USF4 Sagat

ditto on the ultra 2 sentiment (and is it just me or was ultra 2 also better in AE even though it didnt juggle full hits?). I really don’t think it’s overreacting when stating the facts. Gat doesnt have the crossups and mixup shenannigans of other characters. his primary weapons were his zoning and his damage. You had to play solid and patient and punish your opponents mistakes.

In his current iteration, the effectiveness of his primary tools have been significantly reduced (along with his comeback ability). That is just fact…so while we can still play gat the same way we did in the past, it doesnt mean you would get results.

DWU is only a temporary solution, vortex is coming back as soon as people get used to the game. I’m still playing sagat, however, it is sad that you play solid and patiently and still get beat out due to being a huge neutered target that poses no threat.

lol, and to think we were kinda salty at AE Sagat…compared to this one, that dude was a BEAST.

I don’t think its an overreaction, its more a disappointment. Nobody asked to be top tier, most Gat players just wanted a couple of holes filled in to make him compete in his bad matches. They just replaced the holes with other holes. I mean who here would have though they’d be playing a Sagat with less damage and a worse fireball game? We would have all laughed, like - “ha ha, as if they would do that”. Yet here we are.

I think he’s still a decent character but people are way over estimating the DWU impact.

I know this guy that said that a few days ago. Ha, but yep you’re right.

What’s Rolento got that Sagat can’t deal with? Blocked Rolento slide? cr.lp > TU or TK punish on block. Standing HP (2 hit)? Don’t focus, treat it like a Adon match, too many breakers. U2 loaded? Don’t fireball or TU FADC, free U2 punish for Rolento. Wanna jump on Rolento? Not a bad idea, his anti air doesn’t have much active frames. EX Rollout on his wakeup? Try this, meaty Cr.LK >OS For. Stepkick. Rolento will end up behind Sagat and you can cr.lp > TU on his recovery. Air to Air, Rolento always wins. Pogo-Mixup? F*ck…

This is how I like to play this MU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qri-qB8JIA

Haven’t fought enough good Elenas to tell for sure, but High TS was probably nerfed an extra 3 frames specifically for this matchup. Elena jump so damn high that without the High TS nerf, it’d prob be too hard for her to jump in on Sagat.

I don’t know about you guys but I’m running into **a lot **more timeouts in USF4 with Sagat than any other iteration. Got a health lead? Great, keep it and play like an annoying safe bastard ST style.

maybe I’m just playing too many scrubby online rolentos, but I get a knockdown and they can’t deal with the pressure.

Just don’t let them get started with the pogo mixups, those do hella damage if they combo into stick rekkas.

be careful with rolento with ultra 1 and a bar, anything that combos into ex baton twirl juggles into ultra.

Hey guys, new to this forum…

I am just wondering what you guys are doing now, if you are sticking through with Sagat or will you start with a new char?
Asking this since I am quite new to the Street Fighter franchise and also fairly new to Sagat, have 1000-ish matches online so far.
Just wonder if there is any point to keep on going or if I should be thinking about maining someone else.

That is why I am asking you guys that has more experience with both game and character

I’ve not found any of the new characters that bad, I did play a turtle style Decapre the other day which did seem tricky because she try’s to sit full screen and just react to fireballs, her damage is enough to take a decent life lead and she can take space back with her Yoga Catastrophe Ultra. I think she’ll be the toughest in the long run because she can turtle you out. There’s basically nothing you can do about the daggers either so it’s free pressure.

She’d be my candidate for best new character (against Sagat).

I would stick with him. He will be buffed next patch in August, mark my words on that.

If they don’t buff him, you should consider Gouken, he’s a far better zoner in this version than Sagat.

You’re right. He was high-mid tier in AE2012 and he can still be played exactly the same. Let’s see where this is going :

  • Buffed : 2-hits st.lk becomes cancellable (useless), tk 1st hit forces stand (easier spacing).
  • Fix : U1 in the corner
  • System changes : unblockables are still there, RFC has no efficient use with Sagat (hk tk RFC is a waste of meter), DWU is just another parameter in the vortex that will be accounted for by vortex chars.
  • Nerfed : damage on heavy hitting tools (f.hk/ultras ranges/ultras dmg), FB game, TU FADC on block. These were his strong points.

