USF4 Sagat

[quote=“Highlandfireball, post:60, topic:169311”]

With a character with decent walk speed, you can literally just walk up to Sagat within their Tiger Knee distance then watch Sagats jump back into the corner to try to reset the distance or worse, try to jump at you.

I get a laugh at this all the time.

There’s really no need to risk jumping on Sagat anymore because there’s so many ways around fireballs. Most characters have an EX-Move or Ultra that blows up any thrown fireballs mid-screen so that’s why laming it out is so important in this version with Sagat. I’m gonna try to not even use EX-TS, EX TK or EX TU. I personally think Sagat’s meter is completely dependant on TU> FADC > Ultra now. It’s the only way to put them back into a good position and get some real dmg (albeit too damn low imo)

Good example here, (Dictator does great against Sagat with no jumping in AT ALL except safejumps after throws, then loses the match because of 2 jump ins - resulting in TU >FADC > Ultra.

Hard to really lame it out with no walkspeed or great buttons but you can only try.

PS: just watching this is ragequit inducing. Match starts, Mago immediately walks forward and puts Bonchan into corner. Immediately counter-hit Bonchan’s kara TK attemps with st.lk > Tatsu lol. Mago even counter-hits Bonchan’s Low-TS attemp while in the corner with same st.lk >Tatsu. To pile it on, Mago even counter-pokes Sagat’s pathetic mid-screen footsies attempts… Match up is over and Bonchan skuttlefishes back to his seat with head down… RAAAAAGGGEEE!

Highland ur right all those things come into play when playing him at his highest level. I just gave him 3 basic things to look for that can help his game. U can be here all day explaining everything u need to be thinking bout when playing as Sagat. Also no one said the character is easy. He’s just like ryu when it comes to playing him you have to master everything. And ur right only like 4 or 5 people ever in sf4 history people played him at his highest level. But I bet any money if anyone focused on those 3 things I said & got those down there game would greatly improve. Then move on to other things to like learning how to use his buttons etc. everyone damn near has a negative attitude in this forum cause of some changes. Ofcourse there’s gonna be matchup that are tough etc etc but that’s the game y’all are acting like its all most impossible to win now. Instead of complaining nd shooting down anyone who has a different mindset we should all be labbing it up to find new streagies to solve these new problems in the game. Thats what i thought these forums were for to identify the problems for our character and help solve them. This forum is starting to look like eventhubs with all the complaining and negativity. No one said the road to being the king is easy.

As far as what you mentioned regarding anti airing and throwing fireballs to initiate a jump in, i’d say that’s one of the core elements of sagat’s play, so no news there.

My question regarding high ts is that since its recovery is identical to low ts, it’s utility is almost nil now. Only reason to use it would probably be up close to stop a jump attempt early, and even then its quite risky.

i find that im relying less on zoning and im just looking for that hard knockdown and rushdown pressure. Not ideal, but yeah…will take getting used to.

Sagat is still good but you have to be godly to make him amazing.

You have to work hard and put in serious work, you have to play Sagat completely different than before but still the same, hard to explain.

He has so much character specific shit now it’s unbelievable.

Get in the lab and learn the new punishes.

You can do 376 damage on Rufus on a jump in with a one frame link combo, no meter.

You can end bnb with cr. Mp into hk tk on fei and akuma.

Etc

The high tiger shot nerf becomes glaringly annoying when you play this matchup now.

Anyone have the list of characters that Sagat gets combos off counter hit overhead?

I know it works on Akuma

What’s the combo on Akuma with a counter hit overhead please

On Makoto I was able to land cl.cr hp,jab,DP I don’t kno if that was in ae but it’s good when she dashes forward

hey yo, fuck this character. Fuck this game. everyone else gets derpy brainless stuff, and the least gimmicky/autopilot/press x for jason i mean win becomes ineffective at all ranges.

sagat in ultra = get walked into the corner.

I’m hella frustrated. there’s no way to open people up, or get at the right range without super risky raw reads. the reward for shots just isn’t worth the risk (40 or so damage to risk a full jump in combo).

guess its time to slug through getting good with cammy.

seriously, FUCK ultra sagat.

