i’ll get two copies of CVS2 sent to you before Friday. I am not sure if i will be able to leave the copies of CVS2 with you for the Fun Unlimited tournament on the 30th though, due to the fact that one of the copies won’t be mine.
So here is what i am doing, i’ll be at the 23rd tournament (funatics) but i sadly won’t be able to make it to the 30th tournament due to the fact that i will be attending the World Yo-Yo Contest in Orlando.
How does that sound Pat?
Seth White
P.S. Get ready for some serious CVS2 action, Spencer Devine and Seth White will bring it, and ernie, i want you too man, i need some revenge, haha.
Sounds good, but what about the pre-Evo battles? Would you mind us holding onto your copy for that one (we’ll only need one, it’s FUNatics and they aren’t set up for two TVs)?
Big shout out to Pat for makin the tourney, it was fun man, nice to meet you and Tony.
Good job to Nate, fuckin Oro! I’m still going to work on my Dudley, I want him to be my top character.
Portland dudes- Cool guys, but I have to admit they acted real silly while they played but it was all good and fun.
I’m down with all 2D fighters, but 3S will always be my main game.
Looking forward to the next turnout, hopefully more dudes will show up, see ya! :china:
Jackpot.
Apparently Utah has landed Dohee for the summer.
Our Tekken scene is going to be incredible now. Expect to see T5 at any tournaments I can sneak it into.
ARGH!!! I can’t believe it, just when i though i would be able to attend the funatics tournament, a VERY important LDS mission farewell pops up. Sorry guys, i am going to have to bail on tournaments for the rest of this month, however, pre-evo tournaments are calling my name. Pat, let me know when you want me to send you a copy of CVS2 since i won’t be attending any july tournaments now.
Please don’t leave me out of the scene guys, i really want to be there, but unexpected things pop up at unexpected times, sorry again.
Thanks for everything Pat, you RULE!!!
Seth White
Whenever you can send them, bro. The sooner I get CvS2, the sooner I can start running tournaments and getting our players ranked.
Good job guys, I’m proud of you. I’m well pleased with the outcome of the other day. You guys are cool, you know that Street Fighter, above all else, is ment to entertain. I came down to the honey comb state for some good fightin’ and some laughs, and I got both. Portland is at no lack of trees, liberals, or dorky Street Fighter players who have no fun. I’ll be at the arcade for about an hour, playing all sorts of guys, but very rarley does one crack even a smirk when I growl and stomp (And grumble, salute, pound, jump, boast, jeer, rube…). I had a load of fun with you kids, good luck at your other tournaments and junk, have fun!
damn sounds like we missed out on some fun. anyways, is anyone around the slc area down for some street fighter action this weekend? we could probably do it at my place seing as i got sticks and all that good stuff. i also have just about every fighter you can think of. oh yeah and ernie next time you come up just burn the data for rival schools on a disk and ill see what i can do with it. also feilong where are you from?? hit me back guys - actually don’t bother, ill just parry that shit. haha
I’m done with my weekend classes, so this Fri. or Sat. I’m free to hang out. What’s your cell? I’ll PM you mine, I’m at work right now, heh, but yeah, let’s do somethin!
Edit: Oh yeah, Ernest, Nate, you guys interested in goin there?
American-Muscle: Are you Jackson or Mike? Either way, good games and we’re glad you enjoyed it. :karate: Looking forward to the next 3S gathering with you guys. You hold it down pretty well on Tekken, too. You guys have friends and rivals down here in Utah now, and I’m sure we’ll all be better players in the long run for it.
UD: I’ll probably be down for some of those weekend get-togethers in SLC after Evolution. I’ll have my license and I’m sure there’ll be a bit of a local “cooling off” period in the wake of it all as far as tournaments go. Think you can be at either of our pre-Evo battles?
Samson: Hell yeah, bet that’s a relief. BTW, is there any chance that you could swing up to Logan before you head down to Evo if Tony and I need a ride? Chances are we won’t - I’m in drivers ed right now and should be able to transport any Logan players that need it, but it never hurts to have a plan B in case I scrub out on one of the written tests or my car breaks down or something janky like that.
Also, I’ve been considering the possibility of “the convoy”. I’m sure there’ll be multiple cars heading out of Utah for Evo, and maybe we could centralize that by throwing a last-minute practice session somewhere in the state that Wednesday night, then we all head out together Thursday morning. That way, if one of us had car trouble or something, we could get help from other Team Utah guys rather than some random hick on I-15 who might take out a shotgun and rob our shit.
Anyway, right now it looks like I’ll be taking one car and Samson will be taking another. If anyone else is driving down, let us know so we can organize this and decide who rides with who, if you guys are down with that.
A convoy idea sounds good, never know what will happen with them random hicks and all~
If you guys need a ride at the end, there’s a good chance I can hook you up.
