Lol @ his sagat doesn’t impress you…second best or third best Sagat in the world if you consider Gachi-kun.
He’s definitely on a level much above Ryan Hart and he also has much better competition than Ryan Hart. It seems to me that he plays the Rose matchup better than Bonchan does, even if Bonchan is a slightly better Sagat.
There’s a set from back in August of Santarou facing Kawaguuchi, Japan’s highest-ranked Rose (though not the best). Kawaguuchi got demolished, losing 2-10.
During the Topanga B-League matches back in October, Santarou had a much closer FT3 set against Ninomae, Japan’s 3rd-ranked Rose (and best) that ended 3-1.
He doesn’t impress me compared to Bonchan. Luffy is a different Rose than Ninomae or Kawaguuchi, but he was better than those two even before Ultra, imo. Like the Santarou and Ryan Hart comparison it’s just a matter of taste, outside international results or YouTube videos we don’t have many info’s about that specific MU. Maybe Gat and Rose players can help us.
Keep in mind that Ninomae has the better win rate (79% to 75%) and is in Topanga B-league while Kawaguchi isn’t. At the end of the day though, it’s tough to say who’s better without lots of gameplay against the same opponents to compare. Match videos of Kawaguchi are scarce. Only gameplay I ever see of him comes from offline events, even though he does have an XBL account.
I think Bonchan is the superior Sagat, but Santarou knows the MU better. Bonchan’s reactive-defensive style doesn’t pay off against Rose. Aggressive play’s the way for Sagat to go in this matchup.
Just watch the videos of Santarou I posted above. He’s far more consistent with his punishes (cr.LK xx TU against whiffed slides, TU against cr.MP xx Spiral/Spark blockstrings), doesn’t feed Rose meter, takes advantage of st.MK, contests spacing more often, and in general plays more aggressively than Bonchan.
I should clarify that I think Luffy will take it (he’s the best Rose in the world and this MU is still awful for Sagat), but I don’t think it’s going to be as easy as some people say it will be.
10-5 Luffy IMO, it’s just so bad for Sagat. It’s like saying you think Snake Eyes (or Hagejin/Cantona) can win a ft10 against Bonchan because they know the matchup. It may not be as free as the MU scores would indicate, but you’re still fighting a losing battle.
There’s a video of Kawaguuchi getting a 30(?) win streak on some top japanese players, Shin* Juri and some Sagat I forget. He also got second place at SBO for his team and won some clutch matches, specifically against Gamerbee in the semifinal.
Louffy was definitely not on the level of Kawaguuchi before Ultra…wasn’t even close honestly. Louffy was just “the best Rose in Europe” or “outside Japan”. I haven’t seen as much of Kawaguuchi in Ultra, which is why I think it is possible that Ninomae surpassed him. Looking at Ninomae’s gameplay for example, there are a number of things he does (fadc combos, traps, setups) that are nowhere to be seen in Louffy’s gameplay. Louffy’s Rose is too simple in comparison.
Why do you try so much to minimize luffy’s accomplishments?, it is unsettling honstly. luffy was not only dominating europe before ultra, he was also top 16 at evo, he has defeated ryan, daigo, justin ricky, mago, tokido and more when rose was barely top 30. What has accomplshed your japan roses, show me a video of them defeating a top japanese before or after ultra. Seriously when i see how suprised most japanese stars were when they fought luffy in the west I can even say that those roses are nobody to them, just good arcade players.
Ninomae was beaten 10-2 by santarou, who loses to bonchan. Nobody here thinks luffy can be beaten that much by a sagat player. Stop hating.
Really, there’s nothing to say if the current EVO champion seems come out from nowhere or a scrub compared to a good arcade player. And plz, leave the EU-USA feud to Eventhubs.