Overhead>jab>whatever.

Only works in the corner I believe but you can go into ex fireball and then ultra.

Goodbye lol

On Rufus you can counter hit two cr. Mp into hk tk

The best way I’ve found to combat his tougher matches is to just drop the shot zoning all together and use your spacing knowledge with his strong normals. Characters like Dudley/Adon/Cammy etc can REACT to a shot, so you have to ask yourself the question is my shot gamble worth the damage the other way? The answer is unequivocally - No. You are trying to keep these characters out for no reason, better that they either make a mistake on a shot read or you go toe to toe. The same goes for characters with EX moves that beat zoning. Play smart.

You can fight these characters up close with good patience and good normal selection. It’s hard but possible and if you’re the better player it’s winnable. Personally I have no problem knowing what I can and can’t do in these tough matches.

The only match I would single out as being a little too much is Juri, you have to make a lot of risky reads against her especially if she takes a lead.

Sagat over all can be played similar but he’s not a strong character, he has too many problems. If they just gave us the damn st.lk one hit cancel it would be a whole different story. With T-hawk and the likes getting massive buffs on their forward moving specials and the shots getting weaker, there’s no reason at all not to put this buff back in.

From memory I think the overhead in the corner works on Abel and Dhalsim, no counter hit needed, have to be right on top of them though, the old set up was forward throw neutral jump dash in - overhead xxx

Pretty specific. Not sure that one works on Akuma though, I don’t think so, not without CH.

So cr.lk x2>mp>heavy tiger knee bnb works on:

Oni
Akuma
Makoto
Juri
Chun Li
Honda
Ibuki
Gouken
C viper
Bison
Blanka
Rufus
Rose
Fei Long
T Hawk

Oni, Akuma, Gouken, Ibuki, and Bison it doesn’t work when they’re standing. And on a bunch of characters when they’re standing you don’t get the full damage because you only get one hit of knee.

Vega is weird the bnb works on him sometimes and then sometimes it doesn’t, must be super strict spacing or something not worth it.

This bnb does 228 dmg which is pretty good for Sagat.

Also I’m pretty sure counter hit cr. Mp x2> heavy knee works on all of the above.

I agree I’ve been using normals every match even more. I still use my fireballs but I bait a lot with fake step kick, the bonchan fake out (duck like I’m buffering a DP) stand jab also. I still try to use the fireball to more so bug the player because I need that anti air damage. I played a ken played who didn’t jump the whole match. I had to get creative to get some damage

Yo ^^
For me the prob isnt the TS cause Sagat is really safe for many MU :
Ryu : 2mp , close mk , 2mp ts , back dash , TS free … Ryu cant jump if Sagat do ts low block, kara hk ts hk twice but with TS hp…
Chunli , cody , dictator …cant jump full screen with TS low light …
The prob its the nerf of u1 not the dmg . u1 are very short , Why capcom touch the travel of Tiger destruction and the knowk down ???

  • u1 not complète full screen : TU back dash u1 vs ryu ken … 388 loool 328 ae in corner ( a joke bro )
  • after U1 all set up dead know , cause u1 get out to longer ! Ex: with sakura , claw… can empty jump ex tk cross up!

Tkx capcom you kill many set up and strategies

Hey guys, I picked up Sagat and I have a few questions about him in Ultra…

  1. What is the best TU to AA with?
  2. I see a lot of players doing TU FADC straight into ultra without doing the f+hk. Is there a reason? I try to do the kick every time for that little bit of extra damage but maybe I’m missing something
  3. When is it a good idea to use high TS? I know it has 5 less frames so is it when you’re anticipating a jump or something?
  4. When is it a good idea to kara fireballs?
  1. They each have the same amount of invincibility so use whichever is best range wise.

  2. F+HK is hard to land on some characters.

  3. It is faster so use it to throw off opponents.

  4. After a knock down or in a fireball war when your opponent ducks or jumps a fireball.
