USF4 | Tier List Thread (updated October 2015)

Smug leveled up, Sanford didn’t. Simple as that. You can complain all day about the matchup, but unless you find a way to adapt then you’re just gonna be stuck. At least you’ll have an excuse for losing I guess

Sometimes things are just bad, people have a hard time accepting things because they use their own (usually online) experience.

I think I hate when folk say " that would make them too strong" like dealing with yun , viper or ibuki is a walk in the park.

Well now that you mentioned yun, I’m prepared for a compromise lol

Characters in SF4 aren’t really strong enough to always overcome matchups because of the defensive tools and weak offense in this game.

Sometimes the plan is just “i hope they mess up” when you get to the extreme edges of the matchup chart.

source: playing a character with 2-8 and 8-2 matchups for 5 years

Your math is off bro that’d be 730 posts. =)

It’s fine to acknowledge him as an amazing player lol, and I know definitely do. As with many of the top players he’s extraordinarily talented and hard working, and I wasn’t sharing my opinion as to whether he’s a scientific player or not. I was clarifying HNIC Mike’s opinion.

Also no one is saying that I’m not a big deal that he wrote a book nor am I hating. It’s just the most fucking benign reason to dig up as to why the player is good, and I feel like next you’re going to tell me about his gym membership with that level of fandom. Let’s ignore the most obvious reason as to why the player is amazing and let’s highlight the fact the he can write a book about himself, instead of seeing him play (or playing him yourself) which shows you how much practice and thought he puts into the game. =|

I can’t wait to see your reaction when you see this.

Lastly looking at a post count is a terrible metric to use for judging someone’s engagement with a particular game, especially on a forum with multiple games. For all you know I could be from the Arksys community. =)

Not “simple as that” lmao. Sanford was just recently at Northwest Majors where he beat PR Balrog, Ricky O, Hoodaman etc. he’s really fucking good. Its just a horrible matchup, Smug beat Ryan Hart a couple times as well you gonna tell me that Smug leveled up and Ryan Hart didn’t?

Bypass fireballs for free and walk Sagat to the corner and bully him. What’s he gonna do? DP FADC? -5. EX knee? Stuffed by tons of normals. Use his normals to keep Dudley out? CH into 300+ DMG.

At least Ryu and Guile have some walkspeed and a couple buttons that Dudley has problems with in the midrange Sagat has nothing

Do you wear a shit eating grin or a serious face when you tell a Dhalsim player to adapt to Hakan/Makoto?

Maybe if 1+1=1…

You have a little over 1400 posts. You joined 2 years ago. 2*365=730. 1400/730 = ~2 posts per day.

I will say the links you are posting are cracking me up. Funny shit! Shooting Stars had me seriously laughing. The comments are too good.

But Daigo isn’t Lebron since he’s been dominating fighting games longer than lebron has been dominating basketball. He’s Jordan and Lebron :).

i am no where near a great player but i know that my character is hard to win with. it os too easy for most characters to get around my zoning, and if i score a hard knock down now there is no benefit to me.

if i play solid but make a mistake it will cost me the round. if i get down in life i dont have comeback firepower

if i could ask for one thing it would be tomake cr. mk into fireball a true blockstring. at least i would have safe pressure and an opportunity to deal solid damage after confirming. you can take back all the other “buffs” just give me that and ill be happy

IMO Ryu should have got

His cr.MK hurtbox properties from Super or least the hurtbox decreased be a little bit
SPS damage increased to 110 (SPS > HP SRK would do the same damage as SSFIV, SPS > cr.HP > HP SRK would do less damage than SSFIV)
cr.MK > fireball true blockstring at every range (chip damage increased to 18) the recovery on his cr.MK would need to be increased though.
cr.HP total frame count unchanged but two additional frames of hit stun added

The question is why does Ryu have to be high tier or better than the other shotos? It wouldn’t hurt to see more diversity among the shotos, there are 5 different shotos in the game that are all unique yet everyone picks Ryu. No one complained when Ken was mid tier in vanilla, no one said shit when Oni and Evil Ryu were considered weak, maybe Ryu is worse in this version, so what?

Ahem

5 years and 127 pages later. There are still complaints that he’s midtier at best. Even during arcade edition the posters didn’t think he was anything but midtier… and even mentioned in AE these characters were better:

Yun, Yang, Fei Long, Cammy, Akuma, C.Viper, Zangief, Seth, Makoto, Ibuki

Ken players complaining, in here most people don’t even play with Ryu, but it’s a consensus that Ryu should be high tier or the best shoto, for what reason?

I think I’d rather see his F+HP made 16F startup and 17F recovery and maybe move forward a little bit faster/farther so it’s more like his ST version. Maybe change it from 22 to 13 so he gets 2 hits less often but he can use it from farther out and space it to be +2F on block / +6F on hit by only getting 1 hit.

crMK - fireball being a true block string at every range would require his crMK to have a TON of frame advantage. AE2012 Ryu if you do a crMK -> LP Fireball at absolutely max range vs a crouching Ken the fireball will be +2F on block. That means that the fireball was active for 8F before it hit. Ryu’s crMK only has 15F blockstun in USF4, you’d need to make his crMK something like +3F or +4F on block via increasing the blockstun by 5-6F for it to be a true block string from every range with a LP Fireball. Hell, even if you made it only enough to be a true block string when using HP Fireball, that same scenario I described? (Max range crMK vs a crouching Ken) results in the HP Hadoken being 0F on block. That’s STILL active for 6F before it hits.

Why does any character have to be better than another? They don’t, but that’s not the point, and it’s also a horrible way to look at fighting games.

Ryu being bad is generally a bad idea, not because he is the main character or what have you, but because he is the epitome of an “honest” character and is pretty much pure fundamentals.

Also, the fact that Ryu is worse will NEVER stop the majority of players using him, simply because he is the posterboy and is very easy to use up until the higher levels of intermediate play.

Damn I thought you said one post a day. GG no RE on math…

But those reviews are fucking amazing, especially C.Cahoons “Average at best…” and “Hopefully the movie is better…”. xD

I feel the lack of “hard” offense is what makes 6-4 and 7-3 matches in this game seem worse than other SF’s (3s or ST) 8-2’s. In 3s or ST once you got momentum and started running your shit on the opponent you could outright win, even if your matchup was 8-2. In SF4 even when you do get momentum and start running your shit it’s just “meh”. Plus it’s hard to maintain momentum in this game because of the vast array of defensive options and there isn’t much that is particularly good.

Ironically, (maybe not) Capcom’s fear of making anything in this game too good has amounted to defense being too good. So they did make something too good after all.

Oh I added to my post that his cr.MK should have recovery added if they desperately want this because a cr.MK that’s +2 on hit and -1 on block would be absurd. No character should ever have that because they would turn into some broken monster </s>

Deejay is pure fundamentals, same goes for Honda, they’ve been bad since the beginning, those characters need more love from Capcom.

sorry my brain must have put “ryu is weak” in the interview or in one of your posts because the tone of both was sad face ryu. that whole bit about ryu has been treated unfairly amongst the shotos-from daigo, in combination with all your QQ about ryu and ultra in general read as “ryu is weak” to me.

straw man. guilty i guess

believe what you want about daigo. he’s steve hawking or whatever. sure. all i know is he talks an awful lot about feeling and expression, and it bleeds heavily into the way he plays as well. if you feel that thats somehow different from the way he analyzes the strength of a character, or that playing and practicing a lot automatically makes you into a scientific person, then OK

as far as evidence of how ryu is not weak, i could go into detail about it, but ive said enough about the subject. i dont care that much. if strong shoto tool set is not enough for you then IDK
