I said that before I even started playing with Seth in Ultra, now I think he’s still pretty good. You’re right, here Poongko is beating one of the best Yun player in Japan. I don’t know about his placement in the tier list, but he does a lot more damage, he’s one of the least affected by DWU and a lot of other characters got worse. Who knows, he may be high tier in this version.

Ibuki, Cammy, Seth (and Yun players before the EXRFC info) acting like they have 0 options after someone does a DWU. Seth’s DP was derpy. Maybe he will be top 15. The other 3 will be top 10 imo. The only Vortex character I haven’t seen too much of is Akuma. I saw one wreck a bunch of people on stream, but it was clear his skill level was much higher than theirs.
A lot of people are talking about the netcode in here, shut the hell up you lady boys.

Yes, with all the nerfs he seems like a mid tier pick ATM now. But seeing how the rest of the game plays out, he might end of high so I agree. He still is a character with alot of tools that other characters don’t have.
His mix-ups are still very scary. People are real bent out of shape with the nerfs tho. Some call him bottom 5.
From what I’ve played, the matchups that have changed for Gief imo are the following:
Gen, feels easier, being able to play footsies and get in on him with no meter definetly changed the dynamics of the matchup, he’s hurt by DWU more than Gief, too. Need to play it more though.
Dudley and Guy definetly aren’t as bad as they were in 2012, Dudley can play footsies now and getting AA’d by him hurts with that knockdown on standing or forward HP. Guy is slippery as hell and if he gets the lifelead he’s tough as hell to pin down, his st.HK buff doesn’t seem like a death button like Sagat or Hawk’s st.HK’s though.
Chun-Li feels better, for some reason, being able to play footsies with her with no meter makes her st.HK slightly less threatening since it’s easier to counterpoke than some of the other death buttons and EX GH > Red Focus severely limits her approach, if you have the lifelead and super stocked Chun will have a lot of trouble opening you up. Pining her down isn’t that hard since EX SBK is still pretty shit, even with DWU.
Sagat doesn’t feel as bad as in 2012, High Tiger Shot nerf definetly makes it slightly easier to get in good ranges, st.MK helps as a poke in mid range and catching tiger shots with the new LP GH isn’t hard from full screen to gain a ton of space, and again, EX GH Red Focus feels like a life saver. It’s still counterpick bad, but it feels more playable than in 2012.
Ken probably doesn’t lose to Gief anymore, his walkspeed buff along with the SPD nerf makes spacing his stepkick easier and he can now bully Gief with it, the damage increase on Hadokens and the faster sweep are definetly game changers, faster sweep can be punished with lp gh on block in most ranges and hadokens get thrown out the window if Gief gets super though, Ken’s U2 is really good in this matchup now, punishes Lariats and is good as a reversal when I’m doing my ambigious crap, since the timing to beat it is different than the timing to beat DP’s. Feels even.
Ryu is the same and Gief is now able to play footsies with him with no meter, along with Red Focus and st.MK buffs (that button already did well in the matchup). DP FADC nerf affects him a ton here too. I may be terribly wrong in a few months, but it feels as if Gief beats Ryu.
Rufus feels pretty much the same but different, they both got buffs that directly affect the matchup in Rufus’s far MP and EX Messiah buffs and Gief’s LP GH buff. They both feel much more dynamic but the matchup number is probably still the same.
Juri is probably worse than Sagat here, DWU makes getting in on her a mess with that backdash and EX Pinwheel since the option that beats both (EX GH) will need to be done with pretty much perfect timing, and if you mess up or get blocked, you just wasted 40% of your life at least. Far standing MP makes her be slightly more threatening in the mid range if she doesn’t have a fuhajin stored, it feels like a mess.
Rose I need to play the matchup more, but it feels like she beats Gief now. Early impression though.
Guile, Sim, Gouken, Yun and Blanka feel pretty much the same, Blanka now gets punished for more blanka balls though, I may need to play it more. It could end up being like the Rufus matchup though, better tools but same outcome.
Out of the new characters, Gief probably beats Decapre (serious 7-3 vibes coming, tbh) and Hugo, loses to Rolento and Poison and goes even with Elena, these are early as fuck numbers though.
IMO, Decapre has trouble with grapplers since most of her options out of scramble are unsafe. Her main option in these matchups seems to be going for cr.mk - lp hands pressure since she can’t be SPDed on block using that string.
Just tested this in the lab. It is punishable with LP SPD. Not even karaing it. I tried it at the max distance. Still punishable. LP hands leaves here too close.
EDIT
Seems MP SPD also works just as easily.
HP SPD does work but needs to be kara’d.
Nope. Your post seems spot on for most of it. Especially Ken. I haven’t tried Decapre but I’m assuming she would from what I’ve seen. I’ll be testing it out too if I get to play tomorrow. I know a lot of Gief mains, and she is on my list of characters I might pick up.
Blanka shouldn’t use his balls tbh. He can keep out Gief, kinda like Bison using his cr.mp, St. mp, St.hp and cr. HP.
Ive been having a bit of trouble vs Gief as Rose. Mainly because I’m not used to that new whiff lp greenhand>command throw gimmick. I’ve just been throwing him on reaction after that lp greenhand recently and it seems to be working out but it took me quite a few matches to get that reaction to it.
I’ve recently found that you can get some great fireball traps going vs gief when you start using st.hp (that long scarf) as an anti air. Also I think Ultra 1 may be good vs Gief. Orbs is great also so double ultra might be the go to in that match.
Are you doing it from max range cr.mk distance? Because we already know that raw hands is unsafe. What we’re specifically talking about is cr.mk~lp. hands which our own testing has shown to be safe from SPDs and DPs.
