all those frame traps…god only knows how the dudley community survives
Hey guys I’m going to try and get the trade lariat vs Dudley’s neutral jumping HK brb
gets stuffed
Why are we talking about online play in a tier list discussion? This game isn’t meant to be played online unless you live in Japan or some shit.
And of course Dudley is the only character in the game who relies heavily on frame traps and whiff punishing.
Everyone thinks their character is hurt more by online and all characters with fast/weird moves are way better.
When I’ve talked about this with Blanka in the past and how projectile matchups get much harder because slide on reaction becomes unreliable I’m told Blanka is godtier online cause unsafe things that I don’t do are harder to punish
Online play is just “grain of salt tier” at best
Keep forgetting this is the internet, unintentionally ruin a semantic and all the neckbeards get butt hurt. *one of the most affected by laggy settings. Hope that soothed the uptight asshole that is your collective personality
And if you can’t think for yourself, ill spoon feed it to you. The reason online play is relevant to this conversation is because a good deal of us (tournament players or not) play online, it’s a largely contributing factor to our perception of characters and their movesets like it or not

Online play will never be relevant for tier lists. Ever.

People always talk shit to me about playing Gief online because I can churn butter all day long.
Dealing with laggy fireballs and trying to EX GH through them is an exercise on patience on a whole new level, they do forget to mention that though.
Sometimes I wonder if I’d be better offline than online since I never go to weeklies or events (only Capcom cup for location test). My play style is very meticulous. On one hand, Cody can thrive online if he gets in (probably why people think he is so strong up close is because throws are untechable online and counterhit setups work even better when there is input delay lol.) On the other hand he can also be super easy to lame out and everyone mashes reversals online which Cody hates due to mobility lol.
I tend to do a lot of walk forward - block - walk forward - block. Poke. Anti air with normals. Y’know, play footsies. On the other hand, my OS game and setups are super simple. Despite all of the tech I find, all of the setups I search for, 90% of the time I totally forget to use em and just play by feel lol. Only safe jumps I consistently remember to use are his LK Ruffian wait a few frames NJ HP, back throw - FJ HK and the only unblockables I ever remember to use are EX Ruffian - dash - dash FJ MK in the corner and EX Ruffian - backdash - far LP - FJ MK mid screen. Half the time I forget to OS unless it’s viper (Since EX CU OS beats almost everything) or they backdash my first setup (then I OS LK Ruffian usually)
My playstyle is so simple, I really should step it up lol -_-
Only Capcom cup. Are you Norcal?
San Jose, drove an hour to get to CC (got super sick on the way, had to go to the ER get some meds because I threw up 4x on the way for some reason I just recently started getting sick on longer car trips. No idea why, never used to.) still went. Waited an hour to play 1 match (let my mom play my other match of the 2 out of 3 since she is just starting to get into FGs at age 54 (mostly thanks to EVO2013, esp PR Balrog vs Infiltration got her hyped) and I wanted her to have some fun, I had to push her in a wheel chair though due to her medical problems she can’t walk or stand for more than like 10-15minutes at a time. Major back / neck / hip problems (bone death in hip, extra ribs in neck, really REALLY bad back problems all over), schooled some capcom rep on why / how specific mechanics work he didn’t know, couldn’t find Combofiend anywhere (probably busy). (Even my mom commented to the Capcom Rep “Cody is so slow, can you make him faster?” without me mentioning it to her at all just from her watching me (she plays Ryu) Gave feedback to rep, and filled out form, mom bought herself a Hello Kitty Ryu and left.
First event I’ve gone to. One thing I gotta say is: the buttons on the default madcatz sticks they were using at the event suuuuuuuuuck. Same ones I had in my TvC stick I had to replace the buttons after only 4 months because one of them started sticking and another one would either register twice or not at all when pressed. Got 8 legit sanwa buttons and they still work amazing almost 2 1/2 years later. Plus they respond so much better, they pop back faster they feel better (the madcatz ones feel almost “squishy” I guess? Hard to describe.)
