Utah: Huge Developments

FUNatics tournament is in just over three hours now!

After this weekend, I should finally be able to announce the time for the Fun Unlimited tournament, too. I already know how it’s looking to break down, though: T5 at noon, SC2 when T5 finishes up, then a short break for food and shit, and finally 3S at 6 PM. Nothing’s certain, but those are the times we’re looking at.

FUNatics 6/25 results:

Tekken 5:

  1. Stephen Mace
  2. Joey Geurts
  3. Patrick Mifflin
  4. Tony Stockseth
  5. Alex Pritchett
  6. David Hendel

Tekken Tag:

  1. Joey Geurts
  2. Alex Pritchett
  3. Patrick Mifflin
  4. David Hendel

APEX points will be distributed as soon as MrWizard adds FUNatics to the system.

Congrats everyone. How many entries were there?

Everyone who participated is listed. I was counting on some out-of-town presence that just wasn’t there. This was an all-Logan show, but a hell of a lot better than I would’ve expected from just Cache Valley players.

Hopefully we stay strong through next weekend’s T5/SC2/3S, and get some out-of-town players involved at the same time. I guarantee we’ll produce division leaders in both APEX games (T5/3S) there if we can get people turn out for it.

Speaking of which: Stephen Mace is the new Pacific North Champion for Tekken 5 as soon as FUNatics is added to APEX. The tournament was worth 600 points, which puts him over Ricky Ortiz (400 points) for the current Tekken 5 title.

Teh. I feel like I’m, bein underestimated by all of ya’ll. It seems like you don’t realize what will soon come & consume your souls!!!
you may have ya’ll Yamazaki’s, Dudlies, & Feng Wei’s, But my Dan & my Ken rules all no matter what! There’s a storm a brewin & I’m creatin that bitch!

You gonna be here for the T5/SC2/3S this Saturday, Ernie?

He better show with all of his self hyping. :nunchuck:

Oh, he’s good, I can vouch for that much. The only thing that sucks is that college killed my 3S skill when I was pretty close to keeping up with him a couple years ago. :frowning: I’m gonna try to get myself back into competitive form in time for Evo, and maybe some more matches against Ernie will speed the process up a bit.

Fun Unlimited Tournament goes official!

Aight, here’s the breakdown…

This Saturday, Logan Fun Unlimited…

Tekken 5 APEX starts at noon. We’ll start showing up at around 11 to kick off registration.
SoulCalibur II starts right after Tekken 5 ends.
We’ll take a break after SoulCalibur II until 6 PM (there you go Samson) when we kick off 3rd Strike APEX.

We’re banning Heihachi, Necrid, and Charade for SoulCalibur II for sure. If anyone wants to save Lizardman, Assassin, and Berserker, bring a memory card with all three unlocked, since I’m not sure we’ll have that by then (it’s probably up to Tony Stockseth). It’ll be all or nothing; if we have no Lizardman, then we’ll have no Assassin/Berserker, either.

Memory cards are allowed for Tekken 5, just like at FUNatics last weekend. Makes things so much easier for match videos…

The level of competition that will likely be there for 3rd Strike will make the whole thing worth attending, trust me. All the best 3S players in Utah seem to be trying to make the trip, so if you want to see how you stack up, Fun Unlimited will be the place to be this weekend.

Thanks man

Another thing I want to note.

This upcoming Saturday is when this huge annual parade/car show goes down in Logan. The parade goes right down Main Street in the afternoon, making traffic an absolute bitch. Now, this won’t be a problem for anyone who gets into town for the start of the event at noon, but if you arrive in Logan between around 4 and 7 PM (Samson and anyone else who’s coming strictly for 3S), it can be a problem.

Solution: Get your shit over to 200 E as soon as you can after arriving in Logan. Ride it north all the way to the mall. Avoid Main Street as much as possible in the afternoon. It will be very difficult to get across during that time.

