I don’t even feel like I’m qualified to give my own opinion about that, but what the hell, why not. I think he can be just as successful as his Ryu. The same solid and methodical style with more damage potential means he won’t drop off IMO. Over time I think he will decide to throw in some mix ups and go for tatsu > sweep and come up with ways to pressure opponents whether they use DWU or not. And in the long term I think he will be more successful then he has been in AE 2012.
And yeah I know I said a lot of “I think” with one “IMO” in there lol.
I think in hindsight , daigo just made poor decisions, character selection for one ( it amazes me that pros don’t use hard counters if they have them) and his approach on choi, no point picking Evil Ryu if you don’t utilize his strengths, when you play fundamentals against a fundamentally sound player you play inside their comfort zone.
im not amazed at all. Japanese players are for the most part are character specialist. Diago IS just like that once he decided to play e.ryu he wont use any other character. It would amaze me if diago in fact would played those said hard counters.
The only time i remember diago going to specific picks was against o.gat in ST back in the day tho.
Character specialists that swap to the strongest character you mean, Daigo’s just had as many swaps as American players (probably more when you think about it - he’s had as many as 4 main characters through SF4). Just because they stick with one character in a tourney doesn’t make them hero’s, if anything it makes them slightly stupid.
You might get respect but your not taking the edge available. Momochi and Sako are proof that swapping is very effective.
IDK about you guys, but I think that Daigo can do well with E.Ryu by just playing the conservative, fundamentals only style. The thing about E.Ryu is that you pretty much can be successful playing him as Ryu with combos, which is exactly why I think Daigo decided to main him in the first place.
In the future, I would like to see him develop his use of E.Ryu’s unique tools like hopkick and divekick, and focus on a more aggressive style of how he already likes to play.
It didn’t surprise me one bit that he got eliminated so early though, as I knew for a fact that he wasn’t getting top 8 if he used E.Ryu the whole time. Say what you want, but you’re going to have a hard time getting any good results using a character that you’ve only practiced for 2 months, because E.Ryu and Ryu are different enough characters to be out of your comfort zone while switching.
About the no counterpick thing, yeah it is pretty stupid tbh. On one hand it’s cool because it shows you have confidence in your character and the skills you have with it, but at the same time why would you risk losing in the biggest tournament of the year because you have too much pride? I’ll be honest, I even counterpick ONLINE if a certain player is pushing my shit in, and I know I’m only winning if I use a different character.
Sako is guilty of the same mindset a little. He was in some close sets with Elena where he could’ve easily won with Evil Ryu or Ibuki.
Don’t know what Daigo was thinking either. I thought he would beat F champ pretty easily since the match-up is the same as Ryu but you get waay more damage when you get in.
He literally lost to cr mk & didn’t try anything to counter it. I know that’s a hard button to deal with for Evil Ryu but try a st mk a F+mk, whiff punish with a sweep or something. He literally walked into for 4 rounds.
think about it like this. lets say choi and daigo are on the same level
if daigo isnt going to use his dive kick, hop kick, red fireball, teleport, or create many opportunities to land eryu combos, he is basically playing the same character as choi with 50 less health and slower buttons
Choi landed a couple of damaging solar plexus to focus attacks that really changed the flow of the important points. If I’m critical of Evil players its that they sometimes try and abuse his focus to land large combos and it lands them in hot water instead of using his meter cancels.
Daigo was pretty much already mentally a bit broken after losing to Fchamp and just realized that his E.ryu isnt even 50% as strong as his Ryu, add to that pride and shonen spirit ( no counter pick ) + choi godlike footsies , there you go , eliminated … also his E.ryu dosnt look like is trained on the console, its seems like he only trained at the arcade