So, up or down ? Any char with his tools can never be non-viable, so of course he remains playable.

I’m switching mains though, and I’ll carefully observe performance of historical Sagat tournament players at Dreamhack and EVO.

Sagat sucks now.
Straight up.

Anyone played a good Guile player? Seriously it will make you cry salt, you’ll start dreaming of AE2012 and the “good times”.

You basically have to sit there while he controls everything and just pick off his mistakes. It’s that bad.

What is the most glaring difference in the guile match High? (besides the TS recovery that is).

Just that, but before the match was really about keeping Guile out of the war and forcing him into mistakes, now he can keep up with you that little bit better he’s just all round controlling things better. If he risks a jump in he get’s paid off because of the shot recovery but it’s not the same the other way round.

The match has always been like this but now it’s just worse. At least with Gouken you can rush him but Guiles a bit tougher in that regard.

Gotcha…and i hear ya about rushing Guile with those normals is…not ideal.

Well Sanford beat Dieminion last NLBC in the Sagat-Guile matchup so its nothing unwinnable.

It’s not that it’s unwinnable, it’s far from that. It’s just that it feels wrong that Sagat’s zoning gets worse when thats what he’s supposed to be good at. Guile got some nerfs himself, the health nerf helps a little with the flow since a life lead is important. I know Guile players don’t seem to be all that happy about his changes either.

People were shitting themselves about Gat and Guile being too strong so it looks like Crapcom just went and shuffled the deck but didn’t actually make them any better. Never understood this mentality myself, I’d rather pick my way through a zoner that get randomly fucking Burn kicked or full screen lunged punched to death.

yo can anyone confirm if chun-li’s super can punish gat’s high tiger shot from say…cr hp range??..here’s my 5 cent’s i think gat def got the short straw wen it comes to him being balanced
his bad match up’s are definitley still bad match ups his even match ups force us well force me to play way more smarter az far az spacing and throwing ts from a safe distant’s is concerned.i believe this was capcom’s plan from the beginning,to force us sagat players to out smart our oponent’s…in saying that i definitley feel sagat has potential to be toptier not cause of his tools but because we out smart our opponent’s.not saying that sum ov us were’nt doing that already just now we hav no choice lol.

NZMaoriboy, wish i had your optimism about capcom’s intentions.

On another topic…is there a point to High TS now?

Yeah learn how to set up ur high TS to catch people trying to jump when there guessing ur gonna throw a low. There’s ranges where the TS high or low are unsafe to use but sometime to fast to react. If ur getting jumped on check ur spacing. I find that 9/10 times people were guessing a jump. Now in ultra I’ve prolly net 240-360 in damage from just anti airing. Everyone knows the TS got nerfed. It’s our job to check them for jumping. Nothing against anyone in the forums but I hear people complain & complain about the TS but it seems like they don’t even know how to throw a fireball. And I ain’t tryna hear what if they don’t jump cause they will. They have no other choice. If they focus tiger knee. If they block keep throwing fireballs. When they jump TU. it is really that easy. And nzmaoriboy I agree with you I find myself thinking a lot more with sagat in this version then the last. It feels like ryu almost where you gotta work for the W.

Maybe the scrubs your playing son. It’s easy to get past Sagats zoning with almost any character, through the use of focus, blocking and good walk speeds you can position yourself into Sagat’s bad zone quite easily. Playing Sagat isn’t about mastering how to keep people out, it’s knowing precisely which buttons to press at which distance when they do get there. It’s also about blocking - a lot of blocking.

St.lk/st.mk/lows buffered into fireballs, low step kick, focus dash and throws, these are the tools you need to use if you want to level up your Sagat. Frame traps with cr.mp and cr.fierce, Tiger knee blockstrings and hit confirming into bigger damge with 2 bars, that’s the stuff you should be working on.

I watch Sagat players that have been playing him for 2 or 3 years and they still can’t do shit but throw shots and anti air people while throwing out random Tiger Knees…