BTW, just got off the phone with Joey Geurts (from last weekend’s Tekken gathering). Looks like Oregon will have some representation at 3S, and the player (players?) in question, Joey’s brother and anyone he brings along, wants Utah’s best to turn out. Sure sounds like a challenge to me. How about you guys? Ernie? Samson? :nunchuck::karate:

Thanks for the heads up on the traffic issue. I’ll call up Ernest and I know he’ll like this challenge. :hcf: :2p: - :r: :mp: - :dp: :2p: !

I’m a gift to this bewildered state. I’m comin & so is my boy Nate. they’re ours. Thank the lord I’m here. I’m a prodigy. (talkin myself up cuz I am capable of many things.)
It’s time to suprise ya’ll. & samson don’t know about these secrets.
:karate:

Alright, if Joey’s bro brings enough guys with him (say two or three), let’s get a Utah vs Portland team match going during the intermission between SC2 and 3S.

3rd Strike. Just how it should be.

Team Utah 3S:
DarkCatalyst
manji187/Dubz
Nate (I’ll trust your judgment, Ernie. He’ll be there, right?)
Samson (if he’s there on time and it’s 4-on-4)
Black Chance (if 5-on-5 or Samson’s not there for 4-on-4)

Team Portland/School of Bob:
Joey Geurts (He’s Utah now but he’s gotta rep his hometown, I respect that.)
Mike Geurts
Whoever Mike brings down from POR

We can’t go in thinking this’ll be a run-through, though. These particular Portland guys apparently have a history of beasting RayBlade on 3S. As an indicator of where we stand, Joey and I played a pretty even set yesterday (16-15 in my favor), and Mike’s most likely the group’s top player (as far as I know).

I’d kinda like to start the series, but I’ll step down a spot if Ernie wants to try and get his kumite on. If I didn’t offer him at least that much, I’d never hear the end of it. :karate: Get 'em, Ern.

One more thing. Let’s talk about our pre-Evo battles. Yes, that’s plural. :karate:

This is something we’ve gotta throw down to get our crew juiced for Evo. Now, I’m taking the next two weekends (6/9 and 6/16) off because of driver’s ed. >_< I’ll hopefully be completely done with that before the battles. I plan on having two pre-Evo battles here in Cache Valley, as well as one more regular tournament (besides this weekend’s) before Evolution. FUNatics and LFU are the sites. Both would be all-day events, Fun Unlimited’s would feature more games because they have two TVs.

I’m thinking…
LFU (7/30): Super Turbo, Capcom vs SNK 2 (up to you, Seth…if not, another 3S), VF4 Evolution, SoulCalibur II, Tekken 5 (and 3S or A3 if we have time)
FUNatics (8/6): 3rd Strike, Alpha 3, Tekken Tag, Tekken 5 (and SC2 if we have time)

I’ve got Tekken 5 on both because it’d be a nice way to pull players in for the other games. Other than that, how do the lineups sound?

Also, the regular tournament would be 7/23 at FUNatics. Probably with an earlier start than last weekend’s and with one more game. Once I get some good feedback on it, I’ll call Travis and make it official. 3rd Strike/Super Turbo/Tekken 5 sound good to you guys?

I just talked with Nate, he’s down with Sat. This challenge’s gonna be awesome. Round robin right?
I’m assuming you’re gonna use Makoto?
Ernest= Most likely ken
Nate= Oro
Me= Dudley
Black Chance= Don’t know!
I like our line up
As for the line up, how about considering GG reloaded? I really like GG, but I’m not very good at it, and I would like to start, and the new slash might blow up hopefully.
Man, I should really try hitting up more 3D games, 99% of my experiance is 2D so I wouldn’t stand a chance right now, but of course with competition to play with I’ll be more than glad to start training up on it now.
Man I can’t wait for this weekend!

I was thinking elimination, but if we have time (or uneven teams for that matter), we’ll definitely go for the round robin.