My play style is very meticulous
Pretty much the worst style to play online although I am quite similar because I try to replicate offline online and prefer to play “proper” if such a thing exists. Online you are seriously better off using reactions and going super ham, it’s by far the most effective style. Most people shit themselves and do something silly, especially against those average players. If you just jump around like a tit but with you’re better reads/execution they are all like “shit , my random scrubbiness is getting out scrubbied”
Every character has problems online, although I’ve always believed characters with fast walk speed have a slight advantage when it comes to throws and traps. Playing Vega/Bison etc online is vastly different from off.
Chars with fast walk speeds having advantage for throws / frame traps applies to both online and offline. Having a fast walk speed can easily make up for having a shorter throw range (Cammy) and having a fast walk speed lets you trap longer and safer as you can weave in and out of throw range easier, stay in longer and get out if you expect a reversal, and get back in to punish said reversal easier. It’s why it’s so frustrating that they didn’t give Cody a faster backwards walk speed (which is what he needed more than forwards but forwards helps for sure in a number of MUs)
I find that characters with extremely safe / effective special moves are the most annoying online. Probably because they gain meter just doing the move, and do chip, and typically the specials do solid damage. Unless you are one of Guile’s bad MUs his sonicboom is incredibly annoying online. Viper’s thunder knuckles and burn kicks. Dudley’s LP MGB. Makoto’s EX Hayate and axe kick (I abuse those alot). Yun’s shoulder and EX Lunge. ect ect. Any time a move is both safe on block and relatively difficult to beat or whiff punish it’s hard to fight online. I can certainly deal with Chun’s Hozanshu offline if I setup a dummy to do them just randomly and move around or just fight CPU Chun who does it a lot. However online that shit is spammed to death and damn near impossible to react to other than blocking it for me.
Wait you’re from San Jose and YOU NEVER WENT TO A LOCAL SESSION/TOURNAMENT!? A lot of the strongest Norcal players are in that area!!! I go to school there and I go to events whenever I can (Alpha Clash , Versus at Milpitas Golfland, FGTV once). Come on, I don’t have a car and I still manage to go.
There are good players with simple playstyles like John Choi. Plays very ST like. Simple doesn’t mean bad. There are also some Cody players that can help . I know Harrison personally and I heard BJ unchained is returning to Norcal soon. Well at least you have 2 more very good Cody players near you. Unlike me I am usually the only Ibuki player in 90% of the local tournaments I go to T____T. Though sometimes I see Mattypie.
I don’t really have interest in being a pot monster and I don’t have my own car (I actually don’t drive even though I’m 28 =3=). If I even went to a weekly I’d just play free casuals. I got my fill of hyper competitive play when I was a sponsored Quake 3 player.
I didn’t say you have to compete. Tournaments offer casuals (just pay venue fee) as long as there are setups provided, otherwise you have to wait until the tournament is almost over but that doesn’t take too long. I think you’ll enjoy offline a lot more than online. Even a big online warrior like Revolver SaGod told me he enjoys offline more now as he goes to more sessions. I feel like you’re wasting opportunities if you don’t go. Many people that don’t have a scene would do anything to have a strong scene.
Make friends, ask for rides, offer gas money, the FGC will be happy to be your chauffeur. It’s true!
I think people are sleeping on Gouken in general a bit. I see people still placing him bottom 10.
In AE he was definitely not a great character, but his changes addressed 90% of his problems. He has combos from lights, a real reversal, a very good whiff punish with s.lk, etc. His biggest problem now is that he’s super big now, but between parry for Ibuki-like shenanigans, delayed wake-up and a whiff punish that doesn’t require him to crouch, it isn’t as big a problem anymore.
gouken is really good now, he has everything he needs, and does monstrous damage in a game where damage conversion is very important
I agree with Moontiger
Do it eternal
Honestly, I spend 95% of my time in training mode experimenting. That is where I get my most fun. I barely play online at all ~.~