I’m not sure if I’d commit to a character, but if that’s how we ran things, here’s what I could tell you for sure (based also on your post).

Me: Makoto or Ken (game time decision)
Ernie: Ken (yeah, I believe it, his Ken rocks)
Nate: Oro
You: Dudley
Tony: Chunli

Joey: Alex
Mike: Hugo

Talk to Tony and I about 3D fighters. We’d love to get some VF4E going in Utah and if you’re down with it, we’ll show you the ropes. We’re also SoulCalibur guys (Tony more so than I) and just about anyone in the state or their dog could teach you Tekken. Tekken is what Utah has done best since about Tekken Tag. Maybe even 3.

The problem with Guilty Gear is that it’s an Xbox game, and we have to provide our own equipment (anything we use at LFU just happens to be there at the time of the event)…and dislike carrying Xboxes all over Logan for that matter. Neither Tony or I drive yet, so we like to travel as light as possible. Trust me, I’d like to get some Guilty Gear going on as much as you would, we just don’t have a way to make it happen logistically yet.

SC2 in da house

I hate to wheeze on this thread here, just to sponge up some players, but what can I say? I’m a bad person.

I just want to let you guys know that there will indeed be an event on 7/16. Pat/DarkCatalyst told me he’s gonna be hella beasted down IRL with classes and stuff, and I’m impatient, so I’m running a thing.

Over at Funatics, at 3:00 on that particular Saturday, I’ll be hosting an SC2 tournament, followed by a VF4E tournament ( :wow: ). If there’s time, I’ll run a T5 tournament afterwards, just for grins.

I might not have a damn bit of skill in 2D fighters (Pat won’t say anything, but beleive me, I suck) but I can hold my own when it comes to 3D. So I guess this is sort of my treat to… uh… myself. Or something. Anyway.

Same kinda rules as before. Double elimination, blah blah blah, BRING YOUR OWN SHIT! I’m running it all on a PS2, so PS2 type controls are a must. I’ll be bringing a couple extra DualShock2s, so if anyone needs to rent, I’m charging $3 per tournament you need it. I’m a bad person.

Just to reiterate cleanly and sweetly:

7/16
Funatics 140 S. Main Logan, UT 84321
3:00 p.m.
$5 Per tourney
Double Elimination
BRING YOUR OWN CONTROLLER!
SC2, followed by VF4E.

Just in case anyone gets hairbrained ideas, Heihachi, Charade, and Necrid are banned. Cuz they suck.

Hope to see ya there.

P.S. If the turnout goes larger than I anticipate (meaning more than 20) then I will not be playing, so I can focus on running the tournament.

Shit, Tony, we’ve gotta get our VF on sometime before that tournament you’re holding. We haven’t thrown any of that down in a long time. How does Wednesday or Thursday night sound (either next Wednesday/Thursday or the ones before the tournament)?

Also, don’t worry about a large turnout. If it goes larger than you’re expecting, hit my cell and I’ll be down to at least help you run brackets (if not participate). Now, my drivers ed itself comes to an end around the morning of the 13th, so I’ll probably (hopefully) be feeling pretty good on the 16th. I’ll list myself as “probable” for now.

Sure, VF4 sounds like a fun to throw down. I need to get back on my game with Shun and Pai before that tourney. Let’s plan on some casual play on… I dunno… Wednesday the 6th? I’ll be busy Thursday, however. :-/

Hey, do you know if Joey plays VF4 or not? It’d be nice to get him in on the rotation. Also, we should throw down some SC2 while we’re at it. I’ve been keeping up on my skillz, but it’d be nice to see your Xiang in action (unless you went to Assassin?)

Don’t worry about helping with the tourney, although thanks for the offer. This is something I have to do on my own, even if it means not playing myself. It would be hella worth it, to see 20 people on some random Saturday playing SC2, anyway. I’d feel like Michael Jackson in a day care center.
